In the last decades, biomonitoring has been notably tested using organisms sensitive to the presence of pollutants. To identify pollutants in the urban atmosphere, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of the species Oeceoclades maculata (Lindley) Lindley as a bioindicator of metals present in atmospheric air at different regions of the city of Volta Redonda (Rio de Janeiro – Brazil). For this, 31 orchid samples were distributed throughout the city, divided into seven sectors (North, Center-North, East, West, Southwest, Center-South, and South). Leaf samples were collected at 6 and 12 months of age. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Ni were analyzed via cluster analysis (CA), exploratory, and descriptive statistics. For Pb, Ni, and Cd metals, the results were below the Quantification Limit and therefore were discarded from the analysis. The CA defined two homogeneous groups (G1 and G2) of metals in Volta Redonda (RJ). The main highlight was the Fe element, which at 12 months increased the concentration by about 5 times when compared to the 6 months old plant. In the collection at 12 months, dry season, the highest concentrations of Zn, Fe, and Mn occurred in the Center-South sector, near the urban area close to the industrial activities of the municipality. At 6 months of age the plant – and during the rainy season - Zn and Fe showed the highest average concentrations in the Southwest sector of the city, being associated with both industrial activities and heavy vehicle traffic. Concentrations of Mn and Cu revealed higher values in the Center-North and North sectors of the municipality, again due to industrial activities and vehicle traffic. The use of the species O. maculata has proved to be effective for biomonitoring the accumulation of metals in atmospheric air, presenting an efficient assessment of environmental quality in urban ecosystems and complement information based on air quality stations. © 2023, The Authors. Inorganic material applied for membrane technology such as silica is well employed for water desalination nowadays. Silica membrane is favorable to use to offer high selectivity and robust materials. However, it also has a debility due to unstable matrices when contact to water. Nypa fruticans leaf was fundamentally containing carbon which is potential as templating agent to enhanced the hydro-stability. The objective of this work is to investigate performance of nypa-silica membrane for desalination of seawater. Nypa-silica membrane prepared by mixing silica sol and carbon from nypa (0.1, 0.5 and 2.5 %) for 90 min at cold temperature. Then membrane support was immersed into nypa-silica sol by dipcoater and calcined at 350 and 450°C under inert atmosphere condition via rapid thermal processing (RTP) technique. Silica-nypa membranes were tested by seawater desalination (3.5 wt% NaCl) by pervaporation. Carbon from nypa gave a good impact to silica base membrane performance depends on template loading. Increasing concentration of nypa may reduce water flux of permeate. The result of membrane in this work rather low water flux. However, all of membranes show great salt rejection >99.9%. Interestingly, the permeate salt concentration of all silica-nypa membranes performed less than 600 ppm of limited total dissolved salt on drinking water according to standards given by the World Health Organization (WHO).

A modification of silica structure is urgently needed to improve silica-based matrices applied for water desalination. It is due to the hydrophilic properties owned by pure silica structures, and it is also caused by the silica pore was collapse during ions water exposed on membrane surfaces. According to that, this study is aimed to fabricate and to observe the innovation of silica membranes modified matrices by mixing the main precursor of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as sources of silicate as well as carbon applied for water desalination. The mixtures of MTES:TEOS (10:90) was mixed with acid-base catalysts using sol gel method. This process and reaction were held for 3 h nonstop. The modified organo-silica sols were dried by oven for 24 h and grinded into powder that called xerogel. Then it was calcined using furnace for 1 h at 350 and 450 °C using RTP (rapid thermal processing) method which under variation of condition (vacuum and air/atmosphere). Functionalization of modified organo-silica membranes were investigated using FTIR spectra and Fityk software. The results show the modified organo-silica derived from MTES (as a carbon source) exhibited the functionalization of siloxane (Si-O-Si), silanol (Si-OH), and silica-carbon (Si-C) functional groups. The optimum organo-silica MTES:TEOS mixture was obtained from sample calcined at 450 °C under vacuum calcination. The presence of carbon bonds causes the pores formed tend to be small but strong so it is suitable for application in the desalination process.

Cinnamoylquinic acids constitute a class of polyphenolic compounds with a quinic acid core and with diverse quinic acid esterification result in distinctive beneficial biological effects. Naturally present in many foods, these compounds exhibit properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Transcriptomic analysis was performed on human amniotic epithelial stem cells (hAESCs) treated with ten cinnamoylquinic acid derivatives. These multipotent stem cells, previously recognized as a physiologically relevant model for studying the bioactivities of natural compounds, revealed distinct transcriptomic differences associated with eight of the structural variations. The structure-functionality relationship was distinguished through cell specific tissue, functional enrichment, and developmental stem cell marker genes analysis. Structural characteristics were explored to assess the druggability potential of the derivative. Certain moieties showed pronounced effects, notably methyl tetraferuloylquinate, with four ferulic acid side substitutions and one carboxymethyl group. Overall, while structure-activity analyses identified key molecular components driving bioactivity suggesting optimal compound modifications. The utilization of big data with statistical analysis underscores the therapeutic and preventative medicine potential of Cinnamoylquinic acids.

Ecological Footprint Model of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport from the Perspective of the Local Community

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is prone to various environmental problems. The problem of population growth has an impact on increasing economic activity which directly impacts the environment. In every production activity from the environmental side, it will bring up the carrying capacity of the environment and the carrying capacity of the environment or ecological footprint. The problem will be difficult if it turns out that the ecological footprint that occurs exceeds the capacity of the existing environmental carrying capacity, also for airport problems. This will result in the airport being unsustainable. This article will discuss the model of the airport environmental footprint that is currently occurring at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport by utilizing the opinions of respondents who live and have activities around the airport. The factor analysis method is used to process the respondent's data to obtain the factors that influence the environmental footprint and then through these findings a model can be developed which is expected to be able to abstract the current conditions. The research results show that the dominant environmental footprint at Soekarno-Hatta airport is overload airport activities impact, operational slot time optimization, and renewable of airport energy, which can then be built as an instrument to evaluate, build and develop airport control policies that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

In an oil drilling area, there are two oil drilling companies that have obtained permits to drill. As time goes by, the availability of existing petroleum decreases. To anticipate natural resources the government only prioritizes one company. Competition occurs between the two of them to explore petroleum from the ground so that they can drill. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview, how to make a system dynamics model related to the problem of oil drilling as an increasingly limited natural resource, by taking the case of the relationship between drilling companies in facing business competition. The method used is system dynamics with a standard model of mutual difficulties (drifting goals). The result obtained is a system dynamics model that can be used to demonstrate the behavior of a simulated petroleum drilling model to get an overview or condition of the limitations of petroleum and future availability.

The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted Latin America, the continent with the highest number of cases and Covid-related deaths. Strict confinement conditions at the beginning of the pandemic put to a halt recycling activities and augmented the consumption of plastic as a barrier to stop the spread of the virus. In Latin America the lack of data to understand the waste management dynamics difficult the adjustment of waste management strategies to cope with the Covid-19. As a novel contribution to the waste management data gap for Latin America, this study uses a virtual and participatory methodology that collects and generates information on household solid waste generation and composition. We present the results obtained between June and November 2021 in six countries in the Latin America region, with a total of 503 participants. Participants indicated that the pandemic motivated them to initiate or increase waste reduction (41%), waste separation (40%) and waste recovery (33%) activities. 43% of participants perceived and increase on their total volume of waste;however, the quantitative data showed a decrease on household waste generation in Peru (-31%), Honduras (-25%) and Venezuela (-82%). No changes in waste composition were observed. Despite the limited sample size, this data provides a much-needed approximation of household waste generation and composition in a pandemic situation during 2021. © 2022, The Authors. Among a set of tools to emerge in recent years in environmental management, one appears to meet the criteria necessary to bridge this gap is the environmental footprint analysis based on biophysical reality of sustainable living, people must use natural renewable products and services not sooner than they are replacedand produces no waste faster than nature can absorb. The purpose of this study is to develop a model of noise environment footprint toward sustainability airport with the environmental assessment at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The results showed that the airport ecological footprint of the model can be built through the factors analysis that can give an idea of the influence of ecoairport. The conclusion of this study is to obtain the noise ecological footprint provides a method for the total impact of air transport to be assessed, the ecological footprint can be used as a communication and awareness tool to inform communities about the impact they make. It can lead to shifts to public transport for airport access, ecological footprint can be used by airports and airlines to identify operations where energy efficiency measures can be made and where resource consumption can be reduced

Perception Analysis of Airport Noise on Environment, Sosial, and Economic at Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport

The increase in aircraft noise is an inevitable impact of Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP) commercial operations since 2014. The perception of noise risk from people living around airports is a factor that must be considered for formulating strategic, comprehensive airport noise control plans and policies, and participatory. The purpose of this study is to analyze the noise conditions and the perception of environmental noise risk to the perception of socioeconomic risks that live around the HLP Airport. The results of the WECPNL calculation in area of Jaticempaka and Makasar was ranged between 73.80—79.72. The environmental noise risk of the community in HLP Airport's vicinity was studied from knowledge aspects, perception aspects, and behavior aspects. Most of respondent were in the moderate category of environmental noise risk knowledge and environmental noise risk perception. While for environmental noise risk behavior aspects most respondent were in the low category. The social and economic risk perception for most respondent were in the moderate category. The conclusion of this research is that the community settlements in HLP Airport's vicinity at the distance of 300 m and 600 m does not meet the environmental noise standard for a residential area which is regulated at 55 dB(A). The ideal area for settlement use in the vicinity of HLP Airport is Makassar area which is located 600 m from HLP Airport's runway.
