Enhancing Skin Cancer Diagnosis with Deep Learning:A Hybrid CNN-RNN Approach

Skin cancer diagnosis is difficult due to lesion presentation variability. Conventionalmethods struggle to manuallyextract features and capture lesions spatial and temporal variations. This study introduces a deep learning-basedConvolutional and Recurrent Neural Network (CNN-RNN) model with a ResNet-50 architecture which usedas the feature extractor to enhance skin cancer classification. Leveraging synergistic spatial feature extractionand temporal sequence learning, the model demonstrates robust performance on a dataset of 9000 skin lesionphotos from nine cancer types. Using pre-trained ResNet-50 for spatial data extraction and Long Short-TermMemory (LSTM) for temporal dependencies, the model achieves a high average recognition accuracy, surpassingprevious methods. The comprehensive evaluation, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, underscoresthe model’s competence in categorizing skin cancer types. This research contributes a sophisticated model andvaluable guidance for deep learning-based diagnostics, also this model excels in overcoming spatial and temporalcomplexities, offering a sophisticated solution for dermatological diagnostics research.

Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and its variants exhibit immense potential in tackling combinatorial optimization challenges. However, their practical realization confronts a dilemma: the requisite circuit depth for satisfactory performance is problem-specific and often exceeds the maximum capability of current quantum devices. To address this dilemma, here we first analyze the convergence behavior of QAOA, uncovering the origins of this dilemma and elucidating the intricate relationship between the employed mixer Hamiltonian, the specific problem at hand, and the permissible maximum circuit depth. Harnessing this understanding, we introduce the Mixer Generator Network (MG-Net), a unified deep learning framework adept at dynamically formulating optimal mixer Hamiltonians tailored to distinct tasks and circuit depths. Systematic simulations, encompassing Ising models and weighted Max-Cut instances with up to 64 qubits, substantiate our theoretical findings, highlighting MG-Net's superior performance in terms of both approximation ratio and efficiency. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. In the cloud-assisted Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), flexible and secure data sharing promotes industry processes optimization and new products-making. To enable selective data retrieval over categorized data collected by IoT devices in the encryption domain, key-aggregate searchable encryption (KASE) is adopted for group data sharing in Industrial IoT due to efficient management of encryption keys. Nonetheless, existing solutions rarely consider user revocation property and suffered from the following limitations: (i) the user revocation needs interaction process between data owner and cloud;(ii) the non-revoked users may be accidentally revoked. Therefore, we propose a blockchain-based revocable KASE system (BC-RKASE) that achieves non-interactive user revocation and trusted revoked user management. Technically, the result is non-trivially obtained from revisiting the generation of aggregate keys and key updates via secret sharing, along with re-designing trapdoor adjustment and providing public verifiable proof for key updates by public blockchain. Besides formal security analysis, we conduct extensive experiments in a real cloud environment and thin IoT devices (Raspberry Pi) using a public IIoT dataset to confirm the practical performance of BC-RKASE. In particular, BC-RKASE outperforms state-of-the-art schemes with 13.4×~15× time efficiency accelerating for data retrieval and runs more than 16× faster for user revocation. © 2025 IEEE.

The presence of class imbalance, denoting a dis-proportionate distribution of class instances in a dataset, has emerged as a significant challenge in the era of Deep Learning (DL) where models crave abundance in data. This issue is pervasive in various real-world applications, where certain classes exhibit limited data representation. This problem is frequently encountered when dealing with image data, which exhibits an imbalanced distribution, with one class significantly outnumbering the others. Failing to address class imbalance introduces bias in machine learning and deep learning models, favoring the majority classes and leading to subpar performance for the minority classes. This research specifically delves into the recurrent problem in the context of image data, that is 'class imbalance'. The research comprehensively explores the existing challenges based on data pre-processing, algorithmic techniques, hybrid methodologies, and state-of-the-art solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

American Sign Language (ASL) recognition aims to recognize hand gestures, and it is a crucial solution to communicating between the deaf community and hearing people. However, existing sign language recognition algorithms still have some drawbacks, such as difficulty recognizing hand movements and low recognition accuracy for most sign language recognition. A Modified Convolutional Neural Network (MCNN) deep residual 101 classifier-based American Sign Language identification system has been developed to address this problem. There are three main parts presents in the method. The first part is pre-processing the images to remove the noise, enhance the contrast of the picture, adjust the contrast level and smoothen the picture using various filters. The second part is the segmentation, and it’s used to partition the image using a modified canny edge detection method by removing all weak edges present in the image. Finally, classification will be done using the Modified CNN deep residual 101 classifiers. By classifying the image, the American Sign Language is accurately identified. This process is conducted through images. The outcome shows that the suggested approach has a 0.97% accuracy and a 0.05% False Positive Rate. Other CNN architectures such as resNet 50 and resNet 18 reached 0.90% and 0.80% accuracy, respectively, which is lower than our proposed method. In addition, the resNet 101 classifier effectively recognizes the difficult hand gestures through the image data. It obtains high recognition accuracy for 36 signs is 0 to 9 numbers and a to z alphabets from American Sign Language. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) entity accounts for 10 to 15% of all strokes and is associated with a higher mortality rate ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Causes of ICH are divided into primary, and secondary, including vascular malformation and tumorous. Primary ICH accounts for approximately 80% of all ICH cases. Vascular anomalies rank as the second most common cause of spontaneous ICH overall. Furthermore, hemorrhage resulting from brain tumors can occur in up to 10% of all primary or metastatic tumors. Early recognizing of these three causes of bleeding is critical for clinicians in precise diagnosis, effective treatment management, and helps avoid delayed diagnosis. We proposed a radiomics approach for classifying multiple causes of acute ICH as vascular malformation, tumorous, and primary-related hematoma. Non-contrast brain computed tomography with clinical features was used as input. The regions of both hematoma and perihematomal edema were delineated by using manual segmentation approach. Four feature selection methods were adopted. Also, three classification models were investigated in this study. The results showed that using the features selected by F-value applied with SVM classifier outperformed the other models, achieving weighted average accuracy (± SD) of 0.84 (± 0.07). Additionally, the model demonstrated average sensitivity and positive predictive value of 0.84 (± 0.06) and 0.86 (± 0.05), respectively. We also evaluate the overall performance of discriminating each class from the rest using AUC. The result suggested that our proposed model achieved the weighted average AUC of 0.90. Our proposed method highlights the potential in identifying multiple causes of acute and nontraumatic ICH, which has not been previously explored. © 2023 IEEE.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) has immense potential for enhancing grid reliability and security through its participation in the electricity market. BESS often seeks various revenue streams by taking part in multiple markets to unlock its full potential, but effective algorithms for joint-market participation under price uncertainties are insufficiently explored in the existing research. To bridge this gap, we develop a novel BESS joint bidding strategy that utilizes deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to bid in the spot and contingency frequency control ancillary services (FCAS) markets. Our approach leverages a transformer-based temporal feature extractor to effectively respond to price fluctuations in seven markets simultaneously and helps DRL learn the best BESS bidding strategy in joint-market participation. Additionally, unlike conventional 'black-box' DRL model, our approach is more interpretable and provides valuable insights into the temporal bidding behavior of BESS in the dynamic electricity market. We validate our method using realistic market prices from the Australian National Electricity Market. The results show that our strategy outperforms benchmarks, including both optimization-based and other DRL-based strategies, by substantial margins. Our findings further suggest that effective temporal-aware bidding can significantly increase profits in the spot and contingency FCAS markets compared to individual market participation. © 2023 IEEE.

Recommender systems play an essential role in decision-making in the information age by reducing information overload via retrieving the most relevant information in various applications. They also present great opportunities and challenges for business, government, education, and other fields. The cold start problem is a significant issue in these systems. If recommender systems fail to provide satisfactory personalized recommendations for new users, the user’s trust can easily be lost. Hence, in this paper, using co-clustering and utilizing user demographic information and the behavioral history of users, a solution to this critical issue for recommending movies is introduced. In the proposed method, in addition to dealing with the problem of relative cold start, the problem of absolute cold start is also addressed. The proposed method was evaluated via two RMSE and MAE criteria, which accordingly has achieved 0.85 and 0.49 on the Movielens dataset and 1.05 and 0.6 on the EachMovie dataset, respectively, according to the number of comments that Cold Start users have registered. Moreover, it achieved 0.9 and 0.55 on the Movielens dataset and 1.42 and 0.89 on the EachMovie dataset, respectively, according to the number of registered comments for the cold start items. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Causal Feature Learning (CFL) infers macro-level causes (e.g., an aggregation of pixels in a traffic light image) from micro-level data (e.g., pixels of the image) by clustering the predicted probabilities of effect states (e.g., state of the traffic light). The current method for CFL uses a two-step procedure. First, a classifier for the effect states is trained, and afterwards, the predicted effect state probabilities are clustered. With CaFe DBSCAN, we present a novel density-based clustering method that conducts CFL directly by estimating conditional probabilities during clustering. To this end, we introduce the notion of clustering regions with similar conditional probabilities of the effect states given their micro-level data points. Our single-step approach has the following benefits: (1) CaFe DBSCAN introduces a comprehensive approach to Causal Feature Learning. Unlike existing methods, CaFe DBSCAN uses a probabilistic framework and does not require separate classification and clustering steps implemented by different algorithms relying on various assumptions, parameter settings, and optimization goals. (2) We do not need to train and tune a classifier first, hence the algorithm is more runtime-efficient than the current approach. (3) Due to the properties of density-based clustering algorithms, CaFe DBSCAN is robust against noise and outliers, which leads to purer clusters. (4) Our algorithm automatically infers a reasonable number of clusters, i.e., macro-level causes. We demonstrate the benefits of CaFe DBSCAN on synthetic and real-world data. © 2023 IEEE.

Learning management systems (LMS) generate large amounts of real-time data which has the potential to provide valuable insights. Hadoop MapReduce is a scalable framework that is designed to handle such data. This paper presents a system architecture that integrates Hadoop MapReduce into Moodle, a popular LMS, for analyzing academic data. The implementation of the architecture allows users to generate a variety of reports from student attendance logs through a Moodle plugin which utilizes the Hadoop cluster for processing data. Users such as lecturers can then utilize these reports to identify which students do and do not engage in which courses as well as monitor their eligibility for exams. The use of Hadoop MapReduce provides high performance computing (HPC) capabilities that offer distributed parallel processing and economical scalability by means of adding commodity nodes to the cluster. © 2024 IEEE.
