How Transparency Shapes the Quality of Human-Robot Interaction: An Examination of Trust, Perception, and Workload

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly employed in robots and makes interaction with robots more intricate, humans’ need for transparency becomes predominant;however, current research demonstrates debates regarding the form, degree, and implementation of transparency. The industrial and military robotics sectors highlighted the positive role of transparency in improving user experiences. In contrast, medical and service robotics usually discussed the negative impact of transparency in diminishing users’ evaluations of robots and escalating their cognitive workloads. The proposed meta-analysis, drawing from 644 publications and distilling 25 studies, sought to comprehensively comprehend the role of transparency in robotics, specifically, its impact on user trust, perception, and workload. These findings suggest that excessive transparency may undermine the trust in humanoid service robots. Subtle variations in the experimental design and nature of online platforms could influence the outcomes. The focus lies on methodological recommendations, improving existing transparency models to enable customization of transparency levels based on the practical application contexts of robots. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2025.

Fair allocation of indivisible items among agents with budget constraints has received considerable attention recently. In this model, each agent has a budget, and each item has a specific size and homogeneous or heterogeneous valuations for all the agents. In a fair allocation, each agent receives a bundle of items with total size no more than her budget, meanwhile the EF1 (envy-freeness up to one item) fairness holds between any agents. To avoid a trivial and meaningless solution in which all bundles are empty, we invoke the well-studied concept PoF (price of fairness), the worst-case ratio between the maximum total valuation without and with the fairness guarantee to capture the efficiency loss induced by fairness. In this paper, the PoFs are extensively studied in various settings. We first investigate an algorithm outputting an EF1 allocation with the total valuation at least 12n of the maximum total valuation (without EF1 requirement), where n is the number of agents. It implies that PoF is at most 2n. Meanwhile, we give an instance to show that PoF is at least n-ϵ. Then a special case that the valuation of an item is identical for all the agents is considered. We establish an algorithm which outputs an EF1 allocation with the total valuation at least 12 of the maximum total valuation. That is to say, an algorithm with PoF of 2 is devised. And we give a lower bound of 2-1n. Finally, the scenario of two agents is discussed. An algorithm with PoF of 32 is constructed when all the agents have identical valuation for an item. Environmental information perception enhances cooperation in stochastic public goods games via Q-learning

Cooperation is the foundation of social progress, but due to rational individuals often prioritize personal interests, reciprocal cooperation is undermined. The Public Goods Game (PGG) is a classic model for studying group interactions. Traditional PGG assumes a static environment, but in reality, the environment is dynamically changing, and there is an interaction between individual behavior and the environment. Therefore, the stochastic game framework is proposed and applied to study the feedback mechanisms between behavior and the environment. This paper takes the two-state environmental transition mechanism as an example to explore the impact of environmental information perception ability on individual decision-making in the stochastic PGG. Specifically, we use the Q-learning algorithm to depict individual decision-making behavior and consider two types of individuals with different perception abilities: individuals with environmental perception ability select the best action based on the current environmental state, while individuals without environmental perception ability make decisions based solely on historical experience. The experimental results show that environmental information perception significantly lowers the cooperation threshold in the stochastic PGG. By analyzing the microscopic interaction modes of individuals, we find that there is an isolation zone effect between different strategy populations, which effectively prevents the erosion of defection behaviors and ensures the internal stability of cooperation. The extended experiments further validate the robustness of the results. This study shows that environmental information is beneficial for promoting the evolution of cooperation. These findings provide new insights into the cooperation mechanisms in stochastic PGG and offer valuable guidance for promoting cooperation in real-world societies. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

The rapid advancement of science has underscored the importance of collaboration among scientists. While many studies have explored the structure of collaboration networks, there is a lack of comprehensive quantitative research on the temporal patterns of these collaborations. This study addresses this gap by analyzing temporal scientific collaboration networks in physics, spanning from 1960 to 2021, using complex network theories and methods. By constructing five-year temporal collaborative networks and employing metrics such as network diameter, shortest path, and clustering coefficient, this research reveals an increase in connectivity and small-world characteristics over time. Additionally, community detection highlights a shift towards specialized collaboration patterns and increased cross-community interactions. The study also uncovers growing centrality and social stratification within the research system, with the "rich club" phenomenon indicating strong and dynamic collaborations among highly connected scientists. Temporal analysis shows that while ultra-high connectivity scientists engage in fluctuating relationships, medium-high connectivity scientists maintain more stable collaborations. These findings provide insights into the evolution of collaborative behaviors and inform science policy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

With the continuous development of science and technology, the degree of information in today's world is deepening, and the value of data information is becoming more and more important. At the same time, with the advancement of economic globalization, more and more users or business needs go beyond the traditional organizational boundaries, requiring multiple organizations to cooperate, and cross-organizational business management comes into being. Under the scenario of cross-organizational cooperation, protecting the business and data privacy of each organization has become a challenging task. Federated learning, as a new technology in the field of artificial intelligence, deals with both "data islands"and privacy protection. It can combine scattered data for training while maintaining the data privacy of each participating organization, and to a great extent, it protects sensitive data that needs to be fused. It has gradually become an effective means to solve the data and business privacy in cross-organizational business processes. This paper will combine federated learning to propose a cross-organizational privacy protection method based on federated learning to realize the privacy protection in cross-organizational business processes, and discuss the current challenges and future development direction to promote the further development of cross-organizational privacy protection methods. © 2023 ACM.

Process predictive monitoring refers to prediction the future activities, execution time, resources and other attribute in the ongoing business process. Aiming at the problem that the data scale of a single enterprise or organization is limited in business process, the learning model is difficult to further improve the prediction ability. This paper proposes a novel process predictive monitoring architecture proposal based on federated learning, and applies federated learning in process predictive monitoring to avoid the original data transmission and protect the privacy of data. Through aggregation training, the diversity of data is increased and the generalization ability and prediction performance of the model are improved. © 2023 ACM.

The utilization of surgical telementoring has become increasingly prevalent in enhancing the surgical standards of grassroots hospitals in contemporary times. In the traditional framework of surgical telementoring, remote doctors guide grassroots doctors via video and audio communication, which may encounter obstacles such as inadequate information transfer and challenges in accurately pinpointing the surgical site and path. To mitigate these issues, this study introduces an intelligent surgical telementoring system based on edge computing. This system enables the transmission of points marked by remote doctors to grassroots doctors, updating these points’ coordinates in real-time on the local endoscopic video. In this system, a novel method named P2PTracking (Patch-to-Pixel Point Tracking) is implemented. This process begins with the tracking of a square patch surrounding the point marked by the remote doctor using SiameseFC. Following this, feature matching is performed on the tracked patch in the current frame and the square patch in the labelled frame or template frame. The affine transformation is then calculated based on the feature matching results. Lastly, the point tracking result is derived using the computed affine transformation. experimental results indicate that the proposed system has a transmission speed of 1.99M/s and a transmission latency of 171 ms when transmitting video at a resolution of 1920 × 1080px, while the proposed method can achieve an accuracy of 96.6 % when the pixel error is 4. To solve the problem of volunteer dispatch during the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)epidemic,a many-to-many two-sided matching volunteer dispatch method based on an improved predator-search algorithm is ***,different evaluation index sets for volunteers and rescue tasks were developed,and weightings were determined using the analytic hierarchy ***,the actual and expected values of the different indicators of the two parties were determined,and the triangular fuzzy number was used to calculate the satis-faction of the two *** on this number,we used a linear weighting method to calculate the combined satisfaction and build a many-to-many two-sided matching model according to the demands of both ***-sequently,an improved predator-search algorithm was used to solve the ***,taking the recruitment of volunteers for pneumonia epidemic prevention and control in Chun’an County as an example,the method proposed in our study was verified.A comparison and analysis of the results further demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of this method.

In this paper, we use support vector regression (SVR) to estimate the parameters of the SETAR model for predicting the log-return of stock price data. SETAR model is usually estimated using maximum likelihood (ML) and minimize conditional sum-of-squares (CSS), assuming that the data are normal distribution. SVR is a powerful tool for regression estimation. Therefore, this paper proposes to use SVR instead of maximum likelihood and conditional least squares to estimate the parameters of the SETAR model. Empirical analysis on the two stock price data of China Unicom and ICBC, the results show that on the data of China Unicom, the prediction error of the Gaussian kernel SVR-SETAR model is 8% lower than that of the ML-SETAR model and the CSS-SETAR model. And on ICBC data, the prediction error of the Gaussian kernel SVR-SETAR model is 26.32% and 20% lower than that of the ML-SETAR model and CSS-SETAR model, respectively. This suggests that SVR can be used to estimate the parameters of the SESAT model and the SVR-SETAR model has higher predictive power. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
