Differentially private transferrable deep learning with membership-mappings

Despite a recent surge of research interest in privacy and transferrable deep learning, optimizing the tradeoff between privacy requirements and performance of machine learning models remains a challenge. This motivates the development of an approach that optimizes both privacy-preservation mechanism and learning of the deep models for achieving a robust performance. This paper considers the problem of semi-supervised transfer and multi-task learning under differential privacy framework. An alternative conception of deep autoencoder, referred to as Conditionally Deep Membership-Mapping Autoencoder (CDMMA), is considered for transferrable deep learning. Under practice-oriented settings, an analytical solution for the learning of CDMMA can be derived by means of variational optimization. The paper proposes a transfer and multi-task learning approach that combines CDMMA with a tailored noise adding mechanism to transfer knowledge from source to target domain in a privacy-preserving manner.

Turnstile p leverage score sampling with applications

The turnstile data stream model offers the most flexible framework where data can be manipulated dynamically, i.e., rows, columns, and even single entries of an input matrix can be added, deleted, or updated multiple times in a data stream. We develop a novel algorithm for sampling rows ai of a matrix A ∈ n×d, proportional to their p norm, when A is presented in a turnstile data stream. Our algorithm not only returns the set of sampled row indexes, it also returns slightly perturbed rows ãi ≈ ai, and approximates their sampling probabilities up to Ε relative error. When combined with preconditioning techniques, our algorithm extends to p leverage score sampling over turnstile data streams. With these properties in place, it allows us to simulate subsampling constructions of coresets for important regression problems to operate over turnstile data streams with very little overhead compared to their respective offline subsampling algorithms. For logistic regression, our framework yields the first algorithm that achieves a (1 + Ε) approximation and works in a turnstile data stream using polynomial sketch/subsample size, improving over O(1) approximations, or exp(1/Ε) sketch size of previous work. Pre-trained language models have significantly advanced natural language processing (NLP), especially with the introduction of BERT and its optimized version, RoBERTa. While initial research focused on English, single-language models can be advantageous compared to multilingual ones in terms of pre-training effort, overall resource efficiency or downstream task performance. Despite the growing popularity of prompt-based LLMs, more compute-efficient BERT-like models remain highly relevant. In this work, we present the first German single-language RoBERTa model, GottBERT, pre-trained exclusively on the German portion of the OSCAR dataset. Additionally, we investigated the impact of filtering the OSCAR corpus. GottBERT was pre-trained using fairseq and standard hyperparameters. We evaluated its performance on two Named Entity Recognition (NER) tasks (Conll 2003 and GermEval 2014) and three text classification tasks (GermEval 2018 fine and coarse, and 10kGNAD) against existing German BERT models and two multilingual models. Performance was measured using the F1 score and accuracy. The GottBERT base and large models showed competitive performance, with GottBERT leading among the base models in 4 of 6 tasks. Contrary to our expectation, the applied filtering did not significantly affect the results. To support the German NLP research community, we are releasing the GottBERT models under the MIT license. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The worldwide risk of droughts to water security and agricultural sustainability is growing. Using Internet of Things (IoT) technology and a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier to create drought-prone early warning systems is an innovative solution to these difficulties. Better water resource management and resilience in water-scarce locations are the study goals. The IoT infrastructure collects real-time data from sensors strategically positioned over the research area to monitor soil moisture, weather, and water levels. SVM classifiers, which are effective in classification, get this large dataset. The SVM model uses data to predict and classify drought events, alerting decision-makers and stakeholders. The system shows that this integrated strategy works. The IoT-SVM early warning system reliably predicts droughts and alerts authorities in advance, enabling proactive mitigation and intervention. The system's drought prediction accuracy helps drought-prone areas achieve water security and resilience by allocating resources, managing water sustainably, and reducing effects on agriculture and people. It uses IoT and machine learning to improve drought preparation and response, improving long-term water sustainability and resilience in water-scarce areas. © 2024 IEEE.

The rapidly expanding universe of Internet of Things (IoT) networks has led to greater security risks due to the proliferation of sophisticated threats such as scanning activities, where adversaries use scanning to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in target IoT devices, which often have limited computing power and storage, making them attractive targets;to address this escalating challenge, this research proposes a comprehensive ensemble learning methodology specifically tailored for robust and timely detection of scanning activities in IoT networks, integrating a diverse set of base classifiers including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Network (NN), Decision Trees (DT), and Linear Regression (LR), with predictions from the base models combined using a Linear Regression meta-classifier into a stacked ensemble model;extensive comparative evaluation on an IoT network dataset demonstrates the proposed ensemble technique achieves significantly higher accuracy, detection rate, F-measure, precision, and Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) versus individual traditional machine learning models, and remarkably, exhibits consistent performance across different cross-validation folds, highlighting its inherent stability and validity, suggesting it generalizes well without overfitting;in summary, this research puts forward an efficient and highly effective ensemble learning solution for the timely and precise detection of scanning attacks against IoT networks, serving as a vital step towards strengthening security against escalating threats. © 2023 ACM.

The development of industrial areas is frequently thought to have a good impact on society because it helps to meet the population's requirements. However, it also negatively impacts the environment, such as river pollution. If a country experiences rapid economic growth without considering the effects of industrial development on the environment, then human well-being will be affected. In this context, advanced development is attained by a developed nation while ensuring the well-being of society. Uncontrolled and unsustainable development increases environmental pollution, adversely affecting human health. As water is essential for human life, water resources, such as rivers, must be properly managed and protected to ensure human well-being. Thus, the study conducted on the changes in the water quality of the Kim Kim River provides insights into how unintended consequences of urban and industrial development can be identified and addressed using three sets of satellite imagery data from 2015, 2019 and 2020. The study was led to identify research problems and achieve the study objectives to obtain research results. The results of image classification analyses indicate that the development area near Sungai Kim Kim increased to 50%, with 38% from industrial areas. The RMSE for the image classification is 1.51, significantly better than the minimum allowed value of 2.00. It provides an understanding of the change in river water quality because of urban and industrial development. By highlighting the importance of sustainable development and the need to balance economic growth with environmental protection, this study contributes to the development of effective policies and strategies for the sustainable development of industrial areas. © 2023 IEEE.

Edge computing is a novel computing paradigm that offers kinds of resources at the network edge. In edge computing, terminal users are connected to edge servers via the wireless network and there are various channels in each wireless link. These wireless channels are limited resource while different channel has different cost and service ability. The dynamic changes of users' status make it harder to find an appropriate method to satisfy the BPM requirements of channel deployment. With this observation, it is a tricky challenge to make a trade-off between the system cost(rental price) and the service ability(number of users). In view of this challenge, an intelligent resource scheduling method, named EdgeIRS, is proposed in this paper. In the technical sense, the EdgeIRS method can accommodate most users at the edge with a minimum cost of deploying channel resources in an online way. Its performance is analyzed theoretically and the experiments verify the superiority of the method. © 2022 IEEE.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) worldwide makes major advancements through the Internet of Things (IoT) by enabling real-time monitoring and prediction analytics and automatic decision capabilities in worldwide deliver chains. Through IoT technology integration with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain and cloud computing the supply chain solves major operational problems including monitoring difficulties and waste reduction and regulatory compliance requirements and operation leadership deficits. The implementation of IoT for supply chain management encounters major adoption barriers from high installation costs combined with security risks and operability complications as well as limited scalability capacity that affects especially small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and developing markets. The evaluation paper examines the shifting impact of IoT in supply chain management which enhances performance metrics and brings greater clarity and strengthens supply chain resilience. A scientist studied existing papers and case studies to reveal several essential advantages which include better inventory management, predictive analysis systems and more effective supply-chain collaborations. The analysis emphasizes effective solutions for security privacy and moral and environmental issues to guarantee sustainable expanded IoT adoption. This paper delivers practical knowledge alongside best practices to help organizations adopt IoT systems which create adaptable efficient deliver chains with sustainability at their core thus achieving long-term market benefits in today’s complex global marketplace.

Cryptocurrencies are widely used, yet current methods for analyzing transactions heavily rely on opaque, black-box models. These lack interpretability and adaptability, failing to effectively capture behavioral patterns. Many researchers, including us, believe that Large Language Models (LLMs) could bridge this gap due to their robust reasoning abilities for complex tasks. In this paper, we test this hypothesis by applying LLMs to real-world cryptocurrency transaction graphs, specifically within the Bitcoin network. We introduce a three-tiered framework to assess LLM capabilities: foundational metrics, characteristic overview, and contextual interpretation. This includes a new, human-readable graph representation format, LLM4TG, and a connectivity-enhanced sampling algorithm, CETraS, which simplifies larger transaction graphs. Experimental results show that LLMs excel at foundational metrics and offer detailed characteristic overviews. Their effectiveness in contextual interpretation suggests they can provide useful explanations of transaction behaviors, even with limited labeled data. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Environmental monitoring plays a crucial role in understanding the impact of human activities on our ecosystems. However, the cost and complexity of traditional monitoring systems often hinder widespread deployment, especially in resource-constrained regions. This research paper explores the feasibility and effectiveness of employing Arduino Internet of Things (IoT) modules as a low-cost alternative for environmental research monitoring. The study focuses on designing and implementing an Arduino-based environmental monitoring system capable of gathering real-time data on key environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, air quality, and soil moisture. The hardware setup comprises Arduino microcontrollers interfaced with a range of environmental sensors and connectivity modules for data transmission. To assess the system's reliability and accuracy, a series of field experiments were conducted in diverse environmental settings, including urban areas, agricultural zones, and natural habitats. The collected data was compared against measurements from conventional monitoring equipment to validate the Arduino-based system's performance. The research demonstrates that the Arduino IoT modules can effectively monitor and transmit environmental data with a reasonable level of accuracy and stability, making them suitable for various environmental research applications. The low-cost nature of Arduino components and the open-source ecosystem facilitate customization and scalability, enabling researchers and organizations to develop tailored monitoring solutions for specific environmental contexts. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and limitations encountered during the deployment of Arduino-based monitoring systems, including power constraints, sensor calibration, and data processing techniques.
