The modified DAC version with thermal quadrupoles can be considered an interesting alternative to thermal contrast computations since it provides an automated tool for depth retrieval and eliminates the need of selecting a non-defective area. In practice it is important to have heat stimulus with complex shapes and long durations (several seconds) in order to cover larger inspection areas, enhance thermal contrast between defective and sound areas and increase the depth of inspection inside the material. In this work we present a heat stimulus correction by using the thermal quadrupoles theory and its validation with several heat stimulus shapes and durations. © 2009 SPIE.

In this paper, we use EEG signals to classify two emotions-happiness and sadness. These emotions are evoked by showing subjects pictures of smile and cry facial expressions. We propose a frequency band searching method to choose an optimal band into which the recorded EEG signal is filtered. We use common spatial patterns (CSP) and linear-SVM to classify these two emotions. To investigate the time resolution of classification, we explore two kinds of trials with lengths of 3s and 1s. Classification accuracies of 93.5% plusmn 6.7% and 93.0%plusmn6.2% are achieved on 10 subjects for 3s-trials and 1s-trials, respectively. Our experimental results indicate that the gamma band (roughly 30-100 Hz) is suitable for EEG-based emotion classification.

Cloud resource providers in a market face dynamic and unpredictable consumer behavior. The way, how prices are set in a dynamic environment, can influence the demand behavior of price sensitive customers. A cloud resource provider has to decide on how to allocate his scarce resources in order to maximize his profit. The application of bid price control for evaluating incoming service requests is a common approach for capacity control in network revenue management. In this paper we introduce a customized version of the concept of self-adjusting bid prices and apply it to the area of cloud computing. Furthermore, we perform a simulation in order to test the efficiency of the proposed model.

Scientific applications like neuroscience data analysis are usually compute and data-intensive. With the use of globally distributed resources and suitable middlewares, we can achieve much shorter execution time, distribute compute and storage load, and add greater flexibility to the execution of these scientific applications than we could ever achieve in a single compute *** this paper, we present the processing of image registration (IR) for functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) studies on global grids. We characterize the application, list its requirements and transform it to a workflow. We then execute the application on Gridpsila5000 platform and present extensive performance results. We show that the IR application can have 1) significantly improved makespan, 2) distribution of compute and storage load among resources used, and 3) flexibility when executing multiple times on global Grids.

The CHANGE-MAKING problem is to represent a given value with the fewest coins under a given coin system. As a variation of the knapsack problem, it is known to be NP-hard. Nevertheless, in most real money systems, the greedy algorithm yields optimal solutions. In this paper, we study what type of coin systems that guarantee the optimality of the greedy algorithm. We provide new proofs for a suf cient and necessary condition for the so-called canonical coin systems with 4 or 5 types of coins, and a suf cient condition for non-canonical coin systems, respectively. Moreover, we propose an O(m2) algorithm that decides whether a tight coin system is canonical.

In this paper, a discriminative representation method of head images is proposed, which is based on parts and poses for identity-independent head pose estimation. Head images are preprocessed to enhance the facial features and eliminate the identity information by skin color model and Laplacian of Gaussian transform. Then, the preprocessed images are used to construct a eigenpose subspace by a matrix factorization method. The testing head images are represented as the projections of the eigenpose subspace in which we can easily find the decision function for head pose estimation. The proposed representation method evaluated on the standard head pose database and real-time videos achieves higher pose estimation accuracy than other methods.

Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of computer science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems, Experimental Design for Real- World systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. Distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios.
