This paper presents a grid portal for protein secondary structure prediction developed by using services of Aneka, a .NET-based enterprise grid technology. The portal is used by research scientists to discover new prediction structures in a parallel manner. An SVM (support vector machine)-based prediction algorithm is used with 64 sample protein sequences as a case study to demonstrate the potential of enterprise grids.

In novel market-oriented resource sharing models, resource consumers pay for the resource usage and expect that non-functional requirements for the application execution, termed as quality of service (QoS), are satisfied. QoS is negotiated between two parties following the specific negotiation protocols and is recorded using service level agreements (SLAs). However, most of the existing work assumes that the communication partners know about the SLA negotiation protocols and about the SLA templates before entering the negotiation. However, this is a contradictory assumption, if we consider computational grids and novel, commercially oriented computing clouds where consumers and providers meet each other dynamically. In this paper, we present novel meta-negotiation and SLA-mapping solutions for grid workflows bridging the gap between current QoS models and grid workflows, one of the most successful grid programming paradigms. We illustrate the open research issues with a real world case study. Thereafter, we present document models for the specification of meta-negotiations and SLA-mappings. We discuss the architecture for the management of meta-negotiations and SLA-mappings as well as integration of the architecture into a grid workflow management framework.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders are rarely apparent during the neonatal period, and if they are not treated early, irreversible damage, such as mental retardation, or even death, may occur. Therefore, the practice of newborn screening is important to the prevention of permanent disabilities in newborns. In this paper, we propose a newborn screening system that uses Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate raw data on the concentrations of metabolic substances obtained from tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to determine if a newborn has a metabolic disorder. As per the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we designed the system using web services techniques, which are suitable for integrating heterogeneous platforms, protocols, and applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information systems (HIS) or other related HIS. © 2008 IEEE.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders during neonatal periods are often not apparent. If not treated earlier, irreversible damages such as mental retardation or even death may occur. Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information systems later.

This paper studies video multicasting in large scale areas using wireless mesh networks. The focus is on the use of Internet access gateways that allow a choice of alternative routes to avoid potentially lengthy multi-hop wireless paths with low capacity. A set of heuristic-based algorithms are described that together aim to maximize network capacity: the two-tier integrated architecture algorithm, the weighted gateway uploading algorithm, the link-controlled routing tree algorithm, and the alternative channel assignment algorithm. These algorithms use different approaches to arrange multicast group members into a clustered and two-tier integrated architecture in which network protocols can make use of multiple gateways to improve system throughput. Simulation results are used to determine the performance of the different approaches.

A Grid based e-Research platform is being developed for providing a simulation-based virtual reality environment for clinical management and therapy treatment. The development of this platform involves cross-disciplinary experts aiming at combining the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into clinical management system. These fluid dynamic studies support the physician and surgeon with recommendations for the possible range of treatment and operation techniques. The platform will consist of a cluster of computing nodes, a middleware (Grid management layer), internet accessible tomography data and CFD analysis tools, and a tailored graphical user interface (GUI) application for various experts. In future, this platform will provide the novel creation of a prototype virtual reality model environment that links each technical modular consisting of a consolidation system with flexible interface model for exchanging data efficiently. Furthermore, besides allowing expeditious sharing of data and analytical tools, it will also furnish a foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration and will definitely foster further advancement of related biomechanics researches. © 2007, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives. © 2007 IEEE.

Service-Oriented Architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such Service-Oriented Architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self-adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SLAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modem technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.
