This paper presents the summary of the Efficient Face Recognition Competition (EFaR) held at the 2023 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2023). The competition received 17 submissions from 6 different teams. To drive further development of efficient face recognition models, the submitted solutions are ranked based on a weighted score of the achieved verification accuracies on a diverse set of benchmarks, as well as the deployability given by the number of floating-point operations and model size. The evaluation of submissions is extended to bias, cross-quality, and large-scale recognition benchmarks. Overall, the paper gives an overview of the achieved performance values of the submitted solutions as well as a diverse set of baselines. The submitted solutions use small, efficient network architectures to reduce the computational cost, some solutions apply model quantization. An outlook on possible techniques that are underrepresented in current solutions is given as well.

This study gives a review of Extended Reality (XR)-based on education tools, with a focus on the new technology that has seen significant growth in the context of education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Comprehensive research on XR and its applications for the Covid-19 outbreak is conducted using keywords such as education, virtual reality, and Covid-19 pandemic. This includes searching from databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of science (WoS), IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Springer Link, Research Gate, and Academia. The goal of this study was to figure out the significant research efforts in XR technology in the education field during the pandemic. To begin with, we provide an overview of XR followed by describing how this technology contributes to educational experiences. Additionally, we discuss the XR implications and challenges to boost the comprehension of theoretical concepts and technical practice procedures in the education field. Lastly, we consider potential directions for XR technical breakthroughs in present educational experiences linked to the learning domain, as well as preventive measures to prevent the virus from spreading.

This paper reports the pattern formation and evolution in a high-frequency dielectric regime observed in the AC-driven electroconvection of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs). It is determined that prewavy (PW) instability is essential for the formation and evolution. Specifically, in a twisted-aligned NLC cell, we observe a unique pattern that is comparable to the dielectric chevrons (DCVs) typically observed in a conventional planarly aligned pattern. It is determined to be a combined PW pattern with dielectric normal rolls (DNRs). Moreover, the power indices (αPW, αDNR, and αDCV) are determined from the frequency-dependent thresholds (Vth∝fα) of PW, DNR, and DCV. By taking into account the appearance of PW and the different power indices, the pattern evolution scenarios for DCV are proposed, which can well explain the previous experimental results. Specifically, the PW-originated DCV2 clearly differs from the defect-mediated DCV1, which is known as a typical pattern evolution.

In this paper, we investigate influences of the network delay on haptic cooperative work in a networked virtual environment by experiment. In the work, two users carry an object cooperatively in a networked maze system by manipulating haptic interface devices. We handle two carrying methods in our experiment. In one method, the two users hold the object. In the other method, one user holds the object and the other user pushes it. We measure the operation time and reaction force, and we compare them between the two methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the former method has smaller average operation time than the latter method, but the average reaction force is larger in the former.
