In the construction industry,to prevent accidents,non-destructive tests are necessary and *** impedance tomography is a new technology in non-invasive imaging in which the image of the inner part of conductive bodies is reconstructed by the arrays of external electrodes that are connected on the periphery of the *** equipment is cheap,fast,and edge *** this imaging method,the image of electrical conductivity distribution(or its opposite;electrical impedance)of the internal parts of the target object is *** image reconstruction process is performed by injecting a precise electric current to the peripheral boundaries of the object,measuring the peripheral voltages induced from it and processing the collected *** an electrical impedance tomography system,the voltages measured in the peripheral boundaries have a non-linear equation with the electrical conductivity *** paper presents a cheap electrical Impedance Tomography(EIT)instrument for detecting impurities in the concrete.A voltage-controlled current source,a micro-controller,a set of multiplexers,a set of electrodes,and a personal computer constitute the structure of the *** conducted tests on concrete with impurities show that the designed EIT system can reveal impurities with a good accuracy in a reasonable time.

Human values capture what people and societies perceive as desirable, transcend specific situations and serve as guiding principles for action. People’s value systems motivate their positions on issues concerning the economy, society and politics among others, influencing the arguments they make. Identifying the values behind arguments can therefore help us find common ground in discourse and uncover the core reasons behind disagreements. Transformer-based large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable performance across language generation and analysis. However, leveraging LLMs in sociotechnical systems that assist with discourse and argumentation necessitates systematically evaluating their ability to analyse and identify the values behind arguments, an under-explored research direction. Using a multi-level human value taxonomy inspired by the Schwartz Theory of Basic Human Values, we present a systematic and critical evaluation of GPT-3.5-turbo in human value identification from a dataset of multi-cultural arguments, across the zero-shot, few-shot and chain-of-thought prompting strategies, carrying forward from prior research on this task which leveraged a fine-tuned BERT model. We observe that prompting strategies exhibit performance levels close to, but still behind fine-tuning for value classification. We also detail some challenges associated with value classification with LLMs, offering potential directions for future research. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In this paper, we introduce EMD-Based Hyperbolic Diffusion Distance (EMD-HDD), a new method for constructing a meaningful distance metric for hierarchical data with latent hierarchical structure. Our method relies on hyperbolic geometry, diffusion geometry, and the Earth Mover's Distance (EMD). Specifically, our method embeds data points into a product manifold of hyperbolic spaces, allowing us to recover the hidden hierarchical structure encoded by the mutual relationships between features. We demonstrate the effectiveness of EMD-HDD through experiments on five hyperspectral imaging datasets, showcasing its capability to capture and reveal the intrinsic hierarchical structures inherent in such data. © 2025 IEEE.

Now Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) severs and Device-to-Device (D2D) communications provide offload computing services for User Devices (UDs). However, the UAV has relatively high transmission latency. And D2D lacks the necessary flexibility. In this paper, we introduce a novel MEC system that utilizes the collaborative advantages of flexible movement of UAV and the low latency transmission of D2D communication to process tasks from UDs. We formulate an optimization problem focused on minimizing the tasks transmission and execution delay of UDs. The problem involves joint optimization of user scheduling, UAV trajectory, and resource allocation of Virtual Machines (VMs) on the MEC server. To tackle this non-convex problem, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm with Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). Through simulation results, we demonstrate that DDPG reduces the latency by 41% compared to Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Actor-Critic (AC) algorithm. Our collaborative UAV-D2D model has 16% and 32% lower latency than when only the UAV or D2D works alone. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system uses alternating magnetic field to transmit power from the transmitter to the receiver. To confine the magnetic field, WPT coils are realized with high permeability substrate material that ensures shielding. Aside from shielding, high permeability substrate also increases the coil inductance. When transmitter and receiver coils are placed in close proximity, high permeability substrate of transmitter coil increases the inductance of the receiver coil, and vice versa. This additional inductance increase is a function of the substrate material type and the distance between the coils. To achieve high efficiency and low losses of the WPT system, a capacitor network is added to both transmitter and receiver coil. In a common serial-serial (S-S) WPT system topology, the capacitor networks are asymmetric, i.e. the capacitor network of the transmitter and the receiver are not identical. The efficiency of asymmetric S-S topology is significantly impaired due to variable coil inductance. To attain high efficiency in such operating conditions, this paper proposes symmetric S-S WPT topology with emphasis on transmission distance optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has become an indispensable way to reduce the execution delay of devices. However, for some devices located far away from the MEC server, the transmission delay of communication with MEC is still large. In this case, we consider using multiple relay devices to assist Internet of Things (IoT) devices to communicate with MEC servers. To enhance the energy efficiency of the system, we introduce Energy Harvesting (EH) devices to provide energy for the IoT devices. Our objective is to maximize the utilization of EH devices while minimizing the overall delay in task offloading for the IoT devices. We tackle the problem by formulating it as a Markov Decision Problem (MDP). However, due to the significant expansion of the state space, traditional methods such as relative value iteration and linear iterative reconstruction are ineffective in solving this problem. Hence, we propose an approach called Multi-Relay Assisted Dynamic Computation Offloading (MRADCO) algorithm, which leverages the Lyapunov optimization technique. It is important to note that our proposed algorithm makes decisions solely based on the current state, without requiring the distribution information of the wireless channel and EH process. This characteristic enhances the algorithm’s practicality and reduces complexity in real-world implementations. Through rigorous theoretical derivation and comprehensive simulation experiments, we demonstrate that our algorithm is asymptotically optimal. And compared with the benchmark algorithm LODCO, our algorithm reduces the time by 50%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

This paper brings the concept of 'optimism' to the new and promising framework of online Non-stochastic Control (NSC). Namely, we study how NSC can benefit from a prediction oracle of unknown quality responsible for forecasting future costs. The posed problem is first reduced to an optimistic learning with delayed feedback problem, which is handled through the Optimistic Follow the Regularized Leader (OFTRL) algorithmic family. This reduction enables the design of OptFTRL-C, the first Disturbance Action Controller (DAC) with optimistic policy regret bounds. These new bounds are commensurate with the oracle's accuracy, ranging from O (1) for perfect predictions to the order-optimal O(ST) even when all predictions fail. By addressing the challenge of incorporating untrusted predictions into online control, this work contributes to the advancement of the NSC framework and paves the way toward effective and robust learning-based controllers. © 2024 IEEE.

Traditional volume surface integral equation for analysis of metal-dielectric composites requires the target mesh to be conformal, which leads to over-meshing of the multi-scale model and reduces the solution efficiency. In order to deal with this problem, a non-conformal volume surface integral equation (VSIE) method based on the discontinuous Galerkin volume integral equation (DGVIE) and the grid-robust higher order vector basis (GRHOVB) surface integral equation is proposed in this paper to enhance the computing efficiency. In this method, the DGVIE is used to deal with dielectric target, which avoids the computation of higher-order singular integrals and facilitates the use of volume non-conformal meshing and mixed basis function discretization. The GRHOVB function is used to deal with PEC target, so that the surface mesh also does not need to be conformal. Numerical results verify the good performance of this non-conformal method. © 2024 IEEE.

This study explores the role of teaching assistants (TAs) as assessors in a university’s computer science program. It examines the challenges and implications of TAs in grading, with a focus on their expertise and grading consistency. The paper analyzes grading experiences in various exam settings and investigates the impact on assessment quality. We adopt an empirical methodology and answer the research question by analyzing the data from two exams. The chosen exams have similar learning objectives but they differ in how TAs graded them, thus providing an opportunity to reflect on different grading styles. It concludes with recommendations for enhancing TA grading effectiveness, emphasizing the need for detailed rubrics, training, and monitoring to ensure fair and reliable assessment in higher education. Emerging non-volatile memory technologies provides a solution to break through the limitations of the vonNeumann architecture and using these technologies to develop logic-in-memory circuits. In this paper, we propose a novel circuit design style based on hafnium oxide ferroelectric memory technology, using a accumulator as an example. This design method offers a new direction for the development of logic-in-memory circuits. Additionally, the method significantly increases data processing capability and provides greater flexibility for circuit design. © 2024 IEEE.
