The methanol synthesis from syngas derived through dry reforming of biogas was studied using an Aspen HYSYS simulator. Studies revealed that hydrocarbon reforming is a practical approach to produce energy-efficient renewable fuels. In this simulation study, an initiative was made to utilize biogas for renewable methanol production using Aspen HYSYS simulator. In the biogas dry reforming process, it was observed that the reactant (CH4 and CO2) conversions are largely favoured at elevated temperature (900°C) and ambient pressure (1 bar). Moreover, at optimal parametric conditions, i.e., 200°C (temperature) and 100 bar (pressure), the methanol production rate of 24.7 kg/h was assessed. However, the variation in syngas product distribution was observed w.r.t. temperature and pressure in the water gas shift reactor. Hence, based on the above observations, it can be stated that the biogas-to-methanol process is eco-friendlier, and might be used to mitigate greenhouse gases. © 2022 Proceedings of WHEC 2022 - 23rd World Hydrogen Energy Conference: Bridging Continents by H2. Syngas synthesis from biogas through the dry oxidative reforming route was studied using an Aspen HYSYS simulator. This study dealt with the biogas-to-syngas conversion process's feasibility;initially, the simulation outcomes concerning O2 effects in dry oxidative reforming, followed by their parametric optimization w.r.t. temperature and O2/CH4 ratio, were studied. The simulation outcomes of reported work revealed that the CH4 conversion influenced primarily by O2 injecting, particularly at lower temperature range. At all temperatures, CO2 conversion was found to be less in dry oxidative reforming when compared to dry reforming, but the conversion rate improved at 0.20 O2/CH4 ratio. Further, the CH4 recycling loop showed positive effects in CH4 conversion and CO2 emission reduction. For model validation, the simulated outcomes were compared with the previous experimental study in biogas reforming was carried out using pure nickel nanoparticles. Overall, the study infers that the dry oxidative reforming integrated with CH4 recycling can be an enviro-friendly route for syngas production. © 2022 Proceedings of WHEC 2022 - 23rd World Hydrogen Energy Conference: Bridging Continents by H2. Fluidized bed gasification is considered one of the most well-known methods in the thermochemical conversion route for renewable fuel production. Several experimental studies were reported in the open literature on downdraft gasification using different biomass feedstocks. In this study, an initiative was made to assess the feasibility of co-gasifying algae-plastic waste mixtures using an Aspen Plus simulator. Simulation results demonstrated that the algae-plastic waste co-gasification enhances H2 content in the gaseous product distribution. The effect of gasifier temperature is more prominent in energy-efficient product formation;moreover, plastic loading enhanced H2 production to a greater extent. At the same time, CO2 formation increased due to more carbon conversion after improving O2 content in the gasifier. Hence, the findings can produce energy-efficient renewable fuel that simultaneously addresses the waste disposal concern. The HVAC system is one of the major power consuming equipment in buildings. Considering the effective setpoint temperature of each zone can increase efficiency in managing power usage in buildings, leading to the operating cost reduction. This paper presents the design of supervisory control (SC) for multi-zone HVAC systems that aims to minimize the total operating cost (TOC) and the thermal comfort cost (TCC). To minimize the TOC and TCC, both objectives are normalized and combined as a quadratic programming (QP) problem which can be efficiently solved. To achieve the design objective, two methods of SC are developed for multi-zone, namely, centralized SC and decentralized SC. We apply standard QP and sparse QP solvers using interior point method. The numerical results reveal that centralized SC performs better according to a tradeoff curve which TOC and TCC are lower. While both solvers give the same results, sparse solver can provide the solutions faster than interior point method. This paper demonstrates that centralized control is appropriate for implementation in multi-zones buildings and the sparse solver proves to be more suitable in the context of sparse QP problem.

The chemical industry is one of the largest consumers of fossil raw materials in the European Union (EU). Phasing out the use of fossil carbon both for energetic and material use (decarbonization/defossilization) requires the introduction of alternative processes and systems of production and consumption. One strategy that brings forward the defossilization of the chemistry sector is the use of biomass (bio-based carbon) as a raw material to produce bio-based chemical products. Our analysis focuses on the intersection of the forest-based bioeconomy, bio-based chemical production, and consumer preferences. It points out how the sustainability transition of the chemical industry changes the forest-based bioeconomy policy subsystem in the EU. Drawing on the Political process inherent Dynamics Approach (PIDA), we apply a mixed-methods research design that integrates three scientific perspectives in an interdisciplinary approach. We illustrate how shifts in forestry, the chemical industry, and consumer preferences change the forest-based bioeconomy policy subsystem. Numerous strategies and goals referring to international agreements have been introduced by the EU in recent years and new actors from the chemical industry are entering the policy subsystem. Yet, new instruments are needed and developed for the regulation of the carbon cycle and negative emissions. The study provides directions for research on the defossilization of the chemical industry through the use of forest biomass and points out potential conflicts and trade-offs in production, consumption, and regulation. © 2025 The Authors

The concept of privacy-by-design has gained considerable attention in the wake of legal requirements that software systems should fulfill. The interconnected knowledge on privacy concepts, legal requirements, and software development artifacts required to implement this concept can be a major burden for organizations. To address this challenge, we propose a knowledge graph-based Exploratory Search system to help organizations complete privacy engineering tasks. We identify major requirements of such systems and develop an Exploratory Search prototype built on privacy engineering knowledge that integrates different information sources. While still preliminary, this work serves as a foundation for future research on integrating privacy knowledge into software development and demonstrates the potential of Exploratory Search systems to support the cognitive process in privacy tasks such as privacy threat identification. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

In frequency domain, wavelet coefficient is one of the characteristics of ERG signal which is hidden in frequency-domain. This paper aims to develop a tool for analyzing the constituent frequencies and time of interest in the dog's ERG signal using wavelet analysis. We design a lowpass filter to reduce noise during the measurement of ERG response. ERG dataset was obtained for the light intensity series and their constituent frequencies are analyzed by using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The results show that, in time-domain, as light intensity increases, both amplitudes of a-wave and b-wave are higher. We can visualize the noise interference in the ERG signals. Then a lowpass filter is designed to attenuate the noise effect. The filtered signals have lower a-, and b-waves' amplitude which affect the important characteristics in time domain. Therefore, we choose to filter signal from 26ms onward, the main components are recovered, and the filtered signal becomes smoother. In frequency-domain, the peak magnitude of wavelet coefficients is increased as light intensity increases. © 2023 IEEE.

This project aims to valorize and maximize the use of Moroccan solid biomass for forest and agricultural waste. To this end, three samples of cork, olive cake, and Argan nut shell are collected from Moroccan cities, pretreated, and measured. The HHV, ultimate analysis, proximate analysis, and density are determined for each biomass in order to identify its physicochemical properties. The experimental results demonstrate that cork is the best biomass for combustion because it generates high temperatures and less pollutant emissions. © 2024 IEEE.

Self-organizing systems represent the next level of building automation and make it possible to reduce the manual engineering effort of automation systems. For self-organizing systems to be able to interact interoperable, the system components must be mapped by uniform digital twins and described in a semantically interoperable manner. Semantic interoperability is implemented in the current research approach of Industrie 4.0 through homogeneous semantics. However, given the large number of different manufacturers of technical components, agreement on uniform semantics seems unlikely. This paper presents a method that extends the Industrie 4.0 approach to heterogeneous semantics. Semantic interoperability is realized through the automated mapping of heterogeneous vocabularies to target semantics. Models from the artificial intelligence sub-field natural language processing are used for automated mapping. In this paper, existing models of natural language processing are compared with each other in terms of their mapping accuracy. A dataset based on the ECLASS standard is being developed as a basis for the comparison. This dataset is also being used to create new models that are fine-tuned to the target vocabulary. The results show that the mapping accuracy of existing approaches improves through fine-tuning by an average of 7.5% up to 93%. In addition to the improvement through fine-tuning, this work analyses the influence of the model size on the mapping accuracy by using large language models. Moreover, it examines the integration of structured knowledge in the form of knowledge graphs.
