The studies of bioethanol production are being intensively explored over the past years in the provision of biofuel. This has been long recognized as the best alternative for a renewable energy resource to overcome the problem of the depletion of fossil resources. Indonesia's main agricultural sector, sugarcane industry, has shown promise in supplying sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as a feedstock for the second generation of bioethanol production. In this study, the techno-economic analysis of the sugarcane bagasse from the bioethanol production plant was explored, and the viability of bioethanol production based on the biomass generated from a local sugarcane factory was evaluated. All the costs that will be incurred during a 20-year operating period for a 203 ktons bioethanol production plant from SCB is $231 million, with a payback period of 6.19 years. The potential amount of bioethanol produced from SCB of this plant is 30.19 ML/year with the production cost (levelized cost of bioethanol, LCOB) of $0.59 per liter of ethanol produced. Overall, SCB bioethanol still carries better competitiveness at lower selling price in comparison with the latest price regulation by the Indonesian government ($0.85/L). © 2023, The Authors. The purpose of this study is to know and locate the distribution of open defecation houses in East Surabaya of Surabaya City, Indonesia. Both of secondary and primary data are required for this research, the secondary data consist of the number of OD houses in East Surabaya and basic map of Surabaya City. Primary data consist of field survey OD houses of legal and illegal status. Mapping is conducted with mapping software based on geographical information system. The result of this research proves that there are 1.083 OD houses in East Surabaya and it is equally distributed throughout East Surabaya. The most OD sub-district (Kelurahan) is Gubeng with approximately 319 houses while the least is Kelurahan Tambaksari with 23 houses. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In 2017 summer, we observed a widespread bottom hypoxic zone at the lower estuary of the Pearl River estuary (PRE). We observed i) bacterial and AOA biomass accumulation, ii) oxygen consumption rates (respiration and nitrification) in the hypoxic zone. The potential microbial interaction of both oxygen-consuming microbes in the hypoxia remained unclear. To investigate the potential microbial interaction between AOA and heterotrophic bacteria in the hypoxic zone, we used bacterial and AOA communities (inferred from 16S rRNA gene and amoA gene, respectively) and multi-comparisons between the co-occurrence networks retrieved from DNA and RNA levels to reflect the pattern. We observed a highly diverse and active bacterial community in the hypoxia zone. The network topology revealed that Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes (Flavobacteriales), Alphaproteobacteria (Rhodobacterales and Rhodospirillales), Marinimicrobia, Cyanobacteria (Synechococcales), and AOA sublineages were module hubs and connectors, indicating that they were the keystone taxa of the microbial communities. The hub-subnetwork further showed robust co-occurrence between Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes (Flavobacteriales), Alphaproteobacteria (Rhodobacterales and Rhodospirillales), Marinimicrobia with AOA sublineages, and Nitrospinae (presumably NOB)) reflecting the formation of Degradation-Nitrification microbial assemblage in the hypoxia zone. The subnetworks revealed AOA ecotype-specific modularization and niche partitioning of different AOA sublineages. Interestingly, the recurring co-occurrence of SCM1-like II sublineages with Nitrospinae OTUs formed nitrifiers assemblage in the RNA subnetworks suggested an interaction via nitrite exchange. The Degradation-Nitrification microbial assemblage may contribute substantially to the oxygen consumption in the hypoxia formation in PRE. The use of gadgets to support the learning process during this pandemic has become necessary, such as cellphones, tablets, laptops, and various other gadgets. The blue light on the gadget is one of the causes of asthenopia: tired eyes, symptoms of blurred vision, difficulty focusing, dry eyes, watery irritation, headaches, neck or back tension, and makes the mind tired quickly. This study aims to determine the impact of using gadgets on eye health and how to control it. The research design was cross-sectional in a purposive sample with a survey on 48 students of Universitas Widya Husada Semarang (UWHS) Semarang City Indonesia. Data was taken by surveying a sample of students who took part in online learning using gadgets in smartphones, laptops, and desktop computers. The greatest effect occurred in decreased visual acuity (76.7%) and the smallest on perceptual speed (37.5%). Negative effects were felt by students in the range of close to 50%, but a small number of students only felt effects with high severity. Measures to control the dangers of using gadgets are carried out by arranging gadget duration for learning purposes.

This study presents an investigation of chemical and physical characterization, green process analysis, techno-economic considerations, and carbon emissions for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from plastic and can waste using microwave-assisted synthesis. The microwave-assisted synthesis proves to be more cost-effective, with a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The synthesized material (MIL-Mw-U) demonstrates excellent performance in methylene blue (MB) removal, achieving 98.41% removal, with 97.87% removal although the catalyst is used in the third cycle. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto MIL-Mw-U achieved a maximum capacity of 295.26 mgg⁻¹ at pH 3 and decreased to 258.68 mgg⁻¹ at pH 11 due to OH⁻ competition. The Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9381) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.999) confirmed monolayer chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. This innovative approach supports circular economy principles by converting can and plastic bottle waste into functional material for dye removal, offering sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. © 2025 The Authors

Increasing aquaculture cultivation produces large quantities of wastewater. If not handled properly, it can have negative impacts on the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are one of the phytoremediation methods that can be applied to treat aquaculture effluent. This research was aimed at determining the performance of Cyperus rotundus in removing COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate from the batch CW system. Treatment was carried out for 30 days with variations in the number of plants (10, 15, and 20) and variations in media height (10, 12, and 14 cm). The result showed that aquaculture effluent contains high levels of organic compounds and nutrients, and C. rotundus can grow and thrive in 100% of aquaculture effluent. Besides that, the use of C. rotundus in CWs with the effect of numbers of plants and media height showed performance of COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate with 70, 79, 90, 96, 64, 82, 92, and 48% of removal efficacy, respectively. There was no negative impact observed on C. rotundus growth after exposure to aquaculture effluent, as indicated by the increase in wet weight, dry weight, and growth rate when compared to the control. Thus, adding aquaculture effluent to CWs planted with C. rotundus supports the growth and development of plants while also performing phytoremediation. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Biocoagulants have gained attention as an alternative to chemical coagulants in water and wastewater treatment due to their ability to remove pollutant parameters such as turbidity, suspended solids, color, and organic compounds. Plant-based biocoagulants are currently the most promising due to their abundant availability and reliable performance. A proper preparation of plant-based biocoagulants is required to ensure the active compounds from the plants can be extracted. Plant raw materials are prepared into biocoagulants using drying and grinding, extraction, and purification. In mechanical preparation, drying and grinding exhibit great influence on the performance of plant-based biocoagulants due to the removal of moisture and higher contact with the carrier medium during dissolution. A smaller biocoagulant's size resulted in up to 78 % higher removal of turbidity. In chemical preparation, the oil needs to be removed before extracting the active ingredients to avoid low active compound extraction yields. The defatting of Moringa oleifera seeds showed an 18 % higher protein content. Salt and alcohol extractions were mentioned as superior extraction methods to obtain carbohydrate and protein from plant-based biocoagulants compared to water extraction, with up to a 5 % increment in turbidity removal. Preparation and pretreatment protocols have a great influence on the properties and performance of plant-based biocoagulants. Further extension of research on plant-based biocoagulants should address the problems in the initial characterization of plant material, standard pretreatment and preparation protocols, and real-scale application of plant-based biocoagulants. © 2023 The Author(s)

This study presents a new method for assessing bacterial leaf blight (BLB) in paddy fields using multispectral UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) data through patch fragmentation analysis. Unlike traditional pixel-based methods, which often fail to capture the spatial context, our approach treats pixels as objects and analyzes their spatial relationships to evaluate BLB severity. We used six patch fragmentation metrics derived from binarized vegetation indices to classify BLB damage scores using a random forest algorithm. This method achieves high accuracy (AUC of 0.938) with a 0.5-meter sampling window, offering a more detailed assessment than conventional pixel-based analysis. This study highlights the benefits of incorporating the spatial context and improving BLB monitoring and management. This innovative approach allows agricultural stakeholders to gain valuable insights into the extent and severity of BLB disease infestation, enabling targeted intervention strategies for disease management and mitigation. © 2024, The Authors. City policies and plans play an important role in promoting physical activity through changes in the urban design and transportation systems. The objectives of this study were to describe longitudinal changes in the built environment relevant to leisure-time physical activity and active travel in Sao Paulo city, Brazil, between 2015 and 2020;to describe these changes according to regions of the city, census tracts’ income, and buffer zones around the residences of participants in a cohort. Using data from public online libraries, cross-checked with the specific municipal and state secretariats, the following were measured: public squares, parks, sports facilities, community clubs, outdoor gyms, bike paths, train or subway stations, bus terminals, and primary health care units. To quantify these attributes around the residences, four different buffers: 500 m and 1000 m radial buffers and 500 m and 1000 m network buffers were adopted. An increase was observed in outdoor gyms (+109.6%), bike paths (+67.7%), train or subway stations, bus terminals (+15.4%), sports facilities (+12.0%), and public squares (+8.7%). However, the changes differed according to the region, census tract income, and residential area. The results can serve to foster a discussion on the effects of local policies being executed. In addition, this study highlights important disparities in cities through the different levels evaluated. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The mandatory carbon reduction guidelines and regulations in Indonesia encourage all industrial sectors particularly the petroleum industry to implement decarbonization programs by systematically reducing carbon emissions as part of climate action. Unlike existing carbon emission studies in the petroleum industry, the literature lacks studies on the decarbonization patterns. In addition, the effectiveness of carbon mitigation in the upstream oil and gas field has not been studied so far. This study developed short panel data models to understand the current decarbonization efforts and patterns during 2015–2018. The results indicate that the considered variables are significantly impactful in carbon reduction with different coefficient patterns. It is suggested to associate decarbonization with oil and gas production and highlight energy efficiency optimization to stabilize production. The impact of financial, human, and administrative resources on the supporting facility is critical for executing sustainable carbon mitigation projects. © 2024 The Authors
