In recent years, object detection technology has developed rapidly and is widely used in the field of intelligent video monitoring, especially in the classroom scenes, where incorporating the intelligent object detection technique into the video monitoring systems for intelligent monitoring purpose has important practical significance. However, surveillance videos may encounter issues such as object occlusion, motion blur, posture changes, and video defocus, which poses great challenges to object detection in the surveillance video scenarios. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct in-depth research on human detection in classroom multi camera surveillance video scenes and propose a multi frame feature fusion network based on the attention mechanism. The algorithm first adds the dilated convolution layers to the ResNet50 backbone network to expand the receptive field and retain more feature information; Secondly, a multi frame feature fusion strategy based on the attention mechanism was proposed to enhance the feature representation ability of the deep detector by fusing the feature information of adjacent frames, thereby improving the accuracy of human detection in the classroom monitoring video. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have compiled and produced a large-scale classroom monitoring video dataset, named OUC-ClassVideo. The proposed object detection network, which is developed based on the attention mechanism and multi frame feature fusion strategy, has achieved satisfactory performance on both the public dataset ImageNet VID and the OUC-ClassVideo dataset collected by ourselves.

Cutting force is a key factor in machining processes. Cutting force similarity is required for several important issues, namely: stability evaluation, process control, and process parameter setting. This study employed a long short-term memory (LSTM) with Siamese architecture to measure the similarity of the cutting forces in a milling process. The Siamese LSTM was trained with time series data of the vertical cutting force collected from a cutting tool during the milling process to calculate the similarity. For evaluation, dynamic time warping (DTW), a common approach used to calculate the similarity of time series data, was employed for comparison with the Siamese LSTM. experimental results showed that the proposed Siamese LSTM outperformed the conventional DTW-based similarity calculation.

Privacy engineering, as an emerging field of research and practice, comprises the technical capabilities and management processes needed to implement, deploy, and operate privacy features and controls in working systems. For that, software practitioners and other stakeholders in software companies need to work cooperatively toward building privacy-preserving businesses and engineering solutions. Significant research has been done to understand the software practitioners’ perceptions of information privacy, but more emphasis should be given to the uptake of concrete privacy engineering components. This research delves into the software practitioners’ perspectives and mindset, organisational aspects, and current practices on privacy and its engineering processes. A total of 30 practitioners from nine countries and backgrounds were interviewed, sharing their experiences and voicing their opinions on a broad range of privacy topics. The thematic analysis methodology was adopted to code the interview data qualitatively and construct a rich and nuanced thematic framework. As a result, we identified three critical interconnected themes that compose our thematic framework for privacy engineering "in the wild": (1) personal privacy mindset and stance, categorised into practitioners’ privacy knowledge, attitudes and behaviours;(2) organisational privacy aspects, such as decision-power and positive and negative examples of privacy climate;and, (3) privacy engineering practices, such as procedures and controls concretely used in the industry. Among the main findings, this study provides many insights about the state-of-the-practice of privacy engineering, pointing to a positive influence of privacy laws (e.g., EU General Data Protection Regulation) on practitioners’ behaviours and organisations’ cultures. The increasing amount of traffic being aggregated to the terrestrial backbone optical networks (BONs) from the metro/access communication networks has caused capacity crunch in the BONs. Increasing coverage with rural and remote connectivity, wireless network densification, data hungry 5G applications, and increasing datacenters (DCs) are among the major factors that necessitated the deployment of huge amount of optical fibers around the world to connect cell sites, to interconnect DCs, to provide fiber to the home (FTTH) services, among others. Due to massive fiberization in the metro/access networks and hence to handle the increased traffic being aggregated to BONs through them, efforts are being made to increase the capacity of BONs via novel devices, fiber designs, and spectral/spatial flexibility and expansion along with the additional deployment of fibers (referred to as fiber densification) in BONs. In this paper, we focus on the topological aspect of BON and present BON densification as an approach to enable the realization of several advanced optical network technologies in BONs. We analyze the advantages of BON densification considering multicore fibers (MCFs) for which low transmission reach has been the main hindrance towards its deployment in BONs. Simulations indicate that through BON densification, MCF networks can achieve significantly low blocking, and high resiliency against multi-link failures. Furthermore, we highlight several other aspects of future communication networks which indicate that BON densification is a promising approach as compared to the conventional fiber densification.

Advances in intensive care have improved the survival rate of patients with severe acute brain injury, but diagnostic errors for patients with disorders of consciousness are still high. Accurate diagnosis of these patients is very important because effective treatment can vary depending on the diagnosis. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, focusing on awareness. In particular, power spectral density and common spatial patterns were used together, considering that spatial information is a key feature in consciousness. The 16 patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and 14 with minimally conscious state underwent resting-state electroencephalography measurements. In addition, we compared the performance by utilizing each frequency (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma bands) related to consciousness. As a result, the highest accuracy of 95.06% was achieved by the EEGNet classifier, especially in the beta frequency band. We demonstrated that spatial information is very important in consciousness, as we observed that classification performance improved when common spatial patterns were used. These results provide insight into various frameworks for diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness and may help patients survive by increasing the diagnosis rate in the future. © 2025 IEEE.

As software security threats continue to evolve, the demand for innovative ways of securing coding has tremendously grown. The integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into software development holds significant potential for improving secure coding practices. This paper aims at systematically studying the impact of GenAI in enhancing secure coding practices from improving software security, setting forth its potential benefits, challenges, and implications. To outline the contribution of AI driven code generation tools, we analyze via a structured review of recent literature, application to the industry, and empirical studies on how these tools help to mitigate security risks, comply with the secure coding standards, and make software development efficient. We hope that our findings will benefit researchers, software engineers and cybersecurity professionals alike in integrating GenAI into a secure development workflow without losing the advantages GenAI provides. Finally, the state of the art advances and future directions of AI assisted in secure software engineering discussed in this study can contribute to the ongoing discourse on AI assisted in secure software engineering. © 2025, CC BY.

The exponential growth of sensitive patient information and diagnostic records in digital healthcare systems has increased the complexity of data protection, while frequent medical data breaches severely compromise system security and reliability. Existing privacy protection techniques often lack robustness and real-time capabilities in high-noise, high-packet-loss, and dynamic network environments, limiting their effectiveness in detecting healthcare data leaks. To address these challenges, we propose a Swarm Intelligence-Based Network Watermarking (SIBW) method for real-time privacy data leakage detection in digital healthcare systems. SIBW integrates fountain codes with outer error correction codes and employs a Multi-Phase Synergistic Swarm Optimization Algorithm (MPSSOA) to dynamically optimize encoding parameters, significantly enhancing the robustness and interference resistance of watermark detection. Additionally, a reliable synchronization sequence and lightweight embedding mechanism are designed to ensure adaptability to complex, dynamic networks. experimental results demonstrate that SIBW achieves over 90% detection accuracy under high latency jitter and packet loss conditions, surpassing existing methods in both robustness and efficiency. With a compact design of only 3.7 MB, SIBW is particularly suited for rapid deployment in resource-constrained digital healthcare systems. © 2013 IEEE All rights reserved.

An analysis of machine learning algorithms in rotating machines maintenance

The industrial maintenance activities represent an increase in production costs, mainly caused by unnecessary production stops. Recent technologies approaches are handling the continuous monitoring of industrial machines, storing sensors data, and also maintenance history. More data analysis is necessary specifically for rotating machines presenting methodologies to reduce the maintenance. In order to handle this problem, a comparative analysis of machine learning methods is presented. The strategy aims to predict failures and then indicates the maintenance necessity before a break occurs. Thus, it is applied and analyzed the specific machine learning algorithms, Gradient Boosting and Random Forest, using a dataset of rotation machines. The results show that both methods have an excellent performance (metrics accuracy, precision, and recall), with slightly better results in Gradient Boosting (hit rate of 99.93%) indicating the prominent application of these algorithms in this industrial scenario.

Spatial computing is a technological advancement that facilitates the seamless integration of devices into the physical environment, resulting in a more natural and intuitive digital world user experience. Spatial computing has the potential to become a significant advancement in the field of computing. From GPS and location-based services to healthcare, spatial computing technologies have influenced and improved our interactions with the digital world. The use of spatial computing in creating interactive digital environments has become increasingly popular and effective. This is explained by its increasing significance among researchers and industrial organisations, which motivated us to conduct this review. This review provides a detailed overview of spatial computing, including its enabling technologies and its impact on various applications. Projects related to spatial computing are also discussed. In this review, we also explored the potential challenges and limitations of spatial computing. Furthermore, we discuss potential solutions and future directions. Machine Learning (ML) models trained on biased data can reproduce and even amplify these biases. Since such models are deployed to make decisions that can affect people's lives, ensuring their fairness is critical. One approach to mitigate possible unfairness of ML models is to map the input data into a less-biased new space by means of training the model on fair representations. Several methods based on adversarial learning have been proposed to learn fair representation by fooling an adversary in predicting the sensitive attribute (e.g., gender or race). However, adversarial-based learning can be too difficult to optimize in practice; besides, it penalizes the utility of the representation. Hence, in this research effort we train bias-free representations from the input data by inducing a uniform distribution over the sensitive attributes in the latent space. In particular, we propose a probabilistic framework that learns these representations by enforcing the correct reconstruction of the original data, plus the prediction of the attributes of interest while eliminating the possibility of predicting the sensitive ones. Our method leverages the inability of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to generalize when trained on a noisy label space to regularize the latent space. We use a network head that predicts a noisy version of the sensitive attributes in order to increase the uncertainty of their predictions at test time. Our experiments in two datasets demonstrated that the proposed model significantly improves fairness while maintaining the prediction accuracy of downstream tasks.
