The mandatory carbon reduction guidelines and regulations in Indonesia encourage all industrial sectors particularly the petroleum industry to implement decarbonization programs by systematically reducing carbon emissions as part of climate action. Unlike existing carbon emission studies in the petroleum industry, the literature lacks studies on the decarbonization patterns. In addition, the effectiveness of carbon mitigation in the upstream oil and gas field has not been studied so far. This study developed short panel data models to understand the current decarbonization efforts and patterns during 2015–2018. The results indicate that the considered variables are significantly impactful in carbon reduction with different coefficient patterns. It is suggested to associate decarbonization with oil and gas production and highlight energy efficiency optimization to stabilize production. The impact of financial, human, and administrative resources on the supporting facility is critical for executing sustainable carbon mitigation projects. © 2024 The Authors

The purpose of this research was to investigate the accumulation of plastic debris in the Wonorejo River Estuary, Surabaya, Indonesia. Visible plastic debris were collected from three (3) sampling points along the intertidal area of Wonorejo River Estuary. The correlation between sampling points (SPs) and the amount of the collected plastic debris (CPD) was analysed using one-way ANOVA. Result of one-way ANOVA showed that the sampling point was significantly affect the amount of the collected plastic debris (p2 from SP1, 375.97±16.72 g dry weight/m2 from SP2, and 291.13±36.28 g dry weight/m2 from SP3. The highest percentage of collected debris item was plastic bags (up to 57.90%), followed by bottle caps (up to 16.65%). The most identified plastic types were Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) (up to 73.13%), followed by Polypropylene (PP) (up to 17.22%). Understanding the accumulation of plastic debris in estuary is a fundamental requirement to conduct an advance research related to the marine plastic pollution and to determine further actions to solve this problem. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

The aim of this research is to determine the removal efficiency of Cd (II) based on the pH variation and the optimum pH on the batch method, the adsorbent height variation and flow rate in continuous flow column which using tofu solid waste industry which was immobilized silica as adsorbent, also to characterize and to identify functional groups of the absorbent using the FTIR analysis. The pH variation used was 2,3,4,5, and 6. Adsorbent height variation used was 2 cm and 4 cm. Then, variation of flow rate used was 5 ml/min and 10 ml/min. Determination of pH optimum was done using One-Way Anova analysis and continued with Duncan test and descriptive analysis based on the table and graphic. The analysis data of the removal efficiency of Cd (II) in continuous flow column was explained by the descriptive analysis. The pHPCZ was 8.4. The pH optimum was 6 with the removal efficiency 48.14%. The removal efficiency of Cd (II) in continuous flow column for the adsorbent height variation 2 cm and 4 cm which were 38,22% and 43,42% respectively. The removal efficiency of Cd (II) in continuous flow column for the flow rate 5ml/min and 10ml/min each by 38.22% and 39.01%. The result of FTIR analysis of the adsorbent conducted before the adsorption shown that there were functional groups of C=O (vibrate at 1651.07 cm-1), Si-O-Si (462.92 cm-1 and 1095.6 cm-1), O-H (3425.58 cm-1), and N-H (3749.62 cm-1). While, the result of the FTIR analysis after the adsorption shown that there were Si-O-Cd (956.72 cm-1) and Cd-N (412.78 cm-1). © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The coffee industry in Sidoarjo produces coffee waste as coffee ground, coffee husk, and coffee return with the solid waste generation of about 5044.3 Tons/year. The coffee waste characters resemble organic waste, so it has potential as a composted raw material. This study aims to determine the selected variation raw material composition from the coffee industry based on Indonesian National Standard (SNI) Number 10-7030-2004 and the recycle potency of the coffee industry solid waste using composting technology. The research variables are the modified composting method (open windrow composting and Bacary Italian) and the co-composting method. The result of this research for all treatments showed that the concentration range of pH value 6.92-9.54, moisture 34.78-66.60%, C-organic 17.75-33.82%, N 1.45-2.93%, C/N ratio 10-13, P2O5 0.13-0.31%, and K2O 0.89-2.89%. The selected variation raw material composition of bio compost based on the compliance to SNI 10-7030-2004, which is 1.5 kg coffee ground + 1.35 coffee return + 0.15 kg coffee husk + 3 mL EM4 (K10). Based on K10 as the selected variation raw material composition of bio compost, the coffee industry solid waste recyclable is coffee ground 0.64%, coffee husk 0.20% and returned coffee 100%.

Circular economy of bio compost from coffee waste to support sustainable development goals in alleviating poverty in communities around the Sidoarjo coffee industry

In 2016-2021, coffee consumption in Indonesia was predicted to increase by 120,000 tons, impacting the increase of coffee waste. Several large coffee industries in Indonesia are located in Taman District, Sidoarjo Regency. The character of the coffee skin waste contains 44.87% organic C; N of 1.69%; P of 0.18%; K 2.49%, and C / N ratio 10-14. This value indicates that the waste can be used as compost because it meets the criteria in SNI 19-7030-2004 concerning Compost from Organic Waste. This narrative review aims to determine the circular economy of bio compost from the coffee industry solid waste to support SDGs point 1 in alleviating poverty in communities around the Sidoarjo coffee industry. The research results showed bio compost I and II is the alternative product in the circular economy (W11). The coffee waste, coffee ground, coffee skin, and coffee returned collects waste in the circular economy (W10). The raw material composition of Bio compost I such as 1.5 kg coffee ground: 1.35 kg of coffee returned:0.15 kg coffee skin+3mL of EM4 and Bio compost II such as 4.6 kg SCG's:0. 4 kg coffee skin+5 ml EM4. In practice, the circular economy of bio compost I and II can involve Farmer Groups or Youth Organizations around the industry in Taman District, Sidoarjo Regency. Based on data 2020, the total members are 113 people, producing compost of 72,435.5 kg/month with a sales profit of IDR 36,217,750. This practice can support the first point of the SDGs, namely poverty alleviation for communities around the coffee industry. However, studies on the exact circular economy pattern of coffee waste in the Sidoarjo Regency are still needed.

Uncontrolled urban expansion resulting from urbanization has a disastrous impact on agricultural land. This situation is being experienced by the densely populated and fertile island Java in Indonesia. Remote sensing technologies have developed rapidly in recent years, including the creation of Google Earth Engine (GEE). Intensity analysis (IA) is increasingly being used to systematically and substantially analyze land-use/land-cover (LULC) change. As yet, however, no study of land conversion from agriculture to urban areas in Indonesia has adopted GEE and IA approaches simultaneously. Therefore, this study aims to monitor urban penetration to agricultural land in the north coastal region of West Java Province by applying both methods to two time intervals: 2003-2013 and 2013-2020. Landsat data and a robust random forest (RF) classifier available in GEE were chosen for producing LULC maps. Monitoring LULC change using GEE and IA has demonstrated reliable findings. The overall accuracy of Landsat image classification results for 2003, 2013, and 2020 were 88%, 87%, and 88%, respectively. IA outputs at interval levels for all categories showed that the annual change-of-area rate was higher during 2013-2020 than during 2003-2013. At the category level, IA results showed that the area of agricultural land experienced net losses in both periods, with net loss in 2013-2020 being 2.3 times greater than that in 2003-2013 (∼1,850 ha per year). In contrast, the built-up area made net gains in both periods, reaching almost twice as much in the second period as in the first (∼2,030 ha per year). The transition-level IA performed proved that agricultural land had been the primary target for the expansion of built-up areas. The most extensive spatial distribution of land conversion from agriculture to built-up area was concentrated in the regencies of Bekasi, Karawang, and Cirebon. We evaluated the influence of organic matter in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in port sediments using multiple linear regression (MLR) and prediction models. Total sediment PAHs ranged between 45 and 3230 ng/g dw (average: 557 ± 962 ng/g dw), with PAHs primarily originating from river inputs, confined to areas near the estuaries. Coal/biomaterial combustion and petroleum mainly contribute to the presence of PAHs along estuaries, with medium-high to high ecological risks. MLR TPAHs prediction model included variables, namely, the marine-derived total organic carbon (TOC), terrestrial fraction of organic matter (F), and carbon-to‑nitrogen ratio (CNR). Results indicate that mainly marine- followed by terrestrially-derived organic matter influenced sediment PAH distribution. Total organic nitrogen and CNR were variables in the toxic equivalent (TEQ) prediction model, demonstrating that terrestrial pollution sources primarily influenced TEQ. The study analyzes and predicts the impact of organic matter and its sources on the fate and transport of PAHs in port sediments.

Cheese-making wastes utilization has been done in KPBS (The Dairy Farmer Cooperatives of South Bandung) and affect the surrounding communities. The research aimed to determine the perception of the community towards the utilization of cheese-making wastes that has been done. Cluster random sampling was taken on three groups of respondents, namely KPBS employees, KPBS member farmers and the affected communities around KPBS. Randomized numerical tables used to determine the respondent which resulted 24 respondents of KPBS employees, 41 respondents of KPBS member farmers and 28 respondents of affected communities around KPBS, with the total of 93 respondents. Questionnaires used to obtain the community perceptions of cheese-making wastes utilization and its sustainability that covered social, economic, environmental and technological dimension with five levels Likert scale to express the respondent's preference. Results showed that the communities perception of cheese-making wastes utilization on social, economic and ecological dimension shown neutral to positives perception with average Likert score of 3.61, 3.82 and 3.35 respectively, while technological knowledge dimension shown neutral to negative perception (2.99) which could be a threat towards cheese-making sustainability. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Bacteriophage (phages) are viruses that exclusively use bacterial cells for propagation, killing the bacterial host in the process. In phage therapy, phages are used to reduce bacterial numbers, thereby curing bacterial infections. Although this principle is conceptually straightforward, its practical application faces several hurdles. In this Primer, the practical aspects of phage therapy are outlined. We introduce the microbiological methods used to prepare and characterize phages and elucidate their interactions with bacteria. The discussion covers how the information in complete phage genome sequences is used, along with how RNA sequencing can enhance our understanding of phage biology. Selection parameters for therapeutic phages for clinical applications and key elements in industrial-scale phage production are provided. A summary of clinical trials both past and present, phage administration and dosing issues is analysed, as well as limitations associated with phage therapy and mitigation strategies. Finally, we speculate on the future of phage therapy.

EDTA is used in soil remediation because of its ability to move metal in the soil matrix. EDTA solutions can dissolve heavy metals including Pb. Codiaeum varigatum is an ornamental plant in addition to having a high aesthetic, ecological and economic value. In this study analyzes the effect of EDTA on the growth and accumulation of metals in *** plants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of EDTA on growth, photosynthetic pigment content and Pb accumulation in *** plants. Pot experiments using *** with lead 500 Pb kg-1 soil and different levels of EDTA (mM) 5,10and 20. The parameters studied included plant biomass, Pb accumulation in plant and photosynthetic pigment content measured after 30 days. The results showed that EDTA concentration of 20 mM caused an increase in Pb accumulation and a decrease in plant biomass and photosynthetic pigment content. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.
