The Paris Agreement, led by the UNFCCC, targets limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims for zero emissions from maritime transport by the early 2100s. IMO introduced the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships in 2013 and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) in 2023, alongside the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) to monitor emissions. Installing wind-powered propulsion is one method suggested for compliance. This study focuses on achieving EEXI and CII compliance using wind assistance, examining wingsail retrofitting on a 6,500-tonne DWT tanker in Indonesia. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models are employed to predict thrust and drag based on wind conditions. Annual energy savings for different sail configurations are evaluated using published wind data, allowing for a comparison of savings versus capital costs to assist ship owners in decision-making. © 2024 IEEE.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives for traction applications are often operated at low switching frequencies to reduce losses. As, however, the switching frequency decreases, problems arise, such as high current distortions and poor dynamic performance. Optimized pulse patterns (OPPs) can be employed to improve the current quality, but they need to be properly handled to achieve good transient response. This papers presents a gradient-based direct model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for PMSM drives that manipulates OPPs in real time such that superior steady-state performance and fast settling times are achieved. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested with simulations, and its superiority over a field-oriented control (FOC) scheme is also demonstrated. © 2024 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the evaluation structure of visual environment in residential spaces with windows and to test the hypothesis that satisfac.ion with daylighting quality is ensured if view quality is good enough. Firstly, we conducted a questionnaire survey for 371 residents to assess the impressions of windows and visual environment. Using covariance structure analysis, pass diagrams of evaluation on lighting quality and view through windows were obtained with observed and latent variables. As a result, it was statistically clarified that the lighting quality and satisfac.ion of the visual environment is greatly affected by view. © 2024 Architectural Institute of Japan. This study tries to evaluate an urban heat island (UHI) susceptibility indicator based on three data clusters: spatial, social indicators and economic indicators over 20 statistical indicators. UHI susceptibility data were confirmed from the related literature to determine their contributions to UHI formation and given scores according to their impacts on UHI susceptibility in the sample of two city centres, Erzurum and Erzincan, Turkey. All three groups of data clusters are seen to be effective in the cities according to their varying characteristics. It is found that spatial distribution of surfac. characteristics, urban geometry, organic urban texture, grid-like urban texture, shares of economic sectors and level of awareness among society are significant fac.ors to affect UHI susceptibility between the cities. Measures to reduce the susceptibility to UHI formation were also proposed. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the effectiveness of real-time and post-trip interventions from the H2020 i-DREAMS naturalistic driving project. The project aims to setup a framework for the definition, development and validation of a context-aware ‘safety tolerance zone (STZ)’ for driving. A range of sensors are used to collect a large variety of data, which enables assessment of the STZ, and help designing interventions. Effectiveness evaluation is based on the outcome and process evaluation using the COM-B and RE-AIM frameworks, respectively. Preliminary results for a sample of 27 car drivers from Belgium and 26 car drivers from UK are presented. Overall, the interventions were found effective in improving driving behaviour. UK drivers have performed significantly better, while Belgian car drivers showed mixed results, mainly due to the changing mobility patterns during COVID19 pandemic.

When buildings are seismically retrofitted, new members are connected to existing members by roughened concrete surfac.. However, there are few studies on roughened concrete. To evaluate the shear strength of the roughened concrete, the shapes of roughened concrete were measured using 3D scanner, then we conducted the shear loading tests. As a result, failure modes were supported failure and shear failure when were respectively 0.1 to 0.3 and 0.5 to 1.0. This paper focused on supported failure, a shear strength formula constructed considering the concrete compressive and the vertical projection area. Teenagers can easily expose to criminal activities through media social, surrounding, and peers. They tend to imitate some of these criminal activities such as cyber bullying, fighting, cyber grooming and cyber harassment without thinking of his or communities' side-effect. Therefore, we develop a self-crime prevention modules encompassing faith, positivity, social relationship, role model and reflection tailored for school teens. Then, we make a list of survey questions using 4 Likert scale to measure their acceptance and adaptation after participating our self-crime module. About 105 school children aged 13-17 participated from Sekolah Menengah Titiwangsa and they responded positively with approximately 3.63 of average score. © 2018 IEEE.

When buildings undergo seismic retrofitting, reinforcing members are connected to existing members by roughening the concrete surfac.s and installing new anchors. In the Japanese guidelines pertaining to the seismic retrofitting of structures, no standards are provided for concrete roughening. Therefore, we conducted shear loading tests and measurements of the roughened surfac.s were taken. Then, mechanical models of the roughened concrete surfac.s were developed based on a constitutive law for cracked concrete surfac.s. Using the results, a model is proposed from which shear stress-shear displacement relations as well as normal stress-shear displacement relations can be reasonably estimated. © 2018 Architectural Institute of Japan.
