The purpose of this study is to know and locate the distribution of open defecation houses in East Surabaya of Surabaya City, Indonesia. Both of secondary and primary data are required for this research, the secondary data consist of the number of OD houses in East Surabaya and basic map of Surabaya City. Primary data consist of field survey OD houses of legal and illegal status. Mapping is conducted with mapping software based on geographical information system. The result of this research proves that there are 1.083 OD houses in East Surabaya and it is equally distributed throughout East Surabaya. The most OD sub-district (Kelurahan) is Gubeng with approximately 319 houses while the least is Kelurahan Tambaksari with 23 houses. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that employs the use of higher plants for the clean upt he contaminated environment, a cost-effective, environment-friendly. In this study, the role of puring(Codiaeumvarigatum) plants as a potential phytoremediator to soils contaminated with lead (Pb) was investigated. A pot experiment was conducted for four and eight weeks to compare the biomass andlead content in root, stem and leaf by puring. The plant grew well exposed Plants that grow well are exposed to Pb with as much as 250 ***-1 and 375 ***-1 soil. The result presented here showed that root, stem and leaf biomassdecrease with increasing concentration and exposure time. Pb accumulation increases with increasing concentration and time of exposure. Pb accumulation in roots> stems> leaves. Bioaccumulation of factors is less than 1 while factor translocation is more than one. Metal tolerance index values range 95.545%to103.406%. This suggests that Codiaeumvarigatum was a candidate for phytoremediation of lead. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Biocoagulants have gained attention as an alternative to chemical coagulants in water and wastewater treatment due to their ability to remove pollutant parameters such as turbidity, suspended solids, color, and organic compounds. Plant-based biocoagulants are currently the most promising due to their abundant availability and reliable performance. A proper preparation of plant-based biocoagulants is required to ensure the active compounds from the plants can be extracted. Plant raw materials are prepared into biocoagulants using drying and grinding, extraction, and purification. In mechanical preparation, drying and grinding exhibit great influence on the performance of plant-based biocoagulants due to the removal of moisture and higher contact with the carrier medium during dissolution. A smaller biocoagulant's size resulted in up to 78 % higher removal of turbidity. In chemical preparation, the oil needs to be removed before extracting the active ingredients to avoid low active compound extraction yields. The defatting of Moringa oleifera seeds showed an 18 % higher protein content. Salt and alcohol extractions were mentioned as superior extraction methods to obtain carbohydrate and protein from plant-based biocoagulants compared to water extraction, with up to a 5 % increment in turbidity removal. Preparation and pretreatment protocols have a great influence on the properties and performance of plant-based biocoagulants. Further extension of research on plant-based biocoagulants should address the problems in the initial characterization of plant material, standard pretreatment and preparation protocols, and real-scale application of plant-based biocoagulants. © 2023 The Author(s)

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) has become an endemic in major cities in Indonesia. The climate change and poor level of awareness and knowledge of the community in Indonesia have caused an increase in the DHF cases. Outbreaks on January until April 2015, the morbidity rate reached 50.75. In 1996, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicted threefold increase in the dengue hemorrhagic fever incidents in Indonesia by 2070, if the environment and community conditions do not improve. This study aims to provide a dynamic model to predict the dynamics of the DHF incidents based on climate variability in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. The design of this study was ecologic study with hypothesis test, modelling, simulation, and intervention. In collecting the data, interview with respondents and measurement of climate variables were conducted. Interviews with respondents include the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour (PSP) of the community. Measurements of climate factors include rainfall, temperature, humidity and CO2 level in the ambient environment. The DHF system dynamics model simulation shows that the significant effect on the decline of Breeding Places and the decrease of DHF cases were achieved by increasing the participation of the community to actively control water places that are potential for mosquito breeding places. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Batik industry wastewater has the characteristic of dark-colored organic waste, high temperature and pH, as well as high biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solid (TSS) content that caused by the use of chemical and coloring substances during the Batik production and coloration process. The waste processing method that can be done biologically is phytoremediation. Hydrophyte (aquatic plant) that can be used for phytoremediation on this research is Cyperus haspan. The sample taking on the research is being done by using a grab sample that can be taken at Rumah Industri Batik Blimbing, Malang. The research plan used is a completely randomized design with the factors that can be seen during the experiment. The time detention factor is on the fourth, eighth and twelfth day. The waste liquid concentration factor is K25 that can be found from mixing 25% (liquid waste): 75% (well water) and K250 that can be found by mixing 50% (liquid waste): 50% (well water), with the total volume of 6L on each tub. The waste parameter analyzed in this research is the BOD, COD, TSS, and chromium. The temperature of liquid waste during the experiment is around 260–320 °C. On the other hand, the pH on the waste liquid is around 7.9–8.9. The effective decrease in BOD and COD on K25 is 68% and 57.8% on day 8, while the decrease in BOD on K50 is 10% on day 4, and K25 and K50 have effective decrease of chromium for 44% on day 12, while TSS is increased. The increase of a few parameter contents that was studied is because the evaporation can cause the phytoremediation to become concentrated and the organic content increased, and the phytoremediation process of the waste becomes less efficient. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Increasing aquaculture cultivation produces large quantities of wastewater. If not handled properly, it can have negative impacts on the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are one of the phytoremediation methods that can be applied to treat aquaculture effluent. This research was aimed at determining the performance of Cyperus rotundus in removing COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate from the batch CW system. Treatment was carried out for 30 days with variations in the number of plants (10, 15, and 20) and variations in media height (10, 12, and 14 cm). The result showed that aquaculture effluent contains high levels of organic compounds and nutrients, and C. rotundus can grow and thrive in 100% of aquaculture effluent. Besides that, the use of C. rotundus in CWs with the effect of numbers of plants and media height showed performance of COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate with 70, 79, 90, 96, 64, 82, 92, and 48% of removal efficacy, respectively. There was no negative impact observed on C. rotundus growth after exposure to aquaculture effluent, as indicated by the increase in wet weight, dry weight, and growth rate when compared to the control. Thus, adding aquaculture effluent to CWs planted with C. rotundus supports the growth and development of plants while also performing phytoremediation. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Adsorbents derived from the bark of Inga edulis were developed for the removal of Cr(VI) ions. Chemical activation with sulfuric acid led to significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the biomass. The adsorbent materials denoted IB (inga biomass) and AIB (activated inga biomass) showed higher removal efficiencies at pH 2.0 and dosages of 1.0 and 0.25 g L−1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics could be fitted using the Elovich model, indicating that the adsorption occurred on heterogeneous surfaces. The maximum adsorption capacities were 46.0 mg g−1 for IB and 356.6 mg g−1 for AIB, with behaviors that could be described by the Langmuir (monolayer) and Freundlich (multilayer) models, respectively. XPS analyses confirmed the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), due to interactions with oxygenated functional groups. Thermodynamic evaluation indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous, with exothermic character for IB and endothermic character for AIB. Ecotoxicological assays using Daphnia similis showed that a Cr(VI) concentration of 4.34 μg L−1 caused 50.0 % immobility, while adsorption by the materials eliminated the toxicity, demonstrating the effectiveness of the adsorbents in reducing environmental impacts. Additionally, an electrode derived from the adsorption of Cr(VI) on AIB, denoted CPEAIB-Cr-ads-active, presented good performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with high current density and low overpotential. The structure of the electrode, with high surface area and the presence of pores and cavities, was favorable for electrochemical catalysis, evidencing its potential for use in applications concerning renewable energy and environmental detoxification. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

City policies and plans play an important role in promoting physical activity through changes in the urban design and transportation systems. The objectives of this study were to describe longitudinal changes in the built environment relevant to leisure-time physical activity and active travel in Sao Paulo city, Brazil, between 2015 and 2020;to describe these changes according to regions of the city, census tracts’ income, and buffer zones around the residences of participants in a cohort. Using data from public online libraries, cross-checked with the specific municipal and state secretariats, the following were measured: public squares, parks, sports facilities, community clubs, outdoor gyms, bike paths, train or subway stations, bus terminals, and primary health care units. To quantify these attributes around the residences, four different buffers: 500 m and 1000 m radial buffers and 500 m and 1000 m network buffers were adopted. An increase was observed in outdoor gyms (+109.6%), bike paths (+67.7%), train or subway stations, bus terminals (+15.4%), sports facilities (+12.0%), and public squares (+8.7%). However, the changes differed according to the region, census tract income, and residential area. The results can serve to foster a discussion on the effects of local policies being executed. In addition, this study highlights important disparities in cities through the different levels evaluated. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This study presents a new method for assessing bacterial leaf blight (BLB) in paddy fields using multispectral UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) data through patch fragmentation analysis. Unlike traditional pixel-based methods, which often fail to capture the spatial context, our approach treats pixels as objects and analyzes their spatial relationships to evaluate BLB severity. We used six patch fragmentation metrics derived from binarized vegetation indices to classify BLB damage scores using a random forest algorithm. This method achieves high accuracy (AUC of 0.938) with a 0.5-meter sampling window, offering a more detailed assessment than conventional pixel-based analysis. This study highlights the benefits of incorporating the spatial context and improving BLB monitoring and management. This innovative approach allows agricultural stakeholders to gain valuable insights into the extent and severity of BLB disease infestation, enabling targeted intervention strategies for disease management and mitigation. © 2024, The Authors. This study presents an investigation of chemical and physical characterization, green process analysis, techno-economic considerations, and carbon emissions for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from plastic and can waste using microwave-assisted synthesis. The microwave-assisted synthesis proves to be more cost-effective, with a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The synthesized material (MIL-Mw-U) demonstrates excellent performance in methylene blue (MB) removal, achieving 98.41% removal, with 97.87% removal although the catalyst is used in the third cycle. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto MIL-Mw-U achieved a maximum capacity of 295.26 mgg⁻¹ at pH 3 and decreased to 258.68 mgg⁻¹ at pH 11 due to OH⁻ competition. The Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9381) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.999) confirmed monolayer chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. This innovative approach supports circular economy principles by converting can and plastic bottle waste into functional material for dye removal, offering sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. © 2025 The Authors
