Heavy metals in agricultural soil in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Research about farmland pollution by heavy metals/metalloids in China has drawn growing ***,there was rare information on spatiotemporal evolution and pollution levels of heavy metals in the major grainproducing *** extracted and examined data from 276 publications between 2010 and 2021 covering five major grain-producing regions in China from 2010 to *** evolution characteristics of main heavy metals/metalloids was obtained by *** addition,subgroup analyses were carried out to study preliminary correlations related to accumulation of the ***(Cd)was found to be the most prevailing pollutant in the regions in terms of both spatial distribution and temporal *** Huang-Huai-Hai Plain was the most severely *** of Cd,mercury(Hg)and copper(Cu)increased from 2010 to 2015 when compared with the 1990 background ***,the levels of five key heavy metals(Cd,Cu,Hg,lead[Pb]and zinc[Zn])showed increasing trends from 2016 to 2021 in all five *** pH and mean annual precipitation had variable influences on heavy metal *** soil and areas with less rainfall faced higher pollution *** cropped with mixed species showed smaller effect sizes of heavy metals than those with single upland crop,suggesting that mixed farmland use patterns could alleviate the levels of heavy metals in *** various soil remediation efforts,farmland projects only held a small market *** findings are important to support the research of risk assessment,regulatory development,pollution prevention,fund allocation and remediation actions.

The sustainability of building infrastructure has been a growing critical global concern. However, stakeholders often overlook the sustainability aspect of systems in their everyday lives. This paper presents an exploration of the potential of augmented reality (AR) technology as a tool for enhancing public engagement around sustainable systems in buildings. We introduce an innovative approach to address the challenge of gap between sustainable infrastructure and user awareness. Through data collection such as access counts, usage duration, and user feedback, we can evaluate the effectiveness of AR applications in improving awareness and engagement in sustainability. This study illustrates how AR technology can facilitate a deeper connection between the public and sustainable systems, thus paving the way for a more environmentally friendly society. © 2024 ISARC. Evidence-Based Design (EBD), the judicious and conscientious use of current best evidence to make design decisions for unique projects, is being applied to the design of healthcare facilities with increasing frequency. Because of both the need to replace and expand aging buildings and a retiring baby boom generation, construction of healthcare facilities is currently on the rise in the US. Advocates of EBD argue that its rigorous application will reduce incidence of medical error and improve rates of patient recovery. However, while some promises made by EBD can be scientifically substantiated, design of facilities may not be the only appropriate solution to the problems EBD advocates cite;healthcare facility designers are pressing for EBD adoption, even when a less costly, non-capital program response might be equally effective. This paper suggests that while the error-proofing logic of EBD makes sense, a structured framework for the "Five Whys" should be rigorously implemented by design decision-makers, to ensure that multiple options are considered before final solutions are adopted.

Modern societal-scale infrastructures (e.g., buildings, roads, railways, and power supplies) that are defined by spatially distributed network structures, concurrent subsystem-level behaviours, distributed control and decision making, and interdependencies among subsystems that are not always well understood. During both Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, it quickly became evident a disturbance in one system can impact other networks in ways that are both unexpected and undesirable. Such outcomes put engineering designers and urban planners (decision makers) in a tough spot where quantitative decision-making regarding the adequacy of system infrastructure is complicated by the presence of newfound system interactions. This paper takes a first step toward providing designers and planners with computational support for simulation of distributed system behaviours with system-level interactions. We describe an experimental software prototype for distributed event-based system behaviour modelling with ontologies, rules checking and message passing mechanisms. Key features of the software architecture are demonstrated through the development of two scenarios: (1) A family interacting with a school system, and (2) Simulation of adjustments to the Washington DC Metro System schedule in response to a severe storm. Integrated simulation-optimization approach for real-time dynamic modeling and process control of surfactant-enhanced remediation at petroleum-contaminated sites

Surfactant-enhanced remediation is an effective approach for dealing with subsurface-contaminated sites. However, in studying and controlling the related processes, difficulties exist in incorporating a complicated numerical simulation model that is needed for process forecasting within a real-time nonlinear optimization framework that is critical for supporting process control. In this study, an integrated simulation-optimization approach was developed for supporting real-time dynamic modeling and process control of surfactant-enhanced remediation at petroleum-contaminated sites. Subsurface modeling is combined with a dual-response surface method to develop a system for generating optimum operation conditions under various site conditions, through the support of a nonlinear optimization model. The development methodology was applied to a real-world case study in western Canada. Using the developed three-dimensional multiphase and multicomponent model, the surfactant-enhanced remediation process that is being implemented on the study site was simulated. The results provide useful information for further dual-response surface analysis to support the development of an optimization model to determine optimum process operation conditions. Under each initial contaminant concentration, optimum operation conditions can then be identified through this combined dual-response surface method optimization approach. Thus, a decision support system can then be produced to guide decisions of remediation process control under various site conditions.

Systemic evaluation of spatio-temporal variations in travel time reliability due to a toll road over time

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of toll roads in reducing congestion and improving travel time reliability on streets within its vicinity, over time. The data, from the year 2013 to 2017, for the Triangle Expressway in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina was used in the systemic evaluation process. The spatial and temporal variations in the travel time distributions on the toll road, parallel route, and near-vicinity cross-streets (in a 2-mile buffer) were evaluated. The average travel time (ATT), the 95th percentile travel time (or planning time, PT), the buffer time (BT), and the buffer time index (BTI) were computed for each link by the day-of-the-week and the time-of-the-day. Though there was an improvement in travel time after the speed limit change in the year 2014, the travel time reliability got reduced on the Triangle Expressway. Over time, there was a gradual improvement in BT and BTI. The parallel route reliability decreased significantly over time, whereas the travel time reliability of cross-streets showed a consistent trend. The stabilization of travel time distributions and the reliability measures in the year 2017 indicate that further reduction in performance measures may not be expected in the next few years on the near-vicinity links. © 2020 The Author(s). A recent article published in Science urges mandatory indoor air quality (IAQ) standards in public spaces, focusing on protecting public health, especially against diseases such as COVID-19, but also IAQ in general (). Given the significance of this topic to our society, this short communication aims to provide commentary on the article and further discuss the importance of establishing IAQ standards. Citing a lack of legislated standards globally, the authors () propose numerical limits for four IAQ parameters: particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO), carbon monoxide (CO), and ventilation rate (VR). While recognizing that most of the countries do not have any mandatory IAQ standards, it is also noteworthy that IAQ regulations or guidelines exist in more than 40 countries. We like to emphasize that successful IAQ management requires recognizing, sharing, and reviewing openly available, existing regulations and guidelines, while adapting them to regional characteristics.

Lean construction (LC) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) support an integrated vision for short cycle plan-do-check-act cycles of planning and control in construction. However, operations control tasks, such as delivery of design information to the =field, monitoing, progress evaluation and error detection are still largely manual and thus time consuming, costly and error-prone. Innovations in construction technologies can be applied to reduce cycle time, waste, construction errors and the rework that necessarily follows. In this context, we propose application of a projection and scanning technology to provide workers with real-time information and feedback regarding the quality and accuracy of their handiwork. The goal is to achieve proper quality in the first iteration, with fully automated inspection, and no *** a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the system using an example of wall plastering. The result of plaster application is difficult to measure in conventional means, and errors are difficult to detect. Our system monitors the progress of the procedure(Field-to-BIM), evaluates the surface flatness and projects corrections onto the surface itself, after optimizing with respect to industry standards and tolerances (BIM-to-Field).We demonstrate the concept in an experimental setup using a Trimble™TX8 laser scanner and an angled adjustable *** results show high precision detection of wall flatness deviations, of up to 2 mm accuracy. © 2020
