Modern space borne SAR sensors provide geometric resolution of one meter, airborne systems even higher. In data of this kind many features of urban objects become visible, which were beyond the scope of radar remote sensing only a few years ago. However, layover and occlusion issues inevitably arise in undulated terrain and urban areas because of the side-looking SAR sensor principle. In order to support interpretation, SAR data are often analyzed using additional complementary information provided by maps or other remote sensing imagery. An existing facility for data acquisition in aerial surveys is presented. It contains a laser radar, an infrared camera and a video camera. The system supports synchronisation of sensor data, even when the sensor does not inherently offer that feature. This allows data from different sensors to be merged and processed together. The necessary temporal referencing is achieved by specialised hardware implemented in a Field Programmable Gate Array, which also serves to acquire data from the IR camera. The usefulness of FPGAs for this purpose is demonstrated. The possibilities FPGAs offer are shown up, and future extensions of the system are presented.

The demand for the prevention of collateral damages in military operations requires methods of robust automatic identification of targets like vehicles especially during target approach. This requires the development of sophisticated techniques for automatic and semi-automatic interpretation of sensor data. In particular, the pre-analysis of reconnaissance data is important for the human observers as well as for autonomous systems. A concept of generating a precise and up-to-date 3D model of a target will be proposed. The model is created from near-term laser range and infrared data gathered by reconnaissance in advance. It consists of the visible part of the object surface textured with measured infrared values. The model is evaluated by generating 2D templates for a correlation-based tracking system in an infrared image sequence of a complex scenario.

Our algorithm for camera self-calibration makes extensive use of the constant focal length. Furthermore, a fast dense reconstruction can be performed by fusion of tessellations obtained from different sub-sequences (LIFT). Moreover, we will present our system for performing the reconstruction in a projective coordinate system. A useful enrichment of videos captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is the annotation of image data or determining coordinates for objects in the video. This requires georeferencing of the video frames. For surveillance or reconnaissance applications, we propose georeferencing of UAV video frames with an orthophoto. In this process, the challenge is to register temporally different images from different sensors that capture objects with quite different visual appearances. After an initial registration of the first video frame to the orthophoto, the subsequent frames are registered by image mosaicking. Whenever necessary, the mosaic is anchored by registration to the orthophoto. We explain the image-based registration approach and discuss its potential real-time processing capability. Internal performance evaluation and GPS/INS support is considered. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated with real data sets captured by UAVs for georeferencing, video frame annotation, and motion detection.
