This paper describes a new approach to analyze road images which often contain vehicles and extract license plate (LP) from natural properties by finding vertical and horizontal edges. In this paper, initially, segmentation technique named as sliding concentric windows (SCW) on the basis of a novel adaptive image segmentation technique for detecting candidate region. Color verification for candidate region by using HIS color model on the basis of using hue and intensity in HIS color model verifying green and yellow LP and white LP, respectively. Tilt correction in horizontal direction by the least square fitting with perpendicular offsets (LSFPO) is proposed and implemented for estimating rotation angle of the LP region. Then the whole image is rotated for tilt correction in horizontal direction by this angle. Tilt correction in vertical direction by reorientation of the titled LP candidate through inverse affine transformation is proposed and implemented for removing shear from the LP candidates. Finally, statistical based template matching technique is used for recognition of Korean plate characters. Various LP images are used with a variety of conditions to test the proposed method and results are presented to prove its effectiveness.

IPONS (information & POwer Networks in Spacecrafts) is an initiative launched by Astrium Satellites to investigate the classical idea of "Power Line Communications" (PLC) technology for development of advanced electrical S/C architectures with combined Power Networks & Data Links. A gross saving of up to 50% of harness mass in addition to significant savings in engineering costs and time is envisaged. An assessment of PLC transmission techniques has been performed targeting Medium Data Rates > IMBit/s. As a result the use of typical Twisted Pair Power Harness with special terminations for impedance control is proposed. Thus simple modulation schemes for data transmission can be used avoiding complex signal processors in favour of simple and inexpensive FPGA or ASIC solutions.

In this paper, we present a grid computing platform that provides experimental scientists and analysts with access to computational simulations and knowledge databases hosted in separate laboratories around the world involved with human and animal kidney research. No single laboratory can develop these resources in isolation and the community of users should no longer need to be dependent upon the specific programming environment in which applications have been developed. This is a major innovation in life science and exploits the power of existing and planned high-bandwidth communications networks for collaborative research and for shared access to knowledge resources. The innovation is developed within a specialist community of renal scientists but will be transferable to any other field of research requiring interaction between published literature and databases, theoretical models and simulations and the formulation of effective experimental design. © 2006 ACM.

Many job applications on the Web provide only simple Boolean comparison using only basic information requirements (i.e., degree, age) for searching and matching jobs to candidates. The net effect is too many 'hits'. We showed that personality is an important factor for the hiring process and satisfaction of employers and employees. In designing better filters for searching and matching a job application on the Web, we considered this factor with general job requirements and then combined it with our matching process. We have tested our model using data obtained from applicants who applied for jobs with a company in Thailand. The results show that we are able to give a better match than that achieved using basic qualifications only.

The development of Decision Support systems (DSS) for several companies operating in sectors such as tourism, healthcare, or others, presents significant challenges due to the nature of their multi-component architecture. A typical DSS consists of a data component, a model component incorporating machine learning and deep learning techniques, and a user interface component, each one requires diverse technologies. This complexity increases development time and effort, hindering the efficient design of DSS tailored to specific domains like tourism, where real-time decision-making is essential. One promising approach to overcome these challenges is the use of Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs). DSLs allow developers to model and generate code more efficiently by providing high-level abstractions suited to the domain. By leveraging DSLs, it is possible to simplify the design process and automate the generation of code or parts of the DSS, thereby reducing the overall complexity and time required for development. This paper proposes a metamodel for designing DSS, specifically for the Smart Tourism sector. The metamodel serves as a foundation for the creation of DSL. The goal is to provide a solution to facilitate the development of DSS for the demands of tourism. The paper outlines the key concepts, approach, and results, presenting the first element of the proposed DSL which is the metamodel capturing the essential components and relationships for DSS in Smart Tourism.

Location-based applications have become very popular in recent years, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has intensified the trend towards applications for electronic purchases and delivery services, to provide customers the facility of buying from anywhere and anytime, with great ease. However, there are some issues with these kind of purchases and delivery services. In particular, the data collected by these applications has the potential of having their security and privacy breached. Thus, trust of the service provider cannot be taken for granted. In fact, the service provider may prove to be a source of real danger to the privacy of users, especially if the service provider itself is a malicious party. Thus, it is difficult for the user to determine which applications can be trusted, and who to share their home or business location with. To solve this problem, in this research, we propose a new central platform that enables users to gather all of their (main) locations and control access to these locations in one place. Then the user can share them with other applications, such as link with hash-code included in a quick response (QR) barcode without the need to save their data in any application database. Moreover, the QR-code will be deactivated once it is used by the service provider, after the order is delivered. Therefore, the service provider will not be able to exploit the data stored in it, which means greater protection for the user's privacy. The system will offer other features for the user and the service provider as well. We have also implemented this system in a real manner to confirm its ability to improve the level of service in electronic purchase applications, in addition to improving the level of privacy of users' data.

The CAPSE environment for computer Aided Parallel Software Engineering is intended to assist the developer in the crucial task of parallel programming. The methodology of CAPSE is based on direct manipulative graphical creation and editing of scalable workload characterizations of MIMD algorithms. This paper presents the basic concepts of this methodology and an example of a parallel Poisson solver. The workload characterization representing the computation and communication behavior of the algorithm is based on directed acyclic task graphs, which achieve scalability by composing the task graph of scalable basic patterns instead of single node and arcs. The composition and the usage of these basic patterns is described in the light of designing the Poisson solver algorithm. The resulting task graph is used to predict the program's performance on a nCUBE 2 distributed memory machine and the PAPS simulator.

Due to the rapid growth of Web pages available on the Internet recently, searching a relevant and up-to-date information has become a crucial issue. Conventional search engines use heuristics to determine which Web pages are the best match for a given keyword. Results are obtained from a database that is located at their local server to provide fast searching. However, to search for the relevant and related information needed is still difficult and tedious. By using the genetic algorithm (GA) in relevance feedback, this paper presents a model of hybrid GA-particle swarm optimization (HGAPSO) based query optimization for Web information retrieval. We expanded the keywords to produce the new keywords that are related to the user search. Experimental results demonstrate that it is very effective to improve the search of the relevant web pages using the HGAPSO.

In this paper, we show that it is possible to use electroencephalography (EEG) and multi-brain computing with two humans to guide an Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) system. We show that combining neural activity across two brains increases accuracy to guide evolutionary search more effectively. The IGA system involves a simple task of evolving a polygon shape to approximate the shape of a target polygon. Two candidates visually inspected the evolved polygons and mentally ranked them (independently from each other) from 1×10 based on their similarity to the target polygon. In parallel, the IGA system evaluated the fitness of evolved polygons using a standard fitness function. The IGA system was run for a few generations, before evolution was paused and EEG signals were collected from the two candidates. The collected EEG signals were used to train a regression model that received unseen EEG as input and mapped this into fitness values. The trained model was then used to guide the IGA solely by using the EEG signals. Off-line experimental results showed that it was possible to build better regression models that are trained using two EEG signals to capture participants evaluation of fitness. This paper demonstrates the possibility of a new domain of applications for interactive evolution where standard fitness calculations can be replaced with multiple EEG signals for guiding an optimisation process.
