Impact of marine heatwaves and cold spells on coral reef ecosystem in a tropical region: a case study of Lombok Waters, Indonesia

Coral reefs, vital marine ecosystems, are highly vulnerable to thermal stress-induced bleaching. Regional-scale bleaching events are often triggered by elevated sea surface temperature (SST) associated with global warming. While sustained temperature anomalies exceeding ± 1 °C above the long-term maximum monthly mean can induce bleaching, extreme short-term warming and cooling events, known as marine heatwaves (MHW) and marine cold spells (MCS), respectively, pose significant threats. These events, characterized by prolonged periods of anomalous temperature extremes, can have far-reaching ecological and economic consequences. This study investigated the spatial distribution of MHW and MCS in the Lombok Sea and their relationship with coral bleaching. Using daily SST data from 1998 to 2022, we identified MHW and MCS events and analyzed their frequency, intensity, and duration. Additionally, Landsat imagery (Landsat 5, 6, and 7) and field surveys conducted in 2016 were employed to assess changes in coral cover over time. Our results show that the effect of MCS and MHW cause coral bleaching, particularly in years with high frequency, intensity, and duration of these events. Extreme daily intensity (anomaly of SST > 1.5 °C) of MCS in 2000 and MHW in 1998, 2016, and 2022 led to a significant decrease in coral reef cover of approximately 30%. Furthermore, we observed that large-scale climate patterns such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can exacerbate MHW (in 1998 and 2016) conditions and contribute to coral decline. These results underscore the urgent need for effective coral reef management strategies to mitigate climate change and ocean warming impacts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Naval 2025.

This research focuses on Sanur Harbor, an inter-island ferry port located in southern Bali. The majority of visitors to Sanur Harbor are tourists who want to travel to Nusa Penida Island. At this port, facilities are available in the form of a Public Address System (PAS) and Information officers whose job is to provide information regarding the arrival and departure of ships. However, the effectiveness of this facility is limited for deaf people. Deaf people often have difficulty getting this information independently and often have to rely on manual assistance from officers. This research aims to develop software based on sign language video integration which aims to increase the accessibility of departure and arrival information at Sanur Harbor for deaf people in Bali. The software development method uses a user-centered design development approach which involves the stages of needs analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation. Sign language videos will be integrated into the software as a medium to convey important information about ship departure and arrival schedules, travel routes, pier names, fast boat names, and other important information to deaf users. Evaluation is carried out through user testing and collecting feedback from users regarding understandability, usability, and user satisfaction with the software being developed. It is hoped that the results of this research can make a positive contribution to increasing information accessibility for deaf people in Sanur Harbor and can become a basis for developing similar technology in other locations. © 2024 IEEE.

This study examined the effect of Zn2+ ion substitution on ZnxMn(1-x) Fe2O4 nanoparticles (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) towards signal Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). The co-precipitation method synthesised the nanoparticles at a temperature of 90°C. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed a polycrystalline structure with a crystallite size varied from 19.05 nm to 19.77 nm. In addition, as the Zn element increased in the ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4 nanoparticles, the degree of crystallinity increased by 21.72%, respectively. The optical properties of the nanoparticles ZnxMn(1-x) Fe2O4 indicate absorbance at wavelengths of 330.36–331.74 nm. The absorbance level increased as the Zn element decreased, resulting a direct optical gap of 3.47 eV and an indirect optical gap of 3.23 eV. The Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) curve in the SPR biosensor indicated a shift in the reflective angle of the Prism/Au/Air configuration, which is 47.78° on Prisma/Au/nanoparticle of Zn0.8Mn0.2Fe2O4/air by 50.75°, and the prism/Au/nanoparticle of Zn0.2Mn0.8Fe2 O4/air by 51.04°. The substitution of Zn ions in the compound Zn x Mn(1-x)Fe2O4 affects the resulting ATR curve. The shift in the SPR angle is caused by changes in the refractive index in each layer which is influenced by the concentration of each material which has an impact on the absorbance ability and photon reflectance. This research has the potential to continue with the testing of dielectric and magnetic properties, as well as special testing for biological analytes compatible with ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4 nanoparticles. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Equatorial currents consisting of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and Equatorial Under Current (EUC) play a significant role in the dynamics of the Indian Ocean with waters west of Sumatra. This article examines the water masses in the eastern Indian Ocean and the dynamics of the surface equatorial current at 90° BT longitude from 2° LS to 2° LU on March 1–3, 2017, as part of the Indonesia Prima 2017 expedition. NEC was detected at a depth of 5–75 m with a speed of 0–0.5 m/s to the west. EUC was detected at a depth of 75–170 m with a speed of 0.25–0.85 m/s to the east. The results of data analysis of temperature, salinity, and density indicate the intake of high-salinity water masses from the southern Indian Ocean, namely South Indian Central Water (SICW), which has a temperature range of 8.0–25.01 °C and salinity values of 34.6–35.2 PSU. SICW is carried by SEC. The movement of SEC during this study has a characteristic tendency to be asymmetrically stronger toward the north of the equator. The heat transported by the NEC is − 0.0215 PW (toward the Indian Ocean) and the EUC is 0.0347 PW (toward the west of Sumatra). There is added heat transport to the west of Sumatra by 0.0132 PW so that the thermocline layer thickens. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) curing on the compressive strength of oil shale ash (OSA) concrete as partial cement replacement was investigated. 15 cm cubes with a 30% replacement percentage were tested after seven days of conventional curing and carbonation curing at 4 bar CO2 pressure. Research results demonstrate that CO2 curing influences the compressive strength of concrete significantly. There is a linear relationship between CO2 pressure and the duration of curing, as well as the compressive strength of OSA-based concrete. A sample of ordinary Portland cement was used as the control sample. The replacement of 30% cement by OSA increased the 7-day compressive strength from 48.5 to 55.5 MPa for plain cement samples and from 36.5 to 42.3 MPa for ash-based samples. From a technical standpoint, OSA-based concrete carbonation curing is still too immature for widespread application. Nonetheless, it is continuously developing in response to greenhouse gas reduction and paving the path for a more sustainable construction materials business. © 2024, Institute of technology PETRONAS Sdn Bhd.

Phthalate as plasticizer is commonly used in plastics industries. Phthalate compounds that are commonly found in everyday life are diethyl phthalate (DEP). This compound is dangerous because it is carcinogenic, xenoestrogenic and has endocrine disrupting effects. The accumulation of plastic in landfill causes this compound to be identified in leachate range from ND- 33 mg/l. one of active landfill in Bandung shows concentration of DEP 1.277 mg/L- 2.4 mg/l. Biological treatment was investigated for DEP removal. The treatment involves the degradation of DEP using fungi isolated from leachate samples. Degradation tests were carried out at varying concentrations of 2 mg/l, 4 mg/l, 6 mg/l, 8 mg/l and 10 mg/l as a carbon source for fungi growth. Duration of analysis is 15 days or until fungi decay phase achieved. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis shows that DEP removal efficiency reached 98-99% in each concentration variation on day 9 with a specific fungal growth rate of 0.0531-0.111/day © 2024, The Authors. The impact of bottom water light exposure on electrical and sediment remediation performance of sediment microbial fuel cells

Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) generate bioelectricity from benthic sediments and thus providing both bioelectricity generation and sediment remediation. However, the high internal resistance of the cathode leads to a low power output, which requires research on cathode treatment. In this study, we explored the influence of light irradiation on bioelectricity production and nutrient removal in the SMFC system. The microcosm experiment of the SMFC system was designed with artificial illumination of 500 lux (light-SMFC) and compared with dark conditions of 15 lux (dark-SMFC), which showed that the current increases during photoperiods. The study reveals that light-illuminated SMFC consistently produced the highest voltage, with the highest voltage (553 mV) being 1.3 times higher than the dark-SMFC (440 mV). The polarization curves show a significant reduction in internal cathodic resistance under light condition, resulting in increased voltage generation. The light-SMFC exhibits the highest maximum power density of 35.93 mW/m2, surpassing the dark SMFC of 31.13 mW/m2. It was found that light illumination in the SMFC system increases oxygen availability in the cathodic region, which supports the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. At the same time, the high bioelectricity output contributes to the highest sediment remediation by greatly reducing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phosphate (PO4–P) concentrations. The study highlights the potential of light illumination in mitigating cathodic limitation to improve SMFC performance and nutrient removal. © 2024
