An increasing number of clinicians (i.e., nurses and physicians) suffer from mental health-related issues like depression and burnout. These, in turn, stress communication, collaboration, and decision-making—areas in which Conversational Agents (CAs) have shown to be useful. Thus, in this work, we followed a mixed-method approach and systematically analysed the literature on factors affecting the well-being of clinicians and CAs’ potential to improve said well-being by relieving support in communication, collaboration, and decision-making in hospitals. In this respect, we are guided by Brigham et al. (2018)’s model of factors influencing well-being. Based on an initial number of 840 articles, we further analysed 52 papers in more detail and identified the influences of CAs’ fields of application on external and individual factors affecting clinicians’ well-being. As our second method, we will conduct interviews with clinicians and experts on CAs to verify and extend these influencing factors. In today’s technologically-driven era, robotic systems have been integrated into various aspects of our daily lives, handling tasks from household chores to complex industrial applications. With these robotic systems becoming increasingly commonplace in homes, offices, and public spaces, the demand for effective and adaptable motion planning becomes paramount. Traditional motion planning methods, although having made noteworthy progress, still have difficulties with the challenges posed by dynamic environments characterized by unpredictable elements and rapid changes. Recognizing this gap, this paper introduces a novel reinforcement learning-based path planning algorithm specifically designed for dynamic scenarios. Through the integration of Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) reinforcement algorithm, our approach empowers robots to actively chart their paths, adapting in real-time to unforeseen obstacles and shifts in the environment. To validate our methodology, we undertook extensive experiments comparing our approach to established benchmark methods, notably SARSA, A∗, and Regular Reinforcement Learning (RL) (i.e., non PPO-based). The results not only highlight the effectiveness of our proposed solution but also emphasize its potential to reshape how robotic systems navigate complex, ever-evolving environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Enhancing Deep Reinforcement Learning with Scenario-Based Modeling

Deep reinforcement learning agents have achieved unprecedented results when learning to generalize from unstructured data. However, the “black-box” nature of the trained DRL agents makes it difficult to ensure that they adhere to various requirements posed by engineers. In this work, we put forth a novel technique for enhancing the reinforcement learning training loop, and specifically—its reward function, in a way that allows engineers to directly inject their expert knowledge into the training process. This allows us to make the trained agent adhere to multiple constraints of interest. Moreover, using scenario-based modeling techniques, our method allows users to formulate the defined constraints using advanced, well-established, behavioral modeling methods. This combination of such modeling methods together with ML learning tools produces agents that are both high performing and more likely to adhere to prescribed constraints. Furthermore, the resulting agents are more transparent and hence more maintainable. We demonstrate our technique by evaluating it on a case study from the domain of internet congestion control, and present promising results. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Quality control processes in manufacturing often still rely on manual tasks. Applying decision mining can support users by providing valuable insight into the process. This paper discusses the potential of integrating contextual information into decision mining to achieve accurate and meaningful decision rules in the context of a case study stemming from the manufacturing domain. To explore this, a new approach, DigiEMine, is presented, which addresses the gap between information extraction and practical decision mining applications by integrating information extracted from engineering drawings with time sequence data in the form of diameter measurements of workpieces. The discovery of relational decision rules is enabled, allowing for contextualization of the decision rules. The output of this approach is presented in both textual decision rules and visually on engineering drawings, empowering users to make informed quality control decisions. The case study includes three datasets originating from cylindrical workpiece production. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach and the ability to generate meaningful decision rules across the tested datasets. Its potential applicability extends beyond the presented case study, with conceivable scenarios in multiple domains, such as healthcare or logistics, where integrating context information, such as regulatory data, with time sequence data is required to provide additional context for decisions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Accurate fall detection for orthopedic walker users is essential for timely medical intervention and enhancing safety for elderly and mobility-impaired individuals. This paper introduces a new method using a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) neural network to detect falls and classify motion patterns in walker usage. We use the Walker dataset, which includes inertial measurement unit sensor data for four motion classes: idle, motion, step, and fall. The dataset consists of 6-axis IMU readings (3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope) from sensors mounted on orthopedic walkers, with around 620 samples per class. Our BiGRU model leverages temporal dependencies in both forward and backward directions to improve classification accuracy. We assess the model's performance in two scenarios: binary classification (fall vs. non-fall) and multi-class classification of all four motion types. The proposed architecture shows strong performance, achieving 99.79% accuracy and a 99.73% F1-score in binary classification, and 98.51% accuracy and a 98.50% F1-score in multi-class classification. It outperforms traditional deep learning models like CNN, LSTM, and GRU. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of bidirectional processing in capturing temporal motion patterns, indicating significant potential for realtime fall detection in walker-assisted mobility. The high precision and recall values in both scenarios demonstrate the model's reliability for practical healthcare monitoring applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Emotion recognition using EEG signals has gained growing attention in recent years due to its promising applications in human-computer interaction, affective computing, and mental health assessment. This study investigates the performance of various deep learning architectures in classifying emotional states from EEG recordings. We utilize the Emotion EEG dataset as a benchmark and evaluate five prominent deep learning models. The classification task targets three emotion categories: neu-tral, positive, and negative. Experimental results reveal notable differences in model performance. Among the tested models, BiGRU achieves the highest classification accuracy of 97.70% (±0.69%), followed closely by BiLSTM with 97.37% (±0.17%). These bidirectional architectures significantly outperform the CNN model, which attains an accuracy of only 61.59% (±1.22%). The LSTM and GRU models yield intermediate results, nearing 92% accuracy. The findings highlight the effectiveness of bidirectional recurrent neural networks in modeling the temporal characteristics of EEG signals for emotion detection. This research contributes to advancing EEG-based emotion recognition by identifying the most suitable deep learning strategies, thus supporting the development of more intelligent and emotion-aware computing systems. © 2025 IEEE.

With the rise of wearable sensors and smart devices, human activity recognition (HAR) has become a vital research area in ubiquitous computing. Although many studies report high accuracy using k-fold cross-validation, these results often do not reflect actual generalization interpretation due to subject-dependent data leakage, where models test on activities from the subjects they were trained. This study compares traditional k-fold cross-validation with leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) validation using the WISDM dataset, highlighting the importance of proper validation techniques in HAR systems. We implemented and evaluated five advanced deep learning models - convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and bidirectional GRU (BiGRU) - on windowed raw sensor data. Our experiments showed significant differences between validation methods. The BiGRU model achieved 97.91% accuracy with k-fold cross-validation and 98.02% with LOSO validation, while the CNN model achieved only 92.55% and 93.44%, respectively. These results underscore the impact of both model architecture and validation approach on performance. Our findings stress the need for subject-independent validation strategies like LOSO to develop truly generalizable HAR systems. © 2025 IEEE.
