Machine learning models for modeling the biosorption of Fe(III) ions by activated carbon from olive stone

Using experimental results related to the biosorption of Fe(III) by activated carbon derived from olive pit waste, we developed and evaluated four artificial neural network (ANN) models in this study, namely MLP-ANN, RBF-ANN, GR-ANN, and PSO-ANN, to predict the removal efficiency of Fe(III) during the adsorption process. The purpose of these models was to forecast the effect of the following five important operational variables: the initial concentration, time, stirring speed, temperature, and biosorbent dose. We conducted a thorough assessment of the performance of these models and compared their ability to predict the removal capacity. Several statistical metrics have been used to quantify the quality of the different models. The results calculated by the machine learning models were analyzed and compared with the experimental results. The obtained values of the coefficient of determination were 0.9997 for the PSO-ANN model, 0.991 for the GR-ANN model, 0.983 for the RBF-ANN model, and 0.837 for the MLP-ANN model concerning the removal efficiency. All the studied models are able to accurately predict the adsorbed quantity. ANOVA analysis was used to evaluate the effect of the parameters inherent to the PSO-ANN model. In recent years, self-assembling de novo-designed peptides have attracted increasing attention as materials for constructing submicrometer-scale structures. We have previously conducted structure-activity relationship studies on the BXBA-20 series of 20-residue amphiphilic peptides containing 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) [Higashimoto, Y. et al. (1999) J. Biochem. 125, 705-712;Hara, T. et al. (2001) J. Biochem. 130, 749-755;Taira, J. et al. (2010) J. Pept. Sci. 16, 607-612]. These peptides share the common sequence Ac-(Aib-Xxx-Aib-Ala)₅-NH₂, where the introduction of a hydrophilic amino acid at the Xxx position results in the formation of a hydrophilic face on one side of the helix. Among them, some peptides exhibited weak intermolecular association and interactions with lipid membranes, though none demonstrated the ability to form submicrometer-scale structures through self-assembly. In this study, we present BKBL-20, a new member of this peptide series incorporating leucine on the hydrophobic face and lysine on the hydrophilic face. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated strong association in buffer, while hemolysis assays revealed significant membrane disruption. Transmission electron microscopy further confirmed the formation of ordered fibrous or array-like structures. These findings suggest that BKBL-20 successfully combines self-assembly and membrane-disruptive functions. © 2025 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society.

Recently, many corpora have been developed that contain multiple annotations of various linguistic phenomena, from morphological categories of words through the syntactic structure of sentences to discourse and coreference relations in texts. Discussions are ongoing on an appropriate annotation scheme for a large amount of diverse information. In our contribution we express our conviction that a multilayer annotation scheme offers to view the language system in its complexity and in the interaction of individual phenomena and that there are at least two aspects that support such a scheme: (i) A multilayer annotation scheme makes it possible to use the annotation of one layer to design the annotation of another layer(s) both conceptually and in a form of a pre-annotation procedure or annotation checking rules. (ii) A multilayer annotation scheme presents a reliable ground for corpus studies based on features across the layers. These aspects are demonstrated on the case of the Prague Dependency Treebank. Its multilayer annotation scheme withstood the test of time and serves well also for complex textual annotations, in which earlier morpho-syntactic annotations are advantageously used. In addition to a reference to the previous projects that utilise its annotation scheme, we present several current investigations. © 2022 European Language Resources Association (ELRA).

To recognize the potential for colon polyps to develop into cancer over time, early diagnosis is crucial for preventative healthcare. Timely identification significantly improves the prognosis and treatment outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. Image segmentation is crucial in medical image analysis for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Therefore, in this study, we present an alternative multilevel thresholding polyp segmentation method (MPOA) to enhance the segmentation of polyp images. The proposed method is based on enhancing the planet optimization algorithm (POA) by integrating operators from the reptile search algorithm (RSA). The evaluation of the developed MPOA is tested with different polyp images and compared with other image segmentation approaches. The results highlight the superior capability of MPOA, as evidenced by various performance measures in effectively segmenting polyp images. Furthermore, metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), and fitness values demonstrate that MPOA outperforms the basic version of POA and other methods. The evaluation outcomes underscore the significant impact of RSA in enhancing the performance of POA for the segmentation of polyp images. © The Author(s) 2025.

This paper presents an analysis of annotation using an automatic pre-annotation for a mid-level annotation complexity task - dependency syntax annotation. It compares the annotation efforts made by annotators using a pre-annotated version (with a high-accuracy parser) and those made by fully manual annotation. The aim of the experiment is to judge the final annotation quality when pre-annotation is used. In addition, it evaluates the effect of automatic linguistically-based (rule-formulated) checks and another annotation on the same data available to the annotators, and their influence on annotation quality and efficiency. The experiment confirmed that the pre-annotation is an efficient tool for faster manual syntactic annotation which increases the consistency of the resulting annotation without reducing its quality. © European Language Resources Association (ELRA), licensed under CC-BY-NC-4.0.

A star-simple drawing of a graph is a drawing in which adjacent edges do not cross. In contrast, there is no restriction on the number of crossings between two independent edges. We forbid empty lenses, i.e., every lens is required to enclose a vertex, and show that with this restriction 3 · (n − 4)! is an upper bound on the number of crossings between two edges of a star-simple drawing of Kn. It follows that n! bounds the total number of crossings in the drawing. This is the first finite upper bound on the number of crossings in star-simple drawings of the complete graph Kn with no empty lens. For a lower bound we construct a star-simple drawing of Kn with no empty lens in which a pair of edges contributes 5n/2−2 crossings. © 2022, Brown University. All rights reserved.

Prospect study for the measurement of the Hbb¯ coupling at the LHC and FCC-hh

This paper employs the H+b+jets signature in proton-proton collisions to explore the structure of the Hbb¯ couplings. The focus of the analysis lies in the decay of the Higgs boson into a photon pair, taking into account both reducible and irreducible backgrounds and a realistic simulation of the detector effects. To enhance the discrimination between signal and background, a multivariate analysis is employed to analyze the kinematic variables and optimise the signal-to-background ratio. The results indicate that the H+b+jets process can significantly contribute to the precise measurement of CP-even and CP-odd couplings between the bottom quark and the Higgs boson at the LHC and FCC-hh. Finally, a novel asymmetry is introduced for the purpose of probing CP violation within the Hbb¯ coupling, formulated exclusively based on lab-frame momenta.

Momentum-dependent measures of correlations between mean transverse momentum and harmonic flow in heavy-ion collisions

The correlation between the mean transverse momentum and the harmonic flow coefficients is an observable which is of great interest; it is sensitive to shape fluctuations in the initial state of a relativistic nuclear collision. The measurement of that correlation coefficient in central collisions allows one to infer about the intrinsic deformation of the colliding nuclei. We propose to study the momentum-dependent covariance and correlation coefficient between the mean transverse momentum and the harmonic flow in a given transverse momentum bin. Two possible constructions of such observables are provided and predictions are obtained from a viscous hydrodynamic model. We find that such momentum-dependent correlation coefficients between the mean transverse momentum and the harmonic flow show a strong and nontrivial momentum dependence. We also explore the effects of granularity (nucleon width) in the initial state, the nuclear deformation, and the shear viscosity on this momentum-dependent correlation coefficient. The shape of the momentum dependence of the correlation coefficient for the triangular flow is found to be sensitive to the size of small-scale fluctuations in the initial state. On the other hand, the shape of the momentum dependence of the covariance between the mean transverse momentum and the harmonic flow coefficients is found to be sensitive to the value of the shear viscosity and to the granularity of the initial state.

What are the fundamental limits and advantages of using a catalyst to aid thermodynamic transformations between quantum systems? In this paper, we answer this question by focusing on transformations between energy-incoherent states under the most general energy-conserving interactions among the system, the catalyst, and a thermal environment. The sole constraint is that the catalyst must return unperturbed and uncorrelated with the other subsystems. More precisely, we first upper bound the set of states to which a given initial state can thermodynamically evolve (the catalyzable future) or from which it can evolve (the catalyzable past) with the help of a strict catalyst. Secondly, we derive lower bounds on the dimensionality required for the existence of catalysts under thermal process, along with bounds on the catalyst's state preparation. Finally, we quantify the catalytic advantage in terms of the volume of the catalyzable future and demonstrate its utility in an exemplary task of generating entanglement and cooling a quantum system using thermal resources.

Temporal correlations of the sentiment content in consecutive sentences are studied based on a large corpus of the world-famous literary texts in four major European languages (English, French, German, and Spanish). For quantifying the related characteristics in terms of the Hurst exponents the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) is employed. The results obtained provide a clear indication for the existence of persistent correlations as revealed by the Hurst exponents significantly larger than 1/2 in all the four languages studied. An interesting result that requires a deeper study is the identified fact that in many texts the DFA indicates two different regimes of scaling and thus two different Hurst exponents. In those cases - quite universally - the cross-over occurs at the scale corresponding to about 200 sentences and the Hurst exponents at the scales above this value are even larger which indicates the presence of stronger long-range temporal correlations than those at the shorter scales. © ECMS Enrico Vicario, Romeo Bandinelli, Virginia Fani, Michele Mastroianni (Editors) 2023.
