Baseline waste management data in North Lombok District

An integrated waste management system requires baseline data, including waste generation analysis, composition density, and waste characteristics. Baseline data is needed to determine the proper waste management strategy. This research was conducted by measuring directly from the source of waste carried out by stratified sampling following SNI 19-3964-1994. The location of the study was carried out in Tanjung and Gangga districts because this location is considered to represent North Lombok Regency. The research was conducted using 100 samples of household waste. The study results on the composition of waste in the North Lombok Regency consisted of organic waste, plastic waste, paper, cloth, wood, glass, metal, and rubber waste. The dominant composition is organic waste. The characteristics of waste in the North Lombok Regency have a higher water content than the water content of waste in general. All the characteristics tested indicate that the waste in North Lombok Regency requires several treatments before processing waste, such as reducing the water content and increasing the C/N ratio. Based on the characteristics and composition of the waste, composting or incineration is the suitable waste management method in North Lombok Regency.

Laundry services are emerging in every corner of Bali, particularly at suburban area, from cities to villages. These services help the community to ease their burden. However, the burden for the environment is increase. The wastewater from the laundries should be controlled, which should be handled natural ways. One way of reducing the dangerous chemical from the laundry wastewater can be done by Vertical-Sub-surface Flow Constructed Wetland system, using volcanic rocks as substrate of plant grow and the plant as filters. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of volcanic rock and Canna plants as a filter for the laundry wastewater. The volcanic rock as substrate for the plant grows was place in layers in a drum and the laundry wastewater was flowed. The parameter of wastewater laundry, such as TDS, BOD, COD and total phosphate were measured before and after treatment. The treatment was run for 6 weeks. The result shows that this system is effective that overall can reduce the parameter measured for 53.86%. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Peatland Plays A Pivotal Role In Providing Natural Resource Production And environmental Services For Human Welfare. However, Many Studies Have Mentioned The Impact Of Dryland Cultivation In Peatland On The Shifting Carbon Balance In The Ecosystem That Clearly Will Alter The Interaction Of These Two Ecosystem Services. The Goal Of This study, Conducted Under The Framework Of The System Of environmental-Economic Accounting (Seea) Was To Monetary Value The Ecosystem Services (Es) Of Provisioning And Carbon Regulating Services Of The Gaung-Batang Tuaka Peat Hydrological Unit (Khg). We Focused On Khg In Response To Regulation No.57/2016, Which Highlights Ecosystem Boundary As A New Basis For Peatland Management. Under The Seea Framework, Ecosystem Services Become A Benefit When Utilized By Ecosystem Beneficiaries. In This Case, Provisioning Services Will Be Valued Only For Cultivated Land, While Carbon Services Calculated For The Entire study Area (Global Beneficiaries). Our study Showed That The Provisioning Services And Carbon Services Are Under The Trade-Off Condition, Where The Monetary Value Of Provisioning Services Increased At A Slower Rate (0.50 Million Usd Annually) Than The Monetary Loss Of The Benefit Of Carbon Services (5.28 Million Usd Annually), Greatly Exceeded The Monetary Value Of Provisioning Services. We Highlight Two Main Strategies To Increase The Monetary Value Of The Khg Towards A Synergy Condition, Namely Increased Value-Added By Reducing The Productivity Gap Among Es Beneficiaries And Large-Scale Adoption Of A Profitable Cultivation System With Minimum Peat Disturbance. The valorization of by-products from green biorefineries is critical for environmental sustainability and economic viability. During the extraction of leaf proteins from alfalfa green biomass, significant volumes of brown juice (BJ) are generated. This study assessed the phytohormonal profile and anti-nutritional elements in BJ post-lacto-fermentation, examining its potential as a plant biostimulant. Fresh BJ was lacto-fermented using Pediococcus acidilactici, Lactobacillus paracasei, and Lactobacillus plantarum at 35 °C for 48 h. Phytochemical analysis via HPLC-MS/MS identified 18 saponins in BJ, with only medicagenic acid remaining post-fermentation, whose concentration increased 39-fold. Additionally, 23 plant hormone derivatives were quantified, with significant increases observed in indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellin GA1, jasmonic acid, and abscisic acid, while others like p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid decreased. These results demonstrate lacto-fermentation’s ability to stabilize BJ, reduce haemolytic saponins, and enhance phytohormone concentrations, supporting its utility as a sustainable plant growth enhancer. © The Author(s) 2025.

The development of new approach methodologies (NAMs) to replace current in vivo testing for the safety assessment of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is hindered by the scarcity of validated experimental data for a broad range of ENMs. We introduce a framework to address this challenge by harnessing the collective expertise of professionals from multiple complementary and related fields (‘wisdom of crowds’ or WoC). By integrating expert insights, we aim to fill data gaps and generate consensus concern scores for diverse ENMs, thereby enhancing the predictive power of nanosafety computational models. Our investigation reveals an alignment between expert opinion and experimental data, providing robust estimations of concern levels. Building upon these findings, we employ predictive machine learning models trained on the newly defined concern scores, ENM descriptors, and gene expression profiles, to quantify potential harm across various toxicity endpoints. These models further revealed key genes potentially involved in underlying toxicity mechanisms. Notably, genes associated with metal ion homeostasis, inflammation, and oxidative stress emerge as predictors of ENM toxicity across diverse endpoints. This study showcases the value of integrating expert knowledge and computational modeling to address the complexity of nanomaterial safety. Our work suggests that this interdisciplinary approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of safety assessment in the rapidly evolving landscape of nanotechnology. © 2025, The Authors. The dehydration of ethanol into diethyl ether over a SO4/SiO2 catalyst was investigated. The SO4/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by the sulfation method using 1, 2, and 3 M of sulfuric acid (SS1, SS2, and SS3) via hydrothermal treatment. This study is focused on the synthesis of a SO4/SiO2 catalyst with high total acidity that can be subsequently utilized to convert ethanol into diethyl ether. The total acidity test revealed that the sulfation process increased the total acidity of SiO2. The SS2 catalyst (with 2 M sulfuric acid) displayed the highest total acidity of 7.77 mmol/g, whereas the SiO2 total acidity was only 0.11 mmol/g. Meanwhile, the SS3 catalyst (with 3 M sulfuric acid) has a lower total acidity of 7.09 mmol/g due to the distribution of sulfate groups on the surface having reached its optimum condition. The crystallinity and structure of the SS2 catalyst were not affected by the hydrothermal treatment or the sulfate process on silica. Furthermore, The SS2 catalyst characteristics in the presence of sulfate lead to a flaky surface in the morphology and non-uniform particle size. In addition, the surface area and pore volume of the SS2 catalyst decreased (482.56–172.26 m2/g) and (0.297–0.253 cc/g), respectively, because of the presence of sulfate on the silica surface. The SS2 catalyst's pore shape information explains the formation of non-uniform pore sizes and shapes. Finally, the activity and selectivity of SO4/SiO2 catalysts in the conversion of ethanol to diethyl ether yielded the highest ethanol conversion of 70.01% and diethyl ether product of 9.05% from the SS2 catalyst (the catalyst with the highest total acidity). Variations in temperature reaction conditions (175–225 °C) show an optimum reaction temperature to produce diethyl ether at 200 °C (11.36%). © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

The balance between economic, social, and environmental aspects should be fulfilled in the planning of sustainable regional development. The main engine of regional economic development is the leading sector, which is characterized by strong linkage between forward and backward sectors. This research is intended to analyze leading sectors in West Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan Province. The data used is the 2012 IO (Input-output) table, analysed using the Input-Output analysis method. Result of the research indicates that the leading sectors of West Kotawaringin Regency are agriculture;transportation and communication;trade, hotel and restaurant;and processing industry. As for the 48 sector groups, for the agricultural sector are rubber, wood, and oil palm;transportation and communication sector are river, lake and harbor transportation, sea transportation, and air transportation;trade, hotel, and restaurant sector is hotels and restaurants followed by trade. The world's continuous demographic expansion has driven a growing demand for a stable food supply, making the agriculture sector a key foundation for sustainable food production. However, the widespread use of conventional fertilizers has resulted in significant environmental and economic drawbacks, including inefficient nutrient delivery and nutrient leaching. These challenges highlight the urgent need for innovative agricultural solutions. This article reviews the adverse impacts of conventional fertilizer use on ecosystems and discusses the transition to slow-release fertilizers (SRF) as a promising alternative. SRF offers more controlled nutrient release, reducing nutrient loss and improving efficiency compared to traditional fertilizers. The article examines different types of SRF, their mechanisms, advantages, limitations, and their potential to transform modern agriculture by addressing both environmental concerns and crop nutrient management. Key challenges, including high production costs and the use of non-biodegradable coatings, are addressed. This review highlights the potential of bio-based coatings as replacements for non-renewable petroleum-based materials in SRFs, promoting sustainable practices and reducing potential toxicity in agricultural applications. The evolution of SRFs into multifunctional fertilizers is also discussed, emphasizing their expanding roles beyond controlled nutrient release. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Implementation Effectiveness of Mercury Elimination Policies in Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining

This study evaluated the implementation effectiveness of mercury elimination policies in the Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) at Bolaang Mongondow District. A qualitative method used as an explanatory design through interviews and questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed using the Regulatory Gap Analysis method. Based on the data obtained, only 33% of respondents (community representatives) were aware of the mercury elimination policy. 75% of respondents (relevant agencies) have been aware of UU No. 11/2017 about the ratification of the Minamata Convention and the national action plan of the mercury elimination in gold processing in 2014-2018 ESDM (RAN-PPM PE 2014-2018 ESDM). 63% of respondents were aware of PP No. 21/2019 about the national action plan for reduction and elimination of mercury (PP 21/2019 RAN-PPM), and only 50% of respondents who were aware of PMK No. 57/2016 about the national action plan for controlling health impacts due to mercury exposure in 2016-2020 (PMK 57/2016 RAN-PDKAM). The average gap value based on the evaluation result of each policy was: -0.4 in RAN-PPM PE 2014-2018 ESDM, -0.24 in PP 21/2019 RAN-PPM, and -0.21 in PMK 57/2016 RAN-PDKAM. Therefore, the implementation of these policies is unsuccessful in overcoming mercury usage in the ASGM.
