Recently, non-Lambertian models for perspective shape from shading (PSFS) have received attention in the literature. The Phong-based PSFS model combining Lambertian and specular reflection has been shown to give good results for objects in real-world images. In this paper, we present at hand of this model the first analysis of a non-Lambertian PSFS model in the literature. We show mathematically and experimentally how crucial the specular part of the model is for the reconstruction. Moreover, we give a detailed analysis of the Hamiltonian defining the model. While the non-Lambertian reflectance is generally assumed to lead to numerical difficulties, this investigation shows that an efficient fast marching scheme can be applied successfully without losing depth information. Our work represents a first step towards the thorough understanding of non-Lambertian PSFS models.

The creation of simulative conceptual models for information systems (IS) development is time consuming because of the detailed specifications needed. Simulation (and animation) capabilities should therefore be supported directly by the languages and tools used for conceptual modelling anyway. At the same time, problem domains are becoming more and more complex with several groups of stakeholders participating in the modelling and simulation process. This places stronger requirements on the models and languages used in terms of intuitiveness and view integration. The paper outlines an integrated framework for simulative conceptual models, based on re-interpreted dataflow diagrams (DPD) and entity-relationship (E-R) models in order to reduce the additional effort of simulation. The framework shifts modelling focus from representation of informational abstractions of the phenomena in the real-world problem domain to the phenomena themselves through fac.t modelling. In this way, multiple stakeholders' views can be represented simultaneously, while more concrete representations of the problem domain may make simulation results more understandable for non-experts.

Our perception of cold enriches our understanding of the world and allows us to interact with it. Therefore, the presentation of cold sensations will be beneficial in improving the sense of immersion and presence in virtual reality and the metaverse. This study proposed a novel method for spatially continuous cold sensation presentation based on low-temperature airflows. We defined the shortest distance between two airflows perceived as different cold stimuli as a local cold stimulus group discrimination threshold (LCSGDT). By setting the distance between airflows within the LCSGDT, spatially continuous cold sensations can be achieved with an optimal number of cold airflows. We hypothesized that the LCSGDTs are related to the heat-transfer capability of airflows and developed a model to relate them. We investigated the LCSGDTs at a flow rate of 25 L/min and presentation distances ranging from 10 to 50 mm. The results showed that under these conditions, the LCSGDTs are 131.4 ± 1.9 mm, and the heat-transfer capacity of the airflow corresponding to these LCSGDTs is an almost constant value, that is, 0.92.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) can be described as instructional networks with individual routes for the students. The purpose of this paper is to formulate optimal rules for deciding on such routes in ITSs using achievement tests administered to the students and information about their previous history in the system. As an example, three types of elementary test-based decisions (viz. selection, placement and mastery decisions) are combined into an instructional network of an ITS. By simultaneous optimisation of the decisions in this network, rules for guiding the progress of students through ITSs can be designed. The framework for the approach is derived from Bayesian decision theory. Results from an empirical example of instructional decision making in medicine will be presented to illustrate the differences between a simultaneous and a separate approach.

A message protocol called message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) is being used in large-scale energy-efficient communications. However, even when using MQTT, if the network quality and capacity are insufficient, especially when there are many subscribers, nodes may fail to receive messages. Therefore, we propose a new communication control mechanism, eXchanging attributes of transmission uniformity (Xatu). The goal of Xatu is to establish a reliable new method that can compensate for message loss even in long-time and large-scale environments. Xatu sets up a state called bridge, and a conventional MQTT subscriber switches to a bridge. Xatu allows messages to be sent to all subscribers without missing messages.

The relation between auditory presence and psychological fac.ors of sound perception was discussed. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationship. Sufficient information on sound should be provided to the listener for imaging the original scene naturally and sound sources should be well localized. The effects of visual information clarified the multimodal nature of the impression of presence.
