Reliable extraction of buildings from InSAR images is made tricky by the many disturbance factors that affect the measurement process, especially in urban areas where the proximity of many different buildings aggravates the problem of multiple reflections. In this paper we propose and discuss two different approaches to segmentation for building extraction.
Structural approaches of patternrecognition are frequently proposed for man-made objects in aerial images. Especially model based methods are considered using geometric, topologic and structural knowledge by means of...

A syntax-oriented method for a map-aided analysis of structures in aerial images is proposed. First the map must be analysed in order to obtain a suitable representation of its knowledge content. A special kind of graph, a so-called image-description graph, is the result of this map analysis. The knowledge of the map, represented on different description levels, is used to control the search process during the image analysis. Based on this knowledge, expectations for attribute values of image objects are defined. Generated objects are assessed relative to the expectations of the map and the object model. A set-oriented selection method is applied to deduce the processing priority using these two assessments. Expected objects are preferably processed for building up more complex objects. Thus the map-aided analysis can be used to reduce the processing time for a verification task.

This paper describes an approach for image sequence processing, which extracts objects (or parts of objects) from the image sequence, generates motion-specifically attributed tracks (location/time course) and derives a hierarchy of motion. The base consists of object-characterizing segments which are determined by a multiple threshold method. This method yields feature descriptions for each segment. Based on this description, an association of the segments from frame to frame is done. The resulting motion vectors are concatenated as long as the features of the segments and the motion-specific attributes do not change significantly. In a subsequent step the analysis of motion-specific interrelations between the tracks is executed. The event recognition is processed and controlled by event models. In conformity with motion concepts the hypotheses of events are initialized by motion dependent changes of the tracks.< >

To provide for the realization of machine-independent image-processing systems which support problem-oriented procedure description and development as well as the generation of reusable software, an iconic kernel system (IKS) was developed. The IKS provides a description foundation for iconic processing and serves as a concrete organizational framework for implementation and application of image-processing tasks. This is achieved using a uniform and comprehensive fundamental operation model for iconic operations and an object-oriented approach for system architecture.< >

An essential step towards the automatic generation of digital maps is the automatic extraction of cartographic features such as roads, highways, railways, rivers, waterways, forest areas, etc. from maps. Several methods have been developed to solve this task. By the analysis of the map legend, the actual parameter values describing the relevant cartographic features can be found automatically. The extraction procedures have been implemented and tested successfully by application to different map master folios. The extraction process has been supported and improved substantially by a simultaneous processing of the map and an aerial image of the same area.
