We present a preliminary study on predicting news values from headline text and emotions. We perform a multivariate analysis on a dataset manually annotated with news values and emotions, discovering interesting correlations among them. We then train two competitive machine learning models - an SVM and a CNN - to predict news values from headline text and emotions as features. We find that, while both models yield a satisfactory performance, some news values are more difficult to detect than others, while some profit more from including emotion information. © EMNLP *** right reserved.

In this paper, we describe our preliminary study of methods for annotating event mentions as part of our research on highprecision models for event extraction from news. We propose a two-layer annotation scheme, designed to capture the functional and the conceptual aspects of event mentions separately. We hypothesize that the precision can be improved by modeling and extracting the different aspects of news events separately, and then combining the extracted information by leveraging the complementarities of the models. We carry out a preliminary annotation using the proposed scheme and analyze the annotation quality in terms of inter-annotator agreement. © 2017 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Cloud data centers consume vast amounts of electrical energy all over the world. Energy conservation in data centers has become a severe problem. This paper presents an energy-efficient virtual machine (VM) consolidation algorithm for cloud data centers. The proposed policy exploits the average utilization of each VM to estimate the expected utilization of physical hosts. Then, the expected utilization, the actual utilization and the static threshold are combined together to determine whether a host is at the status of overloading or not. Some VM(s) on the overloading hosts are then selected for migration to avoid Service Level Agreements (SLA) violations. The results of the experiment show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce energy consumption while guarantee SLAs. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

While the Internet of Things (IoT) is growing at a staggering pace, the demand for context-driven intelligence will be a fundamental factor for IoT sustainability, growth, interoperability and acceptance. In this paper, we propose an operational platform called Context-as-a-Service (CoaaS) which enables smart things and IoT silos to discover, validate and share relevant and dependable context. The CoaaS platform consists of context query engine, context reasoning engine, and context storage management system for scalable and performance-oriented context management. We demonstrate features and functionality of CoaaS with a smart city use case “Smart parking and charging for electrical vehicles” partnering with a large vehicle manufacturing company.

This paper studies non-parametric time-series approach to electric load in national holiday seasons based on historical hourly data in state electric company of Indonesia consisting of historical data of the Northern Sumatera also South and Central Sumatra electricity load. Given a baseline for forecasting performance, we apply our hybrid models and computation platform with combining parameter of the kernel. To facilitate comparison to results of our analysis, we highlighted the results around MAPE-based and R2-based techniques. In order to get more accurate results, we need to improve, investigate, also develop the appropriate statistical tools. Electric load forecasting is a fundamental aspect of infrastructure development decisions and can reduce the energy usage of the nation. © 2017 IEEE.

Massive Open Online Course(MOOC) is a new teaching mode appeared in recent years and its emergence has constituted some challenge to the traditional teaching. However, MOOCs teaching mode has both advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, both the merits and the demerits of MOOC education are analyzed. We point out that the MOOC education mode and the traditional face-to-face classroom instruction should be combined together so as to improve the teaching effectiveness in modern education. Finally, how to blend the MOOC mode and the traditional classroom teaching and further utilize the network platform to improve the teaching efficiency in several learning phases are examined.

Applications of the Poincaré–Hopf Theorem: Epidemic Models and Lotka–Volterra Systems

This paper focuses on properties of equilibria and their associated regions of attraction for continuous-time nonlinear dynamical systems. The classical Poincaré–Hopf Theorem is used to derive a general result providing a sufficient condition for the existence of a unique equilibrium for the system. The condition involves the Jacobian of the system at possible equilibria, and ensures the system is in fact locally exponentially stable. We show how to apply this result to the deterministic susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) networked model, and a nonlinear Lotka–Volterra system. We use the result further to extend the SIS model via the introduction of a broad class of decentralised feedback controllers, which significantly change the system dynamics, rendering existing Lyapunov-based approaches to analysis of the system invalid. Using the Poincaré–Hopf based approach, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition under which the controlled SIS system has a unique nonzero equilibrium (a diseased steady-state), and we show using monotone systems theory that this nonzero equilibrium is attractive for all nonzero initial conditions. A counterpart sufficient condition for the existence of a unique equilibrium for a nonlinear discrete-time dynamical system is also presented. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Android HIV: A study of repackaging malware for evading machine-learning detection

Machine learning based solutions have been successfully employed for automatic detection of malware on Android. However, machine learning models lack robustness to adversarial examples, which are crafted by adding carefully chosen perturbations to the normal inputs. So far, the adversarial examples can only deceive detectors that rely on syntactic features (e.g., requested permissions, API calls, etc.), and the perturbations can only be implemented by simply modifying application's manifest. While recent Android malware detectors rely more on semantic features from Dalvik bytecode rather than manifest, existing attacking/defending methods are no longer effective. In this paper, we introduce a new attacking method that generates adversarial examples of Android malware and evades being detected by the current models. To this end, we propose a method of applying optimal perturbations onto Android APK that can successfully deceive the machine learning detectors. We develop an automated tool to generate the adversarial examples without human intervention. In contrast to existing works, the adversarial examples crafted by our method can also deceive recent machine learning based detectors that rely on semantic features such as control-flow-graph. The perturbations can also be implemented directly onto APK's Dalvik bytecode rather than Android manifest to evade from recent detectors. We demonstrate our attack on two state-of-the-art Android malware detection schemes, MaMaDroid and Drebin. Our results show that the malware detection rates decreased from 96% to 0% in MaMaDroid, and from 97% to 0% in Drebin, with just a small number of codes to be inserted into the APK.
