Due to the ready availability of tree leaves in many geographies, the alternative food of leaf concentrate currently has the potential to alleviate hunger in over 800 million people. It is therefore potentially highly impactful to determine the edibility of leaf concentrates, which are in the same regions as the world's most undernourished populations. Unfortunately, the toxicity of leaf concentrate for most common tree leaf types has not been screened and the cost of doing so demands a prioritization. This preliminary study explores this potential solution to world hunger by finding the forest classes most likely to offer proximate access to the world's hungry, thus providing the basis for a prioritized list of leaf types to screen for toxicity. Specifically, this study describes a novel methodology for mapping available green leaf biomass and corresponding forest classes (e.g., tropical moist deciduous forest), and their spatial relationship to the global distribution of people who are underweight. These results will be useful for developing a targeted list of tree species to conduct leaf toxicity analysis on, in the interest of developing leaves as an alternative food source for both current malnutrition problems and global catastrophic scenarios. © 2021 Policy Studies Organization.

In order to reduce Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle plastic waste, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) provided reverse osmosis drinking water in some buildings. Water monitoring is needed to keep the water quality. Therefore, a water monitoring system based on Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, and water flow was proposed. Since the UB buildings have good internet connection (WiFi), Internet of Things (IoT) was employed to the system to support real time monitoring. So, data of TDS, pH, and water flow can be periodically sent to cloud and displayed to a specific website. The system worked very well and the data can be summarized and used by operator as indicators of performance of the reverse osmosis machine. When water quality and performance decrease, operator must check filters membrane or water pump for further maintenance to support long life use. Although the sensors have been calibrated properly, some measurement errors occur. The measurement error percentages of TDS and pH are 0.62% and 0.94%, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

It is undeniable that microplastics are found in many types of water, including drinking water. This study aims to investigate the presence of microplastics in one of the drinking waters widely used by communities in Indonesia, known as unbranded refilled drinking water. The investigation was conducted at eight unbranded refilled drinking water depots in Karawang, West Java. A total of 2.00 L of raw air and processed water samples were taken from each depot, then prepared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, analyzed using an Olympus BX - 41 microscope with a magnification of ten times, and then counted manually. The results showed that raw and processed water in all unbranded refilled drinking water depots contained microplastics with details of 15.50-42.00 particles/L and 6.50-17.50 particles/L, respectively. The dominant microplastics found were fibers and fragments with sizes of 1.00-3.00 mm and less than 1.00 mm. Furthermore, the dominant color of the microplastics was black, indicating that the polymers of microplastics were polyethylene, polypropylene, or polystyrene. This finding has confirmed that refilled drinking water consumed by the community in Indonesia has potentially become one of the main pathways for the entry and accumulation of microplastics into the human body, posing significant health risks. Biogas generated from urban solid waste degradation in landfills is composed of various types of gases, some of them are very toxic and harmful to the health of both humans and animals, and contribute directly to global warming as well. In this way, the monitoring of biogas concentration in landfills and their surroundings is very important because this can assess the air contamination around landfills, as well as to propose means to minimize it. In this work, an electronic nose for gas identification and measurement of gases present in landfill biogas using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is introduced. The ANN training data have been collected by the developed electronic nose, which consisted on a set of low-cost gas sensors and on a signal acquisition system controlled by the LabViewsoftware. After the ANN training, a neural architecture has been obtained and implemented in a microcontrolled digital system to measure different gas concentrations, mainly, methane. The main results of the proposed ANN-based Electronic Nose show that it was possible to measure the gases concentrations, with RMSE less than 1%, for the most of target gases, confirming the accuracy of the developed system.

Over the years, soft growing robots that allow the feeding of new materials at their tips have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique locomotion characteristics. However, accessing targets over highly curved passages by steering compliant continuum bodies remains challenging. To this end, this study proposes a new tip steering mechanism that imparts soft growing robots with consecutive high-curvature steering ability. We place a hyper-redundant rolling contact joint and twisted string actuator (TSA) at the tip of a soft growing robot to provide high-curvature continuous steering with a smaller scale factor, allowing consecutive turns. The proposed small form factor continuous curvature tip steering mechanism allows the steering mechanism to stay at the tip during steering, improving accessibility by enabling consecutive turns. The improved accessibility of the proposed mechanism is demonstrated based on better confined space reachability compared with that of conventional whole-body steering soft growing robots, along with a consecutive high-curvature pipe navigation demonstration.

Air pollution is a major global environmental health threat, in particular for people who live or work near air pollution sources. Areas adjacent to pollution sources often have high ambient pollution concentrations, and those areas are commonly referred to as air pollution hotspots. In this work, we explore the use of mobile sensing data to detect pollution hotspots. We propose a two-step approach to detect hotspots from unevenly sampled mobile sensing data. To contextualize the detected hotspots and discover potential pollution source characteristics, we explore a variety of cross-domain urban data and extract features from them for hotspot inference. Evaluation results using real-world mobile sensing air quality data as well as cross-domain urban data demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in detecting and inferring pollution hotspots. © 2021 Owner/Author.

3D city models are an important cornerstone in the development of digital twin cities, allowing for various analyses and simulations. CityGML, as an open standard for 3D city models, emphasizes five main aspects: scale or level of detail (LoD), semantics, geometry, topology, and appearance. One of the important elements in CityGML 3D city models is representation of vegetation. Vegetation in CityGML, especially individual trees, is still limited in terms of detail and resolution, reducing its effectiveness for specific applications. This paper proposes a graph-based conceptual model for individual trees that conforms to the CityGML v2.0 specification. The model refers to the morphological structure of a tree consisting of roots, trunk, and crown (including branches, twigs, and leaves), and considers the five main aspects of CityGML. By enhancing semantic information and geometric details, the model aims to provide an information-rich and realistic representation of individual trees in a 3D city environment. The 3D tree model created based on this conceptual model may be applicable in the development of digital twin urban forests and virtual forest simulations that utilize immersive technologies such as the metaverse. This research opens up new opportunities in the development of solitary vegetation objects through CityGML ADE by including more detailed semantic and topological information. © Author(s) 2024.
