Modified simulated annealing for university teacher course assignment considering socio-cultural constraints

This paper aims to address the complex challenge of course assignment for faculty members within a Saudi university, taking into account the socio-cultural constraints imposed by gender-based segregation between students and faculty. To tackle this challenge, a combinatorial optimization model is proposed, which includes a binary representation of the problem, constraints reflecting gender segregation, and an objective function designed to maximize faculty satisfaction. The model employs a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm, supplemented with two neighborhood search heuristics (H1 and H2), to explore diverse combinations. Additionally, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithm is implemented for comparative analysis, utilizing heuristic 1 for local search. Through the application of simulated annealing alongside both heuristics (SA_H1_H2), the optimal solution is achieved, resulting in a notable equilibrium of courses among faculty members. Objective 1 demonstrates the standardized deviation in workload distribution among faculty members, yielding a deviation value of 0.08. This study contributes to the field by proposing a novel approach to course assignment that explicitly addresses the gender-based segregation prevalent in Saudi universities. By integrating socio-cultural constraints into the optimization model and employing advanced algorithms, the study offers a pioneering solution to a previously unexplored problem domain. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

How to efficiently and accurately identify rice diseases plays a crucial role in rice planting and production. Deploying large convolutional neural networks in practical applications is challenging due to their complex model parameters, while lightweight networks often compromise accuracy to reduce model size. In this study, we introduce a lightweight and precise network called GM-ShuffleNet for rice disease recognition. Building upon the ShuffleNet V2 network, we integrated the Ghost module and MCA attention mechanism, adjusted the network structure and number of channels, and replaced the ReLU activation function with Mish. Through comparative experiments, the accuracy of GM-ShuffleNet algorithm proposed in this paper reaches 96.20%, which is superior to ShuffleNet V2 and other excellent lightweight networks. In addition, in terms of model complexity comparison, the number of model parameters and FLOPs decreased by 82.54% and 77.44% respectively compared with the original network. © 2024 IEEE.

The WHO's assessment indicates a rising prevalence of heart disease, exacerbated by challenges in detection and diagnosis in India due to population growth. Machine Learning (ML) is increasingly used for precise judgments in healthcare, aiming to accurately diagnose heart-related illnesses. This study proposes a Deep Learning (DL) ensemble method, combining ML classifiers to enhance accuracy. The ensemble model outperforms AdaBoost, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree, SVM, and Logistic Regression with 98.3% accuracy on a UCI dataset. Correlation-based Feature Selection (CFS) for relevant characteristic selection improves the model's accuracy, recall, precision, and f1-score. This research contributes to improved disease prediction and categorization in cardiovascular health, vital for effective healthcare interventions and outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Predicting stock prices is a critical financial activity that is frequently impacted by sentiment analysis, machine learning, and data mining approaches. This examination looks at a variety of stock price prediction methods, including artificial neural networks, graph-based approaches, time series analysis, and classic machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest. The article assesses the problems and efficacy of various methodologies, including a thorough examination of sentiment analysis in social media to enhance stock market predictions. By examining multiple research, this study provides a complete evaluation of various prediction algorithms and reveals their shortcomings, such as overfitting, non-stationary data, and the complexity of financial transactions. It helps academics and practitioners construct more accurate and dependable stock forecasting models by merging financial data with sentiment analysis. The study also discusses rising trends and new potential for further study, especially hybrid models and advanced deep learning approaches to improve the accuracy of stock forecasts. © 2024 IEEE.

Fine-Tuned Large Language Model for Visualization System: A Study on Self-Regulated Learning in Education

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown great potential in intelligent visualization systems, especially for domain-specific applications. Integrating LLMs into visualization systems presents challenges, and we categorize these challenges into three alignments: domain problems with LLMs, visualization with LLMs, and interaction with LLMs. To achieve these alignments, we propose a framework and outline a workflow to guide the application of fine-tuned LLMs to enhance visual interactions for domain-specific tasks. These alignment challenges are critical in education because of the need for an intelligent visualization system to support beginners' self-regulated learning. Therefore, we apply the framework to education and introduce Tailor-Mind, an interactive visualization system designed to facilitate self-regulated learning for artificial intelligence beginners. Drawing on insights from a preliminary study, we identify self-regulated learning tasks and fine-tuning objectives to guide visualization design and tuning data construction. Our focus on aligning visualization with fine-tuned LLM makes Tailor-Mind more like a personalized tutor. Tailor-Mind also supports interactive recommendations to help beginners better achieve their learning goals. Model performance evaluations and user studies confirm that Tailor-Mind improves the self-regulated learning experience, effectively validating the proposed framework. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. This paper introduces an innovative optimal control approach to achieve output tracking while incorporating H2-performance specifications in a specific class of nonlinear dynamics modeled by the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model (TSFM). The primary innovation lies in extending partial eigenstructure assignment to TSFM-based nonlinear systems within the framework of sliding mode control (SMC). We propose a two-step methodology for designing optimal sliding surface gains. Initially, optimal state feedback gains are computed for each rule consequence containing a linear subsystem, adhering to predetermined eigenvalues and satisfying H2-performance criteria. Subsequently, using a convex combination, the overall state feedback gain is calculated and utilized to design sliding matrix gains. The sliding matrix gains are then determined by strategically combining previously calculated state-feedback gains in a convex optimization problem. We reframe the output tracking strategy as a stabilization problem using a virtual control input and reformulate the optimization task concerning tracking state errors. This process yields state feedback gains, sliding gains, and the formulation of the virtual control input. The effectiveness of our approach is verified through comprehensive simulations, emphasizing its capability in addressing output tracking challenges within nonlinear systems. © 2013 IEEE.

Underwater images are often affected by problems such as light attenuation, color distortion, noise and scattering, resulting in image defects. A novel image inpainting method is proposed to intelligently predict and fill damaged areas for complete and continuous visualization of the image. First, in order to effectively solve the problem of color distortion caused by light refraction in underwater environments, the improved gated attention mechanism is used. This mechanism improves the local details by learning and weighting the important features of the image. Second, gated convolution automatically determines the degree of restoration for each pixel based on local features of the original image. It eliminates distractions such as low contrast and scattering, retaining more original detailed information. By doing so, image inpainting techniques improve the quality and visualization of underwater images. © 2023 IEEE.

The urgent need for early detection and intervention in colorectal cancer highlights the importance of automating colorectal polyp detection. Despite the use of deep learning techniques for polyp detection from medical images, these methods often struggle with issues such as skewed data distribution and class imbalances. In this study, we introduce PolyLite, a lightweight transformer-based model designed to balance performance and efficiency. PolyLite features a custom SegFormer encoder that takes advantage of its lightweight design, and a decoder that uses a multi-scale attention network (MA-NET) to achieve an optimal balance between accuracy and efficiency. To improve accuracy and reduce false negatives, we incorporate a reverse attention layer that effectively counteracts input mask attention during training. This refocuses the model's efforts to better learn non-polyp regions. PolyLite undergoes a two-stage training process, beginning with pre-training on the ImageNet dataset and then fine-tuning on the Kvasir-SEG dataset. We conduct rigorous evaluations on three complex datasets: CVC-ClinicDB, CVC-ColonDB, and ETIS-LaribPolypDB. Empirical results demonstrate PolyLite's superiority over existing techniques, as evidenced by its performance in terms of Intersection over Union and Dice scores. This validates its effectiveness and scalability in polyp segmentation, making complex and computationally intensive architectures unnecessary. © 2023 IEEE.

With the high demand for oil palm production, implementations of Machine Learning (ML) technologies to provide accurate predictions and recommendations to assist oil palm plantation management tasks have become beneficial, such as in predicting annual oil palm. However, different geographical and meteorological conditions may result in different scales of influence for each variable. In this research, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) were used in predicting oil palm yield based on data collected in Riau, Indonesia. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was also calculated in selecting the input features for the models, whereas normalization and standardization were used in scaling the data. By setting the minimum absolute correlation threshold to 0.1 and using standardization, both models managed to obtain more than 0.81 R2, with SVR obtaining the overall best performance with 0.8709 R2, 1.372 MAE, and 1.8025 RMSE without hyperparameter fine-tuning. It was also discovered that the oil palm yield in the previous year is the variable with the most influence in estimating oil palm yield in the current year, followed by the number of plants and soil types. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
