The Modeling of 2D Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (Csamt) Responses Using Finite Element Method

This paper presents the modeling of 2D CSAMT responses generated by horizontal electric dipole using the separation of primary and secondary field technique. The primary field is calculated using 1D analytical solution for homogeneous earth and it is used to calculate the secondary electric field in the inhomogeneous Helmholtz Equation. Calculation of Helmholtz Equation is carried out using the finite element method. Validation of this modeling is conducted by comparison of numerical results with 1D analytical response for the case of homogeneous and layered earth. The comparison of CSAMT responses are also provided for 2D cases of vertical contact and anomalous conductive body with the 2D magnetotelluric (MT) responses. The results of this study are expected to provide better interpretation of the 2D CSAMT data.

Universities give a huge impact towards processes of economic development and social change of Malaysia. Therefore it is very crucial to retain a good quality of life among lecturers to ensure all these academic staffs have a high quality of teaching and also in conducting research. A study has been conducted to investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of lecturers at a public university in Selangor. A survey methodology using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire was utilised to collect the data. Descriptive analysis and multivariate test were used to analyse the data. The Malaysian general population norms were applied as a key indicator reflecting the various domains whether scores below or above the average of our country especially according to gender. In order to make a comparison between scores of lecturers with population norm for Malaysia, the means and standard deviation were presented.

The Single-Chip Cloud computer (SCC) is an experimental processor created by Intel Labs. It comprises 48 x86 cores linked by an on-chip high performance network, as well as four DDR3 memory controllers to access an off-chip main memory of up to 64GiB. This work evaluates the performance of the SCC when accessing the off-chip memory. The focus of this study is not on taxing the bare hardware. Instead, we are interested in the performance of applications that run on the Linux operating system and use the SCC as it is provided. We see that the per-core read memory bandwidth is largely independent of the number of cores accessing the memory simultaneously, but that the write memory access performance drops when more cores write simultaneously to the memory. In addition, the global and per-core memory bandwidth, both writing and reading, depends strongly on the memory access pattern.

Traditional edge detection algorithms such as Sobel and Prewitt have been used in many edge detection applications. Canny have proved to be quite efficient in detecting thin edges. This paper discusses the efficiency of these three techniques in the detection of the cortical outline of long tubular bone from radiographs images. The method involves the use of line profile histogram approximation (LPHA) algorithm to detect the outline positions. These positions are then used to calculate geometric measurements such as the internal diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD) and the cortical thickness (CT). The accuracy of these measurements are compared with its retrospective manual measurements which was measure using micro calipers by Dr. Lee Cheng Wai. Visually all three techniques performs reasonably well in detecting the bone cortical edge. However in the quantitative measurements, Canny perform quite well in certain cases but not in others. The performance of Sobel and Prewitt are consistent in most cases but less accurate as compared to Canny.

Continuation principles for the solvability of boundary value problems, depending on degree arguments, require the fixed point free boundaries of given sets of candidate solutions (see e.g. [4]). One of the techniques to satisfy the related transversality conditions is relied on the construction of (Liapunov‐like) bounding functions, whence the title. In our contribution, which is based on the recent papers [5]–[8], [9], [10], we will rather demonstrate the essential ideas of this technique than concrete results in [5]–[8], [9], [10]. We will also try to point out main difficulties and indicate how to overcome them.

In this paper, we introduce the notions of state-space symmetry for nonlinear systems and of the cross operator as a nontrivial natural extension of the linear symmetric case, in terms of the controllability and observability operators associated to it. We give a characterization of a symmetric nonlinear system in terms of the cross operator and a coordinate transformation. Then we analyze the use of the cross operator for solving the Hankel singular value problem of the system. The result is a new and simpler characterization of the solutions of this problem in terms of the cross operator and a metric. © 2009 EUCA.

We consider classification of sequential data in the presence of frequent and abrupt concept changes. The current practice is to use the data after the change to train a new classifier. However, if the window with the new data is too small, the classifier will be undertrained and hence less accurate that the "old'' classifier. Here we propose a method (called WR*) for resizing the training window after detecting a concept change. Experiments with synthetic and real data demonstrate the advantages of WR* over other window resizing methods.

The content of a text is mainly defined by keywords and named entities occurring in it. In particular for news articles, named entities are usually important to define their semantics. However, named entities have ontological features, namely, their aliases, types, and identifiers, which are hidden from their textual appearance. In this paper, we explore weighted combinations of those latent named entity features with keywords for text clustering. To that end, the traditional vector space model is adapted with multiple vectors defined over spaces of entity names, types, name-type pairs, identifiers, and keywords. Clustering quality is evaluated by both of the self purity-separation type and the relative comparison type of measures. Hard and fuzzy clustering experiments of the proposed model on selected data subsets of Reuters-21578 are conducted and evaluated.

Negotiation is a complex emotional decision-making process aiming to reach an agreement to exchange goods or services. Although a daily activity, few people are effective negotiators. Existing support systems make a significant improvement if the negotiation space is well-understood, because computers can better cope with the computational complexity. However, the negotiation space can only be properly developed if the human parties jointly explore their interests. The inherent semantic problem and the emotional issues involved make that negotiation cannot be handled by artificial intelligence alone, and a human-machine collaborative system is required. This interest paper presents research goals, ideas, challenges and an approach towards creating the next generation of negotiation support systems.
