Vibration problem due to railway loading

Train is one of transportation mode is increasingly polular in Indonesia nowdays, although in developed countries this transportation has long been a very advanced mode of mass transportation. Problems due to railroad tracks adjacent to densely populated settlements cannot be avoided. Problems such as noise levels can interfere with the health and comfort of the environment, vibrations in the surrounding environment due to passing trains cause some damage to civilian buildings such as residents' houses and high rise buildings as well. This field study shows the potential problem due to mass train loading (Babaranjang) in Bandar Lampung.

Cooking oil fumes (COFs) comprised of a mixture of cancer-causing volatile organic aldehydes (VOAs), particularly trans, trans-2,4-decadienal (t,t-DDE), 4-hydroxy-hexenal (4-HHE), and 4-hydroxy-nonenal (4-HNE). Monitoring toxic VOAs levels in people exposed to different cooking conditions is vital to predicting the cancer risk. For this purpose, we developed a fast tissue extraction (FaTEx) technique combined with UHPLC-MS/MS to monitor three toxic VOAs in mice lung tissue samples. FaTEx pre-treatment protocol was developed by combining two syringes for extraction and clean-up process. The various procedural steps affecting the FaTEx sample pre-treatment process were optimized to enhance the target VOAs’ extraction efficiency from the sample matrix. Under the optimal experimental conditions, results exhibit good correlation coefficient values > 0.99, detection limits were between 0.5–3 ng/g, quantification limits were between 1–10 ng/g, and the matrix effect was © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Spreading marine dead zones (or hypoxia) are threatening coastal ecosystems and affecting billions of people's livelihoods globally. However, the lack of field observations makes it challenging to estimate dead zones with spatial precision and across large scales. While satellites offer great potential for detecting environmental changes through large-scale and temporal consistent data, they have yet to be fully integrated into the spatio-temporal dynamic mapping of hypoxia. To address this limitation, we integrated satellite imagery with field observations in random forest models on the Google Earth Engine platform to characterize dead zone dynamics from 2000 to 2019. We applied the workflow to the Gulf of Mexico, which has the largest dead zones in North America. Our model explained 64 % (± 5 %) of the variance in predicting dead zones using satellite data. The analysis revealed that dead zones in the Gulf peaked in 2009 (17,699 ± 679 km2) and contracted afterward in terms of both size and persistence (% days with hypoxia). Despite this contraction, the average size between 2010 and 2019 was twice that of the coastal reduction goal (2) set by the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force. Furthermore, dead zones occurred more frequently in the western Gulf, and nearly half of the western region experienced dead zones annually. In addition to inter-annual changes, our analysis highlighted the intra-annual dynamics of this phenomenon. Notably, dead zones expanded in June, peaking in size from mid-August to early September. The high temporal and spatial resolution of this dataset allows policymakers to develop targeted management plans and environmental policies. Our approach, which incorporates remote sensing for long-term monitoring of coastal dead zones, can be applied to worldwide monitoring initiatives when paired with local field observations. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Catalytic conversion of sugars and biomass to furanic biofuel precursors by boron-doped biochar in ionic liquid

In this study, the production of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from sugars e.g. xylose and glucose, and agricultural wastes e.g. corncob, rice straw and wheat straw were examined in the presence of boron-doped biochar catalysts, boric acid and an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([emim]Cl). Boron-doped trapa shell biochar (BTB) and coconut shell biochar (BCB) catalysts were synthesized via the wet impregnation method. Fourier transform infrared spectra of biochar catalysts showed a band for B[sbnd]O stretching vibrations confirming successful boron impregnation. Furfural and HMF yields from glucose reached 32% and 40%, respectively. One-pot hydrolysis-dehydration conversion of corncob, rice straw and wheat straw resulted in yields of up to 12% and 21% for furfural and HMF, respectively. In addition, catalyst reusability up to 4 cycles was demonstrated with less than 5% variation in HMF yield. Overall, the results of the study offer new insights and great potential in the conversion of waste biomass to high value platform chemicals for energy applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

The synthesis of natural polysaccharides from durian seed gum-modified chitosan as complex nanoparticles was successfully developed. The complex formation of nanoparticles was confirmed by 1H NMR, indicating the interpenetrating polymer network between the durian seed gum and chitosan. The material's physical properties were analyzed using ZETA potential, SEM, FTIR, swelling assay, and spectrofluorometer. The material showed a pH-responsive behavior as evidenced by the swelling assay, in which the complex nanoparticle has a smaller swelling index in pH 5.5 and 7.4 than pH 2.1. The stability of the material was tested by checking the hydrodynamic diameter, which resulted in the modification of chitosan having higher kinetic stability than the durian seed gum under a diameter smaller than 1 μm. The chitosan-modified durian seed gum's hemolytic activity indicates blood compatibility with 4 % hemolytic activity under high nanoparticle concentration (400 μg/mL). More importantly, the cytotoxicity test of complex nanoparticles showed biocompatibility with NIH/3 T3 cells, whereas complex nanoparticles exhibited high toxicity towards HeLa cells. Moreover, complex nanoparticles showed strong intracellular blue fluorescence with selective activity towards cancer cells. Hence, this newly developed green synthesis of polyelectrolyte nanoparticles derived from durian seed gum modified with chitosan improved selectivity and intracellular fluorescence in tracking cancer cells. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

In the development of sustainable lithium-ion batteries, achieving the efficient and cost-effective recycling of all components, particularly spent graphite (SG) anodes, has become a critical requirement. While considerable efforts have been devoted to recovering and reusing SG materials under conventional conditions, limited attention has been given to recycling under extreme conditions. This review systematically elucidates the main failure mechanisms of graphite anodes, including lithium plating and dendrite formation, solid electrolyte interface film failure, structural degradation, and current collector corrosion, with a particular focus on low-temperature and fast-charging conditions. As a contribution toward optimizing resource utilization, this review comprehensively summarizes the industrial perspective on strategies for recycling SG anodes, which aim to produce high-purity regenerated graphite (RG) powders. We also analyze current methods for modifying RG, such as structural reconstruction and surface reconditioning, to bring added value to modified RG materials. A detailed examination of the technical challenges in SG recycling and RG upgrading is presented, offering guidance for the future development of graphite upcycling technologies. This review also provides valuable insights into achieving high efficiency, intelligence, and sustainability in graphite utilization. © 2025 The Authors

Nickel oxide (NiO)-based supercapacitor electrodes have attracted great attention due to the ultra-high theoretical specific capacitance. NiO, as a typical pseudocapacitive, is considered to be the most promising candidate as an electrode material for supercapacitors. Herein, the NiO nanostructures directly grown on the Ni foam have been successfully designed and synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The optimal Ni foam/NiO electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 93.2 C/g at a current density of 5 mV/s. The enhanced electrochemical performance of Ni foam/NiO electrodes is due to the unique morphological architecture which facilitates open access and promotes electrolyte ion/electron transport.

Baseline waste management data in North Lombok District

An integrated waste management system requires baseline data, including waste generation analysis, composition density, and waste characteristics. Baseline data is needed to determine the proper waste management strategy. This research was conducted by measuring directly from the source of waste carried out by stratified sampling following SNI 19-3964-1994. The location of the study was carried out in Tanjung and Gangga districts because this location is considered to represent North Lombok Regency. The research was conducted using 100 samples of household waste. The study results on the composition of waste in the North Lombok Regency consisted of organic waste, plastic waste, paper, cloth, wood, glass, metal, and rubber waste. The dominant composition is organic waste. The characteristics of waste in the North Lombok Regency have a higher water content than the water content of waste in general. All the characteristics tested indicate that the waste in North Lombok Regency requires several treatments before processing waste, such as reducing the water content and increasing the C/N ratio. Based on the characteristics and composition of the waste, composting or incineration is the suitable waste management method in North Lombok Regency.

Southeast (SE) Asia is a highly biodiverse region, yet it is also estimated to cumulatively contribute a third of the total global marine plastic pollution. This threat is known to have adverse impacts on marine megafauna, however, understanding of its impacts has recently been highlighted as a priority for research in the region. To address this knowledge gap, a structured literature review was conducted for species of cartilaginous fishes, marine mammals, marine reptiles, and seabirds present in SE Asia, collating cases on a global scale to allow for comparison, coupled with a regional expert elicitation to gather additional published and grey literature cases which would have been omitted during the structured literature review. Of the 380 marine megafauna species present in SE Asia, but also studied elsewhere, we found that 9.1 % and 4.5 % of all publications documenting plastic entanglement (n = 55) and ingestion (n = 291) were conducted in SE Asian countries. At the species level, published cases of entanglement from SE Asian countries were available for 10 % or less of species within each taxonomic group. Additionally, published ingestion cases were available primarily for marine mammals and were lacking entirely for seabirds in the region. The regional expert elicitation led to entanglement and ingestion cases from SE Asian countries being documented in 10 and 15 additional species respectively, highlighting the utility of a broader approach to data synthesis. While the scale of the plastic pollution in SE Asia is of particular concern for marine ecosystems, knowledge of its interactions and impacts on marine megafauna lags behind other areas of the world, even after the inclusion of a regional expert elicitation. Additional funding to help collate baseline data are critically needed to inform policy and solutions towards limiting the interactions of marine megafauna and plastic pollution in SE Asia. © 2023 The Authors

Although much has been learned about the fibrillization kinetics, structure and toxicity of amyloid proteins, the properties of amyloid fibrils beyond the saturation phase are often perceived as chemically and biologically inert, despite evidence suggesting otherwise. To fill this knowledge gap, we examined the physical and biological characteristics of human islet amyloid polypeptide(IAPP) fibrils that were aged up to two months. Not only did aging decrease the toxicity of IAPP fibrils, but the fibrils also sequestered fresh IAPP and suppressed their toxicity in an embryonic zebrafish model. The mechanical properties of IAPP fibrils in different aging stages were probed by atomic force microscopy and sonication, which displayed comparable stiffness but age-dependent fragmentation, followed by self-assembly of such fragments into the largest lamellar amyloid structures reported to date. The dynamic structural and toxicity profiles of amyloid fibrils and plaques suggest that they play active, long-term roles in cell degeneration and may be a therapeutic target for amyloid diseases.
