LHAASO J2108+5157 is a recently discovered source, detected in the Ultra-High-Energy band by the LHAASO collaboration. Two molecular clouds were identified in the direction coincident with LHAASO J2108+5157 and, from the spectra reported by LHAASO, there is no sign of an energy cutoff up to 200 TeV. This source makes a promising galactic PeVatron candidate. In 2021, the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory, collected about 50 hours of quality-selected data on LHAASO J2108+5157. Through these observations, we managed to compute stringent upper limits on the source emission in the multi-TeV band. Together with the analysis of XMM-Newton data and 12 years of Fermi-LAT data, we performed a multi-wavelength study of the source, investigating different possible scenarios of particle acceleration. In this contribution, we will present the results of the analysis, as well as the multi-wavelength modeling, and consequent interpretation of different possible scenarios of emission. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

We present a new approach to the pointing determination of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). This method is universal and can be applied to any IACT with minor modifications. It uses the trajectories of the stars in the field of view of the IACT’s main camera and requires neither dedicated auxiliary hardware nor a specific data taking mode. The method consists of two parts: firstly, we reconstruct individual star positions as a function of time, taking into account the point spread function of the telescope;secondly, we perform a simultaneous fit of all reconstructed star trajectories using the orthogonal distance regression method. The method does not assume any particular star trajectories, does not require a long integration time, and can be applied to any IACT observation mode. The performance of the method is assessed with commissioning data of the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), showing the method’s stability and remarkable pointing performance of the LST-1 telescope. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Plastic pollution is a widespread issue that poses a threat to agroecosystems. Recent data on microplastic (MP) pollution from compost and its application to soil have highlighted the potential impact of micropollutants that may be transferred from compost. Thus, we aim with this review to elucidate the distribution-occurrence, characterization, fate/transport, and potential risk of MPs from organic compost to gain comprehensive knowledge and mitigate the adverse impacts of compost application. The concentration of MPs in compost was up to thousands of items/kg. Among micropollutants, fibers, fragments, and films are the most common, with small MPs having a higher potential to absorb other pollutants and cause harm to organisms. Various synthetic polymers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester (PES), and acrylic polymers (AP), have been widely used of plastic items. MPs are emerging pollutants that can have diverse effects on soil ecosystems, as they can transfer potential pollutants from MPs to compost and then to the soil. Following the microbial degradation scheme, the transfer chain from plastics to compost to soil can be broken down into main stages, i.e., colonization - (bio)fragmentation - assimilation - and mineralization. Microorganisms and adding biochar play an essential role during composting, which can be an effective solution to enhance MP degradation. Findings have shown that stimulating free radical generation could promote the biodegradation efficacy of MPs and possibly remove their occurrence in compost, thereby reducing their contribution to ecosystem pollution. Furthermore, future recommendations were discussed to reduce ecosystem risks and health challenges.

Novae are luminous explosions in close binaries which host a white dwarf and a companion donor star. They are triggered by a thermonuclear runaway when the white dwarf accretes a critical amount of matter from the secondary. Though novae are established as high-energy gamma-ray emitters through observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), the origin of the gamma-ray emission, whether it is hadronic or leptonic, had been under intense debate until very recently. RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a well-known recurrent symbiotic nova with a recurrence time scale of 15 years. The most recent outburst of RS Oph in 2021 brought the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from a nova ever. The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array observed this historic event along with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. The LST-1 observations in the first days after the burst onset show a clear VHE gamma-ray signal from RS Oph. The low energy threshold of LST-1 allows us to reconstruct the RS Oph gamma-ray spectrum down to ∼30 GeV, providing the best connection of the VHE gamma-ray data to the Fermi LAT energy range. The results from the analysis of the LST-1 observations are consistent with those obtained with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC, and also support a hadronic origin for the observed gamma-ray fluxes. Changing climatic conditions affect surface water quality in southwestern Louisiana in the United States

Climate change impacts on rising temperatures, changes on rainfall patterns, drought, flooding, sea level rise, glacier melts, and incidence of diseases and parasites are reported worldwide in recent decades. This study investigates the effects of changing climatic conditions - particularly air temperature and precipitation, on surface water temperatures and other water quality parameters, such as the conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and turbidity. A statistical analysis was performed on air temperature and precipitation data from 1980 to 2005 to determine the changing climatic conditions. The water quality data for four waterbodies in southwestern Louisiana was also analyzed to examine trends between the air temperature and surface water temperatures, precipitation and surface water temperatures, and precipitation and water quality parameters. There was an unexpected increase in surface water temperature with an increase in precipitation. As the precipitation and air temperature increased, so did the surface water temperature. This increase in surface water temperature was correlated with decrease in DO levels. The increase in precipitation also correlated with an increase in pH and turbidity in Bayou Plaquemine Brule. This study's findings could be utilized in a dynamic climate modeling system to provide more accurate predictions of climate change in southwestern Louisiana. © 2020 Taylor and Francis Inc.. At the inaugural Frontiers in Hydrology Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the summer of 2022, the Hydrology Section organized a poster session and invited our 2020 and 2021 Classes of AGU Fellows, with the initial goal of both celebrating their careers as well as to provide an opportunity for an informal exchange and connection between the section's early career members and our more senior and established scientists and engineers. Due to the challenges of time zones, virtual poster presentations and other logistics, the formal poster session was adjourned but continued as a hybrid “meet-up” with six of our Section's Fellows (Suzanne Anderson, Paul Brooks, Aaron Packman, Remko Uijlenhoet, Andrew Western, and Xubin Zeng) from around the world. As you will see, what started as an informal chat quickly took deep dives into pressing issues in our section and science in general, including thoughts on how our community values (or in some cases doesn't value) multi- and interdisciplinary accomplishments, critiques of our system of rewards and awards including how we assess publication impacts and finally, a frank and honest discussion of our current efforts to diversify our community and where/why are we still failing. We hope that by sharing this open and impromptu dialogue that these discussions can expand to our entire community, and to encourage future Fellows exchanges such as this to reach our entire community of scientists and engineers. How we value our scientific contributions and impacts needs to expand beyond the traditional metrics of counting publications, grants, etc., that we have used in the past While interdisciplinary science, broad scientific thinking and societally relevant science are often stated as important to success in hydrology, these contributions are less recognized in the awards processes than individual accomplishments or narrowly focused scientific contributions How we do our science and how we evaluate it have significantly evolved over th

Pretreatment during biogas production aims to assist in degradation of lignin contained in the rice husk. In this study, pretreatment which is used are acid and biological pretreatment. Acid pretreatment was performed using acetic acid and nitric acid with a variety levels of 3% and 5%. While biological pretreatment as a control variable. Acid pretreatment was conducted by soaking the rice straw for 24 hours with acid variation. The study was conducted using Solid State Anaerobic Digestion (SS-AD) with 21% TS. Biogas production was measured using water displacement method every two days for 60 days at room temperature conditions. The results showed that acid pretreatment gave an effect on the production of biogas yield. The yield of the biogas produced by pretreatment of acetic acid of 5% and 3% was 43.28 and 45.86 ml/***. While the results without pretreatment biogas yield was 29.51 ml/***. The results yield biogas produced by pretreatment using nitric acid of 5% and 3% was 12.14 ml/*** and 21.85 ml/***. Results biogas yield with acetic acid pretreatment was better than the biogas yield results with nitric acid pretreatment. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

In this work, we show that non-superabsorbent, thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel particles (< 250 μm) can reduce autogenous shrinkage in cement paste and improve early-age stiffening that can be caused by traditional superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). Swelling measurements in DI water and cement filtrate solution suggest that SAP-induced early-age stiffening is caused by its super-absorbency in low-ionic solutions – a behavior not exhibited by non-superabsorbent PNIPAM. Addition of PNIPAM resulted in a 29% and 60% reduction in autogenous shrinkage strain at 14 days when used alone (0.3 wt% PNIPAM) and in combination with SAP (0.15% PNIPAM, 0.15% SAP), respectively, compared to a Control with no polymer addition. Furthermore, an addition of 0.3 wt.% PNIPAM exhibited a ∼29% and ∼37% decrease in static yield stress compared to a Control and 0.3 wt% SAP-modified cement pastes, respectively. Taken together, the results provide initial evidence to suggest that the use of hydrogels as internal curing agents may not necessarily require super-absorbency to reduce autogenous shrinkage. Non-superabsorbent hydrogels, like PNIPAM, may help reduce autogenous shrinkage while alleviating the effects of SAP-induced early-age stiffening.

Gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining a healthy intestine. Escherichia coli (***) is a commensal bacteria colonizes the mucous membranes of the gut, intestine, and urinary tract. However, these strains incorporate genetic elements to become pathotype and affected in hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Seven pathotypes have been categorized such as Entero-Hemorrhagic *** (EHEC), Entero-Aggregative *** (EAEC), Entero-Pathogenic *** (EPEC), Entero-Toxigenic *** (ETEC), Diffusely Adherent *** (DAEC), Entero-Invasive *** (EIEC) and Adherent-Invasive *** (AIEC), and each pathotype possess distinct virulence mechanism and virulence factors to disrupt the host intestinal epithelial cells that cause diarrhea and other intestinal inflammation. This review highlights the various fimbrial and afimbrial adherence mechanisms of *** pathovars, and how it competes with commensal bacteria in achieving pathogenicity in the host. Such adherence mechanisms are mediated by virulence proteins that have a significant impact on the outcome of intestinal inflammation. © 2020 The Author(s)
