Enhancing single-lead electrocardiogram arrhythmia detection with empirical mode decomposition

Cardiac arrhythmias pose a significant challenge to health care, requiring accurate and reliable detection methods to enable early diagnosis and treatment. However, traditional ECG beat classification methods often lack robustness and fail to generalize effectively to diverse clinical scenarios, particularly when using single-lead-I recordings, which are less studied compared to lead II. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel method that combines deep learning and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for arrhythmia detection using single-lead-I ECG recordings obtained with electrodes on each hand. The hybrid model comprises 149 layers of one-dimensional convolution, max pooling, and residual blocks. By leveraging EMD, it classifies ECG beats into normal beats, premature ventricular contractions, and atrial premature beats with high sensitivity (99.86%, 99.72%, and 99.84%, respectively) using the first four intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The proposed method is applicable in clinical and out-of-hospital monitoring scenarios, and an accompanying web application provides real-time analysis and diagnostic results. This approach addresses a critical gap in lead-I ECG analysis, enhancing diagnostic precision and expanding the scope of ECG applications in health care. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Body fitness monitoring applications are using mobile sensors to identify human activities. Human activity identification is a challenging task because of the wide availability of human activities. This paper proposes a novel technique that extracts the discriminative dimensions for human activity identification. Particularly, a novel technique with convolutional neural networks (CNN) is used for catching dependency. A deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) consists of two different types of layers, convolutional and pooling are used. The depth of each filter increases from left to right in the network. Three activities like walking, running, remaining still are collected from smart mobile sensors. The axis like x, y, and z information was transferred with column vector magnitude information and utilised for studying or training CNN. Experimental results show that CNN-based method achieves 93.67% accuracy than the baseline random forest approach's 89.20%. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In the field of automated language processing, distinguishing between Moroccan Arabic (Darija) in multilingual contexts is a major challenge. This study addresses this challenge by exploiting feature selection techniques to improve the accuracy of tongue detection. Using a comprehensive methodology integrating various feature selection methods, including TF-idf, CBOW, Word2Vec for feature extraction, LASSO regression, decision trees for machine learning techniques, and statistical feature selection such as ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Mutual information, alongside semantic techniques by developing our semantic encoders adapted to Arabic data, we strive to uncover the most important, relevant language features while attenuating the noise. As a result, we have obtained robust results by applying the famous XGBOOST, with conventional extraction methods and SVD as a dimensional reduction method with a very reasonable execution time. Our experimental results highlight the effectiveness of feature selection techniques to reinforce supervised learning tasks. This research not only advances the field of natural language processing but also highlights the central role of feature selection in deciphering complex linguistic landscapes. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

Modified simulated annealing for university teacher course assignment considering socio-cultural constraints

This paper aims to address the complex challenge of course assignment for faculty members within a Saudi university, taking into account the socio-cultural constraints imposed by gender-based segregation between students and faculty. To tackle this challenge, a combinatorial optimization model is proposed, which includes a binary representation of the problem, constraints reflecting gender segregation, and an objective function designed to maximize faculty satisfaction. The model employs a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm, supplemented with two neighborhood search heuristics (H1 and H2), to explore diverse combinations. Additionally, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithm is implemented for comparative analysis, utilizing heuristic 1 for local search. Through the application of simulated annealing alongside both heuristics (SA_H1_H2), the optimal solution is achieved, resulting in a notable equilibrium of courses among faculty members. Objective 1 demonstrates the standardized deviation in workload distribution among faculty members, yielding a deviation value of 0.08. This study contributes to the field by proposing a novel approach to course assignment that explicitly addresses the gender-based segregation prevalent in Saudi universities. By integrating socio-cultural constraints into the optimization model and employing advanced algorithms, the study offers a pioneering solution to a previously unexplored problem domain. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

EFS-XGBoost: A robust framework for precision classification of COVID-19 cases

The emergence of the novel COVID-19 virus has had a profound impact on global healthcare systems and economies, underscoring the imperative need for the development of precise and expeditious diagnostic tools. Machine learning techniques have emerged as a promising avenue for augmenting the capabilities of medical professionals in disease diagnosis and classification. In this research, the EFS-XGBoost classifier model, a robust approach for the classification of patients afflicted with COVID-19 is proposed. The key innovation in the proposed model lies in the Ensemble-based Feature Selection (EFS) strategy, which enables the judicious selection of relevant features from the expansive COVID-19 dataset. Subsequently, the power of the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier to make precise distinctions among COVID-19-infected patients is *** EFS methodology amalgamates five distinctive feature selection techniques, encompassing correlation-based, chi-squared, information gain, symmetric uncertainty-based, and gain ratio approaches. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model, comprehensive experiments were conducted using a COVID-19 dataset procured from Kaggle, and the implementation was executed using Python programming. The performance of the proposed EFS-XGBoost model was gauged by employing well-established metrics that measure classification accuracy, including accuracy, precision, recall, and the F1-Score. Furthermore, an in-depth comparative analysis was conducted by considering the performance of the XGBoost classifier under various scenarios: employing all features within the dataset without any feature selection technique, and utilizing each feature selection technique in isolation. The meticulous evaluation reveals that the proposed EFS-XGBoost model excels in performance, achieving an astounding accuracy rate of 99.8%, surpassing the efficacy of other prevailing feature selection techniques. Context: Usability is a major factor in the acceptance of digital health (DH) solutions. Problem: Despite its importance, usability experts have expressed concerns about the insufficient attention given to usability evaluation in practice, indicating potential efficiency problems of common evaluation methods in the health care domain. Objectives: This research paper aimed to analyse industrial usability evaluation practices in digital health to identify potential threats to the efficiency of their application. Method: To this end, we conducted an online survey of 144 usability experts experienced in usability evaluations for digital health applications. The survey questions aimed to explore the prevalence of techniques applied, and the participants’familiarity and perceptions regarding tools and techniques. Results: The prevalently applied techniques might impose efficiency problems in common scenarios in digital health. Participant recruitment is considered time consuming and selecting the most appropriate evaluation method for a given context is perceived difficult. The results highlight a lack of utilisation of tools automating aspects of usability evaluation. Conclusions: A more widespread adoption of tools for automating usability evaluation activities seems desirable as well as guidelines for selecting evaluation techniques in a given context. We furthermore recommend to explore AI-based solutions to address the problem of involving targeted user groups that are difficult to access for usability evaluations. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – science and Technology Publications, Lda.
