Community Perception of Cheese-Making Wastes Utilization and its Sustainability

Cheese-making wastes utilization has been done in KPBS (The Dairy Farmer Cooperatives of South Bandung) and affect the surrounding communities. The research aimed to determine the perception of the community towards the utilization of cheese-making wastes that has been done. Cluster random sampling was taken on three groups of respondents, namely KPBS employees, KPBS member farmers and the affected communities around KPBS. Randomized numerical tables used to determine the respondent which resulted 24 respondents of KPBS employees, 41 respondents of KPBS member farmers and 28 respondents of affected communities around KPBS, with the total of 93 respondents. Questionnaires used to obtain the community perceptions of cheese-making wastes utilization and its sustainability that covered social, economic, environmental and technological dimension with five levels Likert scale to express the respondent's preference. Results showed that the communities perception of cheese-making wastes utilization on social, economic and ecological dimension shown neutral to positives perception with average Likert score of 3.61, 3.82 and 3.35 respectively, while technological knowledge dimension shown neutral to negative perception (2.99) which could be a threat towards cheese-making sustainability.

Hyper-Kamiokande is a multi-purpose next generation neutrino experiment. The detector is a two-layered cylindrical shape ultra-pure water tank, with its height of 64 m and diameter of 71 m. The inner detector will be surrounded by tens of thousands of twenty-inch photosensors and multi-PMT modules to detect water Cherenkov radiation due to the charged particles and provide our fiducial volume of 188 kt. This detection technique is established by Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande. As the successor of these experiments, Hyper-K will be located deep underground, 600 m below Mt. Tochibora at Kamioka in Japan to reduce cosmic-ray backgrounds. Besides our physics program with accelerator neutrino, atmospheric neutrino and proton decay, neutrino astrophysics is an important research topic for Hyper-K. With its fruitful physics research programs, Hyper-K will play a critical role in the next neutrino physics frontier. It will also provide important information via astrophysical neutrino measurements, i.e., solar neutrino, supernova burst neutrinos and supernova relic neutrino. Managing laundry wastewater

Laundry services are emerging in every corner of Bali, particularly at suburban area, from cities to villages. These services help the community to ease their burden. However, the burden for the environment is increase. The wastewater from the laundries should be controlled, which should be handled natural ways. One way of reducing the dangerous chemical from the laundry wastewater can be done by Vertical-Sub-surface Flow Constructed Wetland system, using volcanic rocks as substrate of plant grow and the plant as filters. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of volcanic rock and Canna plants as a filter for the laundry wastewater. The volcanic rock as substrate for the plant grows was place in layers in a drum and the laundry wastewater was flowed. The parameter of wastewater laundry, such as TDS, BOD, COD and total phosphate were measured before and after treatment. The treatment was run for 6 weeks. The result shows that this system is effective that overall can reduce the parameter measured for 53.86%.

EDTA is used in soil remediation because of its ability to move metal in the soil matrix. EDTA solutions can dissolve heavy metals including Pb. Codiaeum varigatum is an ornamental plant in addition to having a high aesthetic, ecological and economic value. In this study analyzes the effect of EDTA on the growth and accumulation of metals in *** plants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of EDTA on growth, photosynthetic pigment content and Pb accumulation in *** plants. Pot experiments using *** with lead 500 Pb kg-1 soil and different levels of EDTA (mM) 5,10and 20. The parameters studied included plant biomass, Pb accumulation in plant and photosynthetic pigment content measured after 30 days. The results showed that EDTA concentration of 20 mM caused an increase in Pb accumulation and a decrease in plant biomass and photosynthetic pigment content.

The solution to solve these challenges is the waste management. The waste management is needed to solve starting from upstream to downstream. The waste management in downstream is in the landfill. The management Landfill not only manages solid waste but also waste water treatment. One form of waste water treatments in a landfill is the leachate treatment. The leachate treatment is a priority for management in landfill because it can reduce water, soil, air pollution in the landfill and the surrounding environment. In order to determine the best option among several alternatives to manage the leachate treatment, this research used Analytic Network Process (ANP) with three levels (actors, criteria, and alternatives). Secondary and primary data collection was carried out from April until June 2019 in Indonesia. Data were collected through a survey using questionnaire instrument. Participants of questionnaire amount of 20 people. The participants from lecturers, government, and society. The finding of this research showed that the leachate treatment using coagulation-flocculation was easier to be used in Indonesia.

Effects of compression ratio on physical and mechanical properties of bamboo oriented strand board

The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of a bamboo-oriented strand board (BOSB) under various compression ratios. The raw material of BOSB was betung (Dendrocalamus asper) strand that steamed and followed by rinsing with a 1% NaOH solution. BOSB with the dimensions of 30 × 30 × 0.9 cm3 were manufactured with a compression ratio of five levels i.e. 1.15; 1.25; 1.35; 1.44; and 1.54. Three layers of BOSB were made with a shelling ratio of 50:50. Phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive (SC=43%) was added with 8% concentration, while paraffin was used as much as 1% of the dry weight of the oven strand. Strand geometry evaluation was carried out on 100 strands randomly. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated according to JIS A 5908-2003. The results showed that relatively homogeny strand geometry in this research was suitable to manufacture of BOSB. Increasing in BOSB compression ratio up to 1.54 increased mechanical properties. However, the increase of the BOSB compression ratio was decreased the dimensional stability. The optimum BOSB compression ratio was 1.35.

Adsorption of Zinc(II) onto Zn(II)-Ionic Imprinted Polymer

A new Zn(II)-ionic imprinted polymer via precipitation polymerization using 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) as a ligand, methacrylic acid (MAA) as functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker has been prepared. The benzoyl peroxide and ethanol/acetonitrile (2:1) mixture were used as initiator and porogen, respectively. The template Zn(II) ion was removed from the polymer by leaching with a solution of 1 M HNO3. The experimental parameters for adsorption, such as pH of a solution, contact time, and initial zinc concentration, have been optimized. The optimum conditions of zinc adsorption onto the ionic imprinted polymer (IIP) was at pH 5.5 and contact time 15 min. The equilibrium data could be better described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of IIP was 20.833 mg/g.

The using of pesticides in shallot cultivation in the Brebes Regency is very intensive. It can have an impact on health and the environment. Several factors influence the behavior of shallots farmers in the use of pesticides. The purpose of this research was to identify the dominant factors that influence the behavior of shallots farmers in the use of pesticides. Interviews were conducted on 228 shallots farmers in Brebes, Central Java, Indonesia. Information collected includes the behavior of farmers in the use of pesticides, the characteristics of farmers, agricultural facilities, and farmers' knowledge of pesticides. Data analysis used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques. Based on the results of the analysis, that the behavior of farmers in the use of pesticides was influenced by the characteristic factors of 8%, agricultural facilities 26% and knowledge by 36%. The variables that have the most influence on the characteristic factors were the length of farming, the factor of the facility was the supply of seeds, and the factor of knowledge was information between groups. The dominant factor that most influences the behavior of farmers in the use of pesticides was the knowledge factor with the most dominant variable was the information between groups. Based on our study, it was revealed that effective counseling about the wise use of pesticides could be done through empowering farmer groups.

The dynamic model of paddy field conversion control in Citarum watershed

The rate of population growth and the increase in food needs for consumption have made the need for paddy fields higher. On the other hand, the pressure on paddy fields is quite intense so that the conversion of paddy fields is quite challenging to be controlled. Moreover, the concerns about food security and food sovereignty have become critical issues. The high demand for land utilization has caused pressure on paddy fields in the Citarum watershed. The objective of this study is to build a model for maintaining paddy fields in the Citarum watershed. The study was conducted from June to September 2015. The method of this research is a modelling using system dynamics approach by simulating time series data. From the simulation, it can be concluded that the rate of conversion of paddy fields will still be high if there is no specific policy in its protection. This fact can be seen from various scenario conditions, either in existing circumstances, in the optimistic scenario, as well as in a moderate scenario. The strategy that can be done is that paddy fields should be specially protected or owned by the government to minimize the rate of conversion.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 100,204 CRC cases and 154,587 controls of European and east Asian ancestry, identifying 205 independent risk associations, of which 50 were unreported. We performed integrative genomic, transcriptomic and methylomic analyses across large bowel mucosa and other tissues. Transcriptome- and methylome-wide association studies revealed an additional 53 risk associations. We identified 155 high-confidence effector genes functionally linked to CRC risk, many of which had no previously established role in CRC. These have multiple different functions and specifically indicate that variation in normal colorectal homeostasis, proliferation, cell adhesion, migration, immunity and microbial interactions determines CRC risk. Crosstissue analyses indicated that over a third of effector genes most probably act outside the colonic mucosa. Our findings provide insights into colorectal oncogenesis and highlight potential targets across tissues for new CRC treatment and chemoprevention strategies.
