To increase reliability, manufac.urers must be able to discover a high percentage of defective chips during their testing procedures. This paper would highlight the attention given by most customers who are expecting the designer to include testability features that will increase their product reliability. This paper focuses on the design of a UART chip with embedded built-in-self-test (BIST) architecture using FPGA technology. The paper starts by describing the behavior of UART circuit using VHISC hardware description language (VHDL). In the implementation phase, the BIST technique will be incorporated into the UART design before the overall design is synthesized by means of reconfiguring the existing design to match testability requirements.

The widespread adoption of USB Type-C technology has been remarkable in recent years. Electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers now utilize Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C connectors in compliance with the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) specification for power transmission and reception. Although USB Type-C devices are equipped with a function of auto-notification of their IDs, the function is not always guaranteed to work; we cannot rely on the ID notification. Relying exclusively on this data for comprehensive device identification presents a significant obstacle. Based on the ground, this study introduces an approach to identify USB-C-connected devices by analyzing the power waveform in USB PD negotiations, a distinctive feature of USB Type-C. The goal is to identify these devices regardless of their charging rates or circuit designs. Furthermore, our proposed method was validated using a virtual grid hub (VG-Hub) with seven USB-PD-compliant Type-C ports oriented toward renewable energy. The proposed method using VG-Hub showed excellent performance, achieving 99.25% accuracy, repeatability, and F1 score over the previous method. This demonstrated the effectiveness of the USB Type-C connected device classification method independent of device state.

A new system of knowledge extraction and recognition from scenery images is proposed in this paper. The system can extract different levels of knowledge automatically using Fuzzy Inference Neural Network (FINN). The proposed system consists of several Knowledge Extraction Networks (KENs). Each one is composed of FINN, and it can extract fuzzy if-then rules automatically. The KEN has an input-output (I/O) layer and two different-sized rule layers. The I/O layer includes the input part and the output part. The input part receives information on a pixel such as the position, the Intensity, the Hue and the Saturation. The output part receives the label of the corresponding pixel such as sky, mountains and woods, etc. The larger rule layer extracts detailed knowledge and it uses for the image recognition. On the other hand, the smaller rule layer extracts global knowledge which can correct contradiction of detailed knowledge and can remove trivial knowledge. It can be seen that the proposed system can recognize the image almost correctly by computer experiments. Knowledge is obtained by integrating rules from each KEN and then translating them into linguistic form. The extracted knowledge is quite natural.

With the proliferation of portable computing platforms and small wireless devices, the classical dilemma of leader election in mobile ad hoc networks has received attention from the research community in recent years. The problem aims to elect a unique leader among mobile nodes regardless of their physical locations. But, existing distributed leader election algorithms do not cope with highly spontaneous nature of mobile ad hoc networks. This paper presents a consensus-based leader election algorithm that finds a local extrema among the nodes participating in leader election. The algorithm is highly adaptive with ad hoc networks in the sense that it can tolerate intermittent failures, such as link failures, sudden crash or recovery of mobile nodes, network partitions, and merging of connected network components associated with ad hoc networks. The paper also presents proofs of correctness to exhibit the fairness of this algorithm.

The safety and quality of life for the approximately 350,000 dialysis patients in Japan are critically affected by the risk of unintentional needle dislodgement during hemodialysis, which represents a significant cause of medical accidents. This study introduces an innovative approach to detect needle dislodgement, focusing on the nonhemolytic detection of indwelling needle dislodgement. By analyzing the impedance change through capacitive coupling between the patient and a detection circuit, we developed a prototype system that generates spectrograms based on frequency and phase characteristics from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. These spectrograms capture the changes in electrical characteristics associated with needle dislodgement, with alterations in color indicating changes in gain and phase difference. Initial experiments demonstrated the feasibility of using spectrogram analysis to visually distinguish normal from venous needle dislodgement (VND) conditions. Our results emphasize the potential for applying machine learning algorithms to these spectrograms for accurate and automated detection of VND. This could significantly improve patient safety by enabling the early detection of dislodgement events under various conditions, including partial needle contact or leakage at the puncture site. Future research will focus on expanding the dataset of normal and VND state spectrograms for machine learning training, aiming to validate the effectiveness of this technology in clinical settings.

The process of introducing emotion can be improved through three-dimensional (3D) tutoring system. The problem that still not solved is how to provide realistic tutor (avatar) in virtual environment. This paper propose an approach to teach children on understanding emotion sensation through fac.al expression and sense of touch (haptic).The algorithm is created by calculating constant fac.or (f) based on maximum value of RGB and magnitude force then magnitude force range will be associated into particular colour. The Integration process will be started from rendering the fac.al expression then followed by adjusting the vibration power to emotion value. The result that achieved on experiment, it show around 71% students agree with the classification of magnitude force into emotion representation. Respondents commented that high magnitude force create similar sensation when respondents feel anger, while low magnitude force is more relaxing to respondents. Respondents also said that haptic and fac.al expression is very interactive and realistic.

Recognizing and extracting exact name entities, like Persons, Locations, Organizations, Dates and Times are very useful to mining information from electronics resources and text. Learning to extract these types of data is called Named Entity Recognition (NER) task. Proper named entity recognition and extraction is important to solve most problems in hot research area such as Question Answering and Summarization Systems, information Retrieval and information Extraction, Machine Translation, Video Annotation, Semantic Web Search and Bioinformatics. In this paper we have improved the precision in NER from text using the new proposed method that calls FSVM. In our method we have employed Support Vector Machine as one of the best machine learning algorithm for classification and contribute a new fuzzy membership function thus removing the Support Vector Machinepsilas weakness points in NER precision and multi classification. The design of our method is a kind of One-Against-All multi classification technique to solve the traditional binary classifier in SVM.

Incorporating the side information of text corpus, i.e., authors, time stamps, and emotional tags, into the traditional text mining models has gained significant interests in the area of information retrieval, statistical natural language processing, and machine learning. One branch of these works is the so-called Author Topic Model (ATM), which incorporates the authors's interests as side information into the classical topic model. However, the existing ATM needs to predefine the number of topics, which is difficult and inappropriate in many real-world settings. In this paper, we propose an Infinite Author Topic (IAT) model to resolve this issue. Instead of assigning a discrete probability on fixed number of topics, we use a stochastic process to determine the number of topics from the data itself. To be specific, we extend a gamma-negative binomial process to three levels in orderto capture the author-document-keyword hierarchical structure. Furthermore, each document is assigned a mixed gamma process that accounts for the multi-author's contribution towards this document. An efficient Gibbs sampling inference algorithm witheach conditional distribution being closed-form is developed for the IAT model. Experiments on several real-world datasets show the capabilities of our IAT model to learn the hidden topics, authors' interests on these topics and the number of topics simultaneously.

Artificial life (A-Life) is a new paradigm to realize a phenomena of life and to extract the hidden principles. One of the most attractive features in the A-Life approach is emergence: simple elements interact with each other based on lower level rules, and then the higher level complex phenomena can emerge by interaction. The paper proposes a method for knowledge extraction and integration based on an A-Life approach. The proposed system has two parts: the knowledge extraction network and the A-Life environment. The simple elements interact in the A-Life environment and the data is transferred to the knowledge extraction network. The knowledge is extracted in the form of rules in the rule layer and then they are fed back to the simple elements in the A-Life environment. We dealt with a path planning problem as an example of A-Life environment. In the simulation, we assumed a severe condition: the position of the goal was unknown to the robots. Since the robots did not know the goal in the initial condition, the trajectory by the first robot that reached the goal is very complicated. The trajectory data which the robots had taken were inputted to the knowledge extraction network to extract rules. The trajectories become smooth step by step because of the extracted rules. We extracted various kinds of the rules using several different simple environments. By using the rules extracted from the simpler environments, the robot could reach the goal in a more complex environment.

Incremental dependency parsing based on headed context-free grammar

This paper proposes the incremental dependency parsing method based on the context-free grammar with dependency information. In the proposed method, the reachability, which represents the relation between categories, is used. In parallel to the inputting of sentence, the dependency, which is the relation between the modifying word and the modified word, is computed. In the proposed method, the parse tree to cover the inputted fragment of the sentence is not needed. Consequently, the method can compute the dependency more efficiently than the method that computes the dependency from the parse tree. As a result of a parsing experiment using ATIS corpus, the proposed method utilizing the reachability is demonstrated to be effective in reducing the parsing time. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
