Satellite measurements of nitrogen dioxide have been used to infer nitrogen oxide emissions, a critical component in tropospheric chemistry and pollution. New observations from the Geostationary environmental Monitoring Spectrometer offer a breakthrough by providing a daytime record of nitrogen dioxide over Asia. Here we present the summertime diurnal patterns of nitrogen dioxide at major cities, power plant regions, and the Strait of Malacca. The Geostationary environmental Monitoring Spectrometer data across various regions show high nitrogen dioxide in the morning which decrease in the afternoon, with varying hourly peaks, troughs, and amplitudes reflecting diurnal characteristics of local emissions and chemistry. Nitrogen oxide emissions inferred from Geostationary environmental Monitoring Spectrometer and the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry also show distinct patterns among regions: early morning peaks occur over Hanoi, Guangzhou, and Bangkok;mid-to-late morning peaks appear over Seoul and Beijing;and late afternoon peaks are noted in the Yangtze River Delta region. Top-down emissions incorporating temporal changes in the Geostationary environmental Monitoring Spectrometer nitrogen dioxide yield the most accurate nitrogen dioxide simulations. Automated Highway systems (AHS) offer a potential solution that could triple current freeway capacity. A three-fold increase in freeway capacity would translate into a significant increase in peak freeway traffic flow. The corresponding increase of flow on urban roads due to exiting AHS vehicles could quickly overwhelm the capacity of urban streets and lead to critical bottlenecking of AHS flow. If exiting AHS vehicles can not sufficiently clear AHS exits because the local streets are jammed, traffic will spill onto the AHS mainline and reduce AHS capacity. The loss of AHS capacity due to congestion in urban destinations and the resulting back spill of traffic onto the AHS will greatly detract from the AHS system. The following Non-Intermodal Interface (NII) and Intermodal Interface (II) strategies are proposed as solutions to this critical bottleneck problem: 1) the dispersion of flow through AHS networks;2) the dispersion of flow at commuter destinations;and 3) the consolidation of flow at central locations. Specifically, smart street signals and prioritized street design;intermodal terminals;and automated garages are identified as potential solutions. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each of the three general strategies. Specifically, it discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each of the four specific solutions through simulated scenarios which account for varying ramp volumes, trip attraction patterns, and urban structures. Our investigation shows that creative combinations of these methods can be useful to integrate future AHS with local road networks. © 1996 IEEE.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been recognized as one of the biggest public health issues of the 21 st century. Both ARB and ARGs have been determined in water after treatment with conventional disinfectants. Ultraviolet (UV) technology has been seen growth in application to disinfect the water. However, UV method alone is not adequate to degrade ARGs in water. Researchers are investigating the combination of UV with other oxidants (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and photocatalysts) to harness the high reactivity of produced reactive species (C1-, C1O -, Cl2-,-OH, and SO4-_) in such processes with constituents of cell (e.g., deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and its components) in order to increase the degradation efficiency of ARGs. This paper briefly reviews the current status of different UV-based treatments (UV/chlorination, UV/H2O2, UV/PMS, and UV-photocatalysis) to degrade ARGs and to control horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in water. The review also provides discussion on the mechanism of degradation of ARGs and application of q-PCR and gel electrophoresis to obtain insights of the fate of ARGs during UV-based treatment processes.

The application of computerised optimisation techniques to the design of low and net-zero energy buildings would provide building designers with a powerful design tool. This paper presents such a tool that is being developed that links TRNSYS energy simulation with an optimisation program based on genetic algorithms. This early design stage optimisation tool optimises 17 parameters including building width to length ratio, heating system type, solar thermal collector type and size, window sizes by orientation, and more, to find multiple design configurations that achieve a set energy consumption target.

Dry-season sources of riverine sediment from the tropical mixed urban-agricultural watershed of the Mun River Basin in northeastern Thailand

Northeastern(NE) Thailand is well recognized as the land for rice cropping and consequently, it is potentially contaminated with chemicals from soil fertilization, pest/weed control, and urban *** Mun River basin in NE Thailand principally is comprised of rice paddies and sedimentation in the river has been pronounced, but the studies on sediment source identification are limited. The current study aims to identify sediment sources in the Mun River basin and discuss possible impacts on ecosystems attributed to exposure to polluted sediment. The assessment relies upon physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents(iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), copper(Cu), chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni),and Zinc(Zn)) in the fine-grained sediment(<63 μm) taken from the Mun River basin and the Chi River in the dry season of 2020-2021. The findings revealed that the heavy metals in the sediment had not accumulated to levels of concern. Most sediment was from natural sources, including Fe-and Mn-rich sediment, Cr-dominant sediment, and Ni-and Cu-rich sediment. Fe-and Zn-rich sediment was, however, found in the urban watershed of Lam Ta Klong, and it could originate from mixed urban sources. Ferich sediment was predominant in the Mun River basin, which and could be a significant sink and source of toxic elements from agricultural and urban discharges. It is suggested that the toxic compounds in the sediment should be consistently monitored, whereas ecological and health risk assessment should be focused on the mobile forms.

This study examines a scenario combining a prolonged solar minimum, like the historical Maunder Minimum, with the increased CO2 emissions characteristic of the industrial era. Two scenarios were developed in NCAR/CESM 2.0 implemented at LAMMOC/UFF to create simulations from 1850 to 2000, it contrasts differing radiative forcings from 1950 onward—one reflecting actual observed changes, including rising CO2 levels, and the other simulating a decrease in solar output like that during the Maunder Minimum but with continued CO2 growth. The results were validated against ERA5 data and 20th-century reanalysis. By calculating meridional averages at 30-degree latitude intervals, distinct regional impacts of the Maunder Minimum were identified. Notably the simulated Maunder Minimum reduced global warming by and even mitigated 70 % in HS in the last decade of the 20th century. However, this attenuation was lower in the HN, especially in the 30–60N region where no attenuation was observed.

We present some improvements on interpolation based control (IC) for linear discrete-time systems with polyhedral constraints on the control and the states variables. The plant may be uncertain, time-varying, and subject to bounded disturbances. Roughly speaking, IC approach is based on the interpolation between an inner and an outer controller. The extension presented here is twofold. On the one hand, the IC approach is extended to deal with higher order inner controllers, making it e.g. possible to incorporate integral action in a vicinity of the origin. On the other hand, this paper presents a modification that better exploits the control signal range. As with previous IC strategies, the presented method demands relatively low online computational resources, and is applicable also to uncertain plants. The benefits of the improved scheme are illustrated in some examples. © 2017

Objectives Although previous epidemiological studies have reported the effects of fetal exposure to phthalates and phenols on birth outcomes, evidence is limited. The objective of this study was to investigate whether prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals [EDCs;phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA)] is associated with birth outcomes and whether there are sex-specific *** We used data from the Korean CHildren’s environmental health Study (Ko-CHENS) cohort. Exposure to phthalates and BPA was measured by urine tests, and the information on outcomes and confounders was obtained from delivery records, biomarker assessment, and a self-reported questionnaire. We performed multivariate logistic regression to estimate the association between exposure to individual EDCs and each birth outcome. Additionally, to evaluate the effects of EDC mixture exposure, we performed weighted quantile sum regression analysis. Subgroup analysis stratified by maternal age and sex at birth was performed to examine potential differences in *** This study included 2,176 mother-child pairs from the Ko-CHENS. We observed a significant association between the risk of PTB and exposure to BPA during early pregnancy and mono-carboxyoctyl phthalate (MCOP) during late pregnancy, with odds ratios of 1.23 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.49) and 1.29 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.62), respectively. Additionally, there was a positive association between exposure to MCOP during early pregnancy and the risk of LBW (OR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.89). For male infants, exposure to MCOP during early pregnancy was associated with the risk of LBW (OR: 2.44, 95% CI: 1.43, 4.15), and exposure to MCOP during late pregnancy was associated with the risk of PTB (OR 1.45, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.02).Conclusions This study presents quantitative evidence for the association between prenatal exposure to EDCs, especially BPA and MCOP, and PTB/LBW. To reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in housing construction, the energy-intensive processes and life-cycle stages should be identified and integrated. The environmental impact of vertically integrated factory-built homes (VIHs) constructed with increased material inputs in Japan's northern island of Hokkaido was assessed using life-cycle inventory (LCI) analysis methods. Manufacturing process energy and CO₂ intensities of the homes were evaluated based on the material inputs. They were compared with those of a counterpart home hypothetically built using the vertically integrated construction methods, but in accordance with the specifications of a less material-intensive conventional home (CH) in Hokkaido today. Cumulative household energy consumption and CO₂ emissions were evaluated and compared with those of the production stages. The annual household energy consumption was compared among a VIH, a CH, and an average home in Hokkaido. The energy intensity of the VIH was 3.9 GJ production energy per m² of floor area, 59% higher than that of the CH. Net CO₂ emissions during VIH manufacturing processes were 293 kg/m², after discounting the carbon fixation during tree growth. The cumulative use-phase household energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of a VIH will exceed energy consumption and CO₂ emissions during the initial production stage in less than six years. Although VIHs housed 21% more residents on average, the energy consumption per m² was 17% lower than that of a CH. This may indicate that using more materials initially can lead to better energy efficiency.

A new semi-automatic processing system for classification of airborne laser scanner cloud points is developed. To mitigate the difficulty caused by the complex distribution of objects on earth's surface, wavelet was adopted in size-based clustering of laser points. A hybrid method of processing laser scanner data in both grid and raw formats was also adopted to speed up the processing time and adjust the smoothing effect of interpolation. The processing focused on processing the data acquired over urban area. This paper presents and explains the components of the system using the test data acquired over Shinjuku area, Tokyo, Japan.
