Service-oriented architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such service-oriented architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self- adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SIAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container. Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modern technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional Web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

In this work we present a comparative study, testing selected methods for clustering and classification of holter electrocardiogram (ECG). More specifically we focus on the task of discriminating between normal 'N' beats and premature ventricular 'V' beats. Some of the tested methods represent the state of the art in pattern analysis, while others are novel algorithms developed by us. All the algorithms were tested on the same datasets, namely the MIT-BIH and the AHA databases. The results for all the employed methods are compared and evaluated using the measures of sensitivity and specificity.

Game environments provide a good domain for serious simulations such as those used in training Navy conning officers. Currently, a typical training scenario requires multiple personnel to play each of the boats and thus is expensive. We propose an approach to addressing this issue by developing intelligent, autonomous controllers for each boat. Significant challenges toward achieving these goals are the realism of behavior exhibited by the automated boats and their real-time response to change. In this paper we describe a control architecture that enables the real-time response of boats and the repertoire of realistic behaviors we developed for this application. We demonstrate the capabilities of our system with experimental results.

With the emergence of aspect-oriented (AO) techniques, crosscutting concerns can be now explicitly modularized and exposed as additional variabilities in program families Hence, the development of highly customizable software family architectures requires the explicit handling of crosscutting variabilities through domain engineering and application engineering steps In this context, this paper presents a generative model that addresses the implementation and instantiation of variabilities encountered in AO software family architectures The use of our model allows for an early specification and preparation of AO variabilities, which in turn can be explicitly customized by means of domain engineering activities All the variabilities of the architecture are modeled using feature models In application engineering, developers can request an instance of the AO architecture in a process of two stages: (i) the definition of a feature model instance which specifies the resolution of variabilities for the AO family architecture;and (ii) the definition of a set of crosscutting relationships between features.

We investigate the use of genetic algorithms to play real-time computer strategy games. To overcome the knowledge acquisition bottleneck found in using traditional expert systems, scripts, or decision trees we use genetic algorithms to evolve game players. The spatial decision makers in our game players use influence maps as a basic building block from which they construct and evolve trees containing complex game playing strategies. Information from influence map trees is combined with that from an A* pathfinder, and used by another genetic algorithm to solve the allocation problems present within many game decisions. As a first step towards evolving strategic players we develop this system in the context of a tactical game. Results show the co-evolution of coordinated attacking and defending strategies superior to their hand-coded counterparts

We propose and experiment a Social Networking Service (SNS) for local communities for tsunami disaster control. It is an easy-to-use GIS-based system with powerful GIS analysis capabilities. One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation. The system architecture and the use of the system for tsunami disaster control are discussed. We report ongoing developments in Hachinohe-City, Japan.
