Causal additive models have been employed as tractable yet expressive frameworks for causal discovery involving hidden variables. State-of-the-art methodologies suggest that determining the causal relationship between a pair of variables is infeasible in the presence of an unobserved backdoor or an unobserved causal path. Contrary to this assumption, we theoretically show that resolving the causal direction is feasible in certain scenarios by incorporating two novel components into the theory. The first component introduces a novel characterization of regression sets within independence between regression residuals. The second component leverages conditional independence among the observed variables. We also provide a search algorithm that integrates these innovations and demonstrate its competitive performance against existing methods. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper evaluates the prediction of heart attacks with a fuzzy rule-based system (FRBS). Since heart disease is the world's leading cause of death, precise prediction models are crucial for prevention and early intervention. With its reputation for managing imprecise and ambiguous data, fuzzy logic presents a viable method for raising prediction accuracy in medical diagnostics. In order to capture the complexity and unpredictability of cardiovascular risk variables, fuzzy rules are used in this work to investigate the creation and assessment of a fuzzy rule-based system (FRBS) for heart attack prediction. The efficacy and dependability of the FRBS in identifying those at high risk of heart attack are shown via testing and comparison with conventional prediction models. The results highlight fuzzy logic's potential to improve cardiovascular predictive analytics.

AGNN: Alternating Graph-Regularized Neural Networks to Alleviate Over-Smoothing

Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) with the powerful capacity to explore graph-structural data has gained noticeable success in recent years. Nonetheless, most of the existing GCN-based models suffer from the notorious over-smoothing issue, owing to which shallow networks are extensively adopted. This may be problematic for complex graph datasets because a deeper GCN should be beneficial to propagating information across remote neighbors. Recent works have devoted effort to addressing over-smoothing problems, including establishing residual connection structure or fusing predictions from multi-layer models. Because of the indistinguishable embeddings from deep layers, it is reasonable to generate more reliable predictions before conducting the combination of outputs from various layers. In light of this, we propose an Alternating Graph-regularized Neural Network (AGNN) composed of Graph Convolutional Layer (GCL) and Graph Embedding Layer (GEL). GEL is derived from the graph-regularized optimization containing Laplacian embedding term, which can alleviate the over-smoothing problem by periodic projection from the low-order feature space onto the high-order space. With more distinguishable features of distinct layers, an improved Adaboost strategy is utilized to aggregate outputs from each layer, which explores integrated embeddings of multi-hop neighbors. The proposed model is evaluated via a large number of experiments including performance comparison with some multi-layer or multi-order graph neural networks, which reveals the superior performance improvement of AGNN compared with state-of-the-art models. As one of the largest exporters in the world, cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) production in Indonesia provides an important contribution to the plantation sector that can, directly and indirectly, attribute to the national economic development. However, recent data shows a decline in cocoa productivity in Indonesia. This is arguably caused by various factors, including poor agricultural management and practices in cocoa plantations, that may lead to lower fertility in the soil and an increased risk of diseases and pests. Potassium deficiency is a major contributing factor to the low soil fertility that affects cocoa yields. Therefore, in this work, we implement an application with an expert system utilizing the forward chaining method to detect potassium deficiency in cocoa plants and then give a fertilization-based recommendation based on the plants' condition. The system employs a set of rules to identify symptoms related to the deficiency on the sample photo of a cocoa leaf according to the channels of red, green, and blue of the image. The sample images of cocoa leaves are submitted to the application with an easy-To-use interface that can show the scanning result and proceed to display the suggested quantity of fertilizers to prevent potassium deficiency. Implementing the system can contribute constructive impacts to improve current practices in the overall cropping system of cocoa plants. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

We present a provenance model for the generic workflow of numerical Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, which constitute an important component of particle physics research. These calculations are carried out on the largest supercomputers worldwide with data in the multi-PetaByte range being generated and analyzed. In the Lattice QCD community, a custom metadata standard (QCDml) that includes certain provenance information already exists for one part of the workflow, the so-called generation of configurations. In this paper, we follow the W3C PROV standard and formulate a provenance model that includes both the generation part and the so-called measurement part of the Lattice QCD workflow. We demonstrate the applicability of this model and show how the model can be used to answer some provenance-related research questions. However, many important provenance questions in the Lattice QCD community require extensions of this provenance model. Psychological disorders are considered chronic illnesses that affect a wide range of populations. Some studies in the United States indicate that one in every eight individuals is affected by a psychological disorder. Additionally, individuals with a psychological disorder often have an impact on the nature of the lives of those around them. It is beneficial to detect the illness in its early stages to increase the likelihood of recovery. In this research, thirteen classification algorithms are used. Each algorithm has an interesting approach. It can be used to analyze several datasets where three datasets specific to Psychiatric patients were selected. The datasets have been chosen from UCI Machine Learning Repository. The datasets were re-analyzed after only 50% of the characteristics were approved after being evaluated by the several feature selection techniques. The main objective of this research is to find the best classifier and feature selection strategy in analyzing datasets of Psychiatric patients. After conducting numerous comparisons, it became evident that, the best classifier for the Autism-Adult-data dataset are Bagging and Random Forest. As for the best learning strategy, it was found to be Functions and Trees, the best feature selection was obtained using Symmetrical Uncourt Attribute Evaluation. Both IBK and KStar classifier proved to be the best classifier for the Parkinson's dataset, Lazy demonstrated to be the most effective learning strategy, Correlation Attribute Evaluation technique yielded the best feature selection. Logistic emerged as the best classifier for planning-relax dataset, the best learning strategy was Bayes, the best feature selection was found to be Symmetrical Uncert Feature Selection.

Various deep learning techniques have been employed to diagnose dental caries using X-ray images. In this study, we utilized deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transfer learning models such as Visual Geometry Group (VGG16), VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3, to identify dental caries in periapical radiographs. The traditional CNN model comprises three sets of 2D convolutional layers, followed by an activation layer, a max-pooling layer, a flatten layer, one dense layer, another activation layer, dropout, another dense layer, and a final activation layer. For the VGG models, ResNet50, and Inception V3, the top convolutional layers were frozen to prevent retraining of the model, with only the last layers trained to produce the required output. The accuracy achieved by CNN, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3 was 90%, 96%, 73%, 70%, and 73%, respectively. VGG16 exhibited the highest accuracy among the models. Hyperparameters were carefully selected using a grid search approach, and the results were validated using the Shuffle-Split-Cross (SSC) validation method. These findings underscore the effectiveness of transfer learning in analyzing medical images, particularly in the diagnosis of dental caries. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

There is a high similarity between the signs and symptoms of patients with Alzheimer and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Although several attempts have been made to differentiate these two groups of patients by decoding the fluctuation of their electroencephalogram (EEG), the achieved results are not yet promising. To increase the differentiation rate, in this study, 14 patients with Alzheimer from 13 patients with MCI have been voluntarily enrolled while their EEG signals are recorded in presence of visual stimuli. To suppress the disrupting artifacts and noises (e.g., eye-blink and movement artefact) from the recorded EEGs, independent component analysis is applied. Next, the visual evoke potential (VEP) patterns are extracted by synchronous averaging and then multi-linear principal component analysis (MPCA) is applied to elicit discriminative features from VEPs of the patients. After feature extraction by MPCA, the reduced feature vectors of both groups are applied to a nearest neighbor classifier, leading to 77.35% differentiation accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

A Genetic Algorithm Based on Deep Q-learning in Optimization of Remote Sensing data Discretization

Feature discretization can improve the processing efficiency of remote sensing big data. However, the distribution of target attribute values is often difficult to ascertain, and there are complex correlations between features, making it extremely difficult to obtain an optimal discretization scheme for remote sensing data. Although feature discretization methods based on evolutionary models can achieve some considerable results, it is difficult to formulate appropriate strategies without prior knowledge as guidance, which makes searching in multidimensional space inefficient and prone to falling into local optima. Therefore, we propose a genetic algorithm based on deep Q-learning (DQLGA) to optimize the discretization scheme of remote sensing data. First, we design a state set in the crossover and mutation stages by balancing the global and local search capabilities of genetic operators to obtain an accurate mapping of states in high-dimensional feature space. Then, we simulate the variation pattern of the optimal discretization scheme by analyzing the distribution of all individuals in the population during the evolution process to construct a reasonable adaptive reward function in reinforcement learning model. Finally, we introduce a pair of deep Q-networks with the same structure by treating the calculation of Q-values as a function fitting problem to fulfil an efficient updating of massive Q-values in state transition. We compare DQLGA with state-of-the-art feature discretization methods on remote sensing data. The experimental results indicate that DQLGA significantly improves the search efficiency of feature discretization methods based on evolutionary models, achieving higher classification accuracy while further reducing the number of breakpoints. © 2024 IEEE.

Approximating the Graph Edit Distance with Compact Neighborhood Representations

The graph edit distance is used for comparing graphs in various domains. Due to its high computational complexity it is primarily approximated. Widely-used heuristics search for an optimal assignment of vertices based on the distance between local substructures. While faster ones only consider vertices and their incident edges, leading to poor accuracy, other approaches require computationally intense exact distance computations between subgraphs. Our new method abstracts local substructures to neighborhood trees and compares them using efficient tree matching techniques. This results in a ground distance for mapping vertices that yields high quality approximations of the graph edit distance. By limiting the maximum tree height, our method supports steering between more accurate results and faster execution. We thoroughly analyze the running time of the tree matching method and propose several techniques to accelerate computation in practice. We use compressed tree representations, recognize redundancies by tree canonization and exploit them via caching. Experimentally we show that our method provides a significantly improved trade-off between running time and approximation quality compared to existing state-of-the-art approaches.
