Techno-economic assessment for bio coal production from brewers spent grain

Tons of organic wastes are being generated from household, domestic and industrial waste. This waste if left untreated results in the emission of greenhouses gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, in overall resulting in climate change effects. On the other hand, the organic waste provides a valuable source of raw material for the production of bio coal, which is green and is renewable. In this study, brewery waste was converted to bio coal using the hydrothermal carbonization technology. Bio coal with a heating value of 26.1 MJ/kg was then produced. An economic assessment indicated that a total capital investment of USD 7.58 million is required for a plant that produces 69 tons/day. The production cost is USD 190.60 per tonne;the selling price was pegged at USD 200.00 which is less than the market value of fossil coal by USD10.00. The net present value of utilising brewery waste as a raw material in bio coal production was positive;with a payback period of 4.62 years and a 21.7% return on investment. © 2022

The exponential growth of academic publications has made scholarly research recommender systems indispensable tools for researchers. These systems rely on diverse evaluation metrics to assess their effectiveness and relevance. This paper provides a comprehensive review and analysis of these metrics, categorizing them into accuracy, ranking, diversity, user-centric, coverage, temporal, and computational metrics. By employing a mixed-methods approach, combining systematic literature review and empirical analysis, we identify the prevalence and application of these metrics across various scholarly domains such as literature, conferences, and reviewers. Our findings highlight the widespread use of traditional metrics like precision, recall, and Fl-score, while emphasizing the growing importance of novel metrics such as unexpectedness and serendipity, especially in literature and conference recommendations. We also underscore the domain-specific nature of metric selection, with user-centric evaluations more prominent in literature recommendations, and ranking-focused metrics dominant in conference and reviewer recommendations. Furthermore, the study reveals a significant gap in the use of temporal and computational metrics, suggesting key areas for future research. This review offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners, guiding them in metric selection and highlighting potential directions for enhancing the effectiveness, adaptability, and user satisfaction of scholarly recommender systems.

The present study aims at the energy, exergetic, exergoeconomic, exergoenvironmental analysis of a hybrid solar-geothermal power plant. In addition, the emergy-based approach based on exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analysis has been performed. Genetic programming and artificial neural networks have been used to generate correlations for objective functions to reduce computational time. Advanced exergy, exergoeconomic, and exergoenvironmental analyses have been done to evaluate the system better based on exogenous/endogenous and avoidable/unavoidable parts of exergy destruction. Thermodynamic simulations have been verified with high accuracy with PetroSIM software and reference data. Results analysis show that the proposed cycle produces about 59.2 MW of net power. © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The province of Saskatchewan in Canada has two of the largest CCUS projects in the world - the Weyburn CO2-EOR flood and the Aquistore Deep Saline CO2 Storage Project. Learnings from these operations have powered significant research in capture, storage, and (inadvertently) geothermal energy production. This work will examine how these commercial operations have fostered important research into solvents for less expensive capture technologies, and reservoir characterization and monitoring that has enhanced CO2 storage while simultaneously enhancing geothermal production. The 23-year history of CO2 EOR and deep saline storage in Saskatchewan has led to a material advantage for research groups in the province - both in the areas of CO2 capture research, and CO2 deep geological storage. The SaskPower Boundary Dam Capture Facility, and the Aquistore site have both facilitated R&D programs at Saskatchewan's universities and research organizations into reactive solvent capture technologies, and at PTRC in novel measurement, monitoring and verification tools. The accumulated data from those two industrial scale projects (capture and storage) have facilitated unique findings worth sharing with other planned CCS projects now in development. Over 30 different kinds of measurement, monitoring and verification technologies for storage have been examined and compared at the Aquistore Deep Saline Storage Project. The results on plume monitoring and surveillance, using both DAS and DTS (fibre optic) deployment has shown a surprising repeatability of results as compared to the site's permanent geophone array. Novel deep fluid sampling to examine brine-CO2 interactions, and ongoing extensive sometimes surprising data related to second-by-second injection at the wellhead has revealed salt precipitation and pressure data that is crucial for planned projects globally, particularly those that may experience stop-and-start injection regimes. A sustainable biosorbent, silver nanoparticles-decorated coffee-ground waste (CWAg), was synthesized through a simple in-situ reduction method. CWAg is extensively characterized via SEM–EDX, PZC, FTIR, XRD, HR-TEM, and XPS analyses. The biosorbent was tested to remove chromium (Cr(VI)) and methylene blue (MB) from wastewater, and its antibacterial properties was evaluated. CWAg demonstrated efficient sorption efficiencies, achieving ⁓149.9 mg/g at 323 K and pH: 2.0 for Cr(VI) and ⁓113.4 mg/g at 293 K and pH: 6.0 for MB, at a biosorbent dose of 1 g/L. The equilibration times were 90 and 120 min for Cr(VI) and MB, with half-sorption times (tHST) of 9.2 and 13.9 min, respectively. The sorption mechanisms were successfully fitted with Sips isotherm and Pseudo-second-order models. Simultaneous sorption of MB and Cr(VI) at pH 2.0 exhibited antagonism, while a synergistic effect was observed at pH 6.0. Desorption and regeneration were achieved using NaOH and HCl solutions for Cr(VI) and MB, respectively. The efficiencies were just reduced by 9–13%. Finally, CWAg exhibited remarkable effectiveness for removing Cr(VI) from complex tannery effluent. Moreover, CWAg demonstrated positive antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, surpassing raw coffee-ground waste, underscoring the significant role of silver nanoparticles in enhancing bacterial inhibition. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In today's high-tech world, robots are increasingly used in industry and human assistance, raising safety concerns. This paper proposes a Reachability-based Trajectory Design (RTD) method to ensure safe robot motion. By computing the robot's Forward Reachable Set (FRS), a safe trajectory is chosen for the robot to follow. This approach enhances robot safety and reliability, making them more applicable across industries. Offline RTD and FRS calculations combined with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) further improve navigation, motion planning, and control precision. This unique combination significantly improves robot operations, ensuring safety and efficiency. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The chemical industry is one of the largest consumers of fossil raw materials in the European Union (EU). Phasing out the use of fossil carbon both for energetic and material use (decarbonization/defossilization) requires the introduction of alternative processes and systems of production and consumption. One strategy that brings forward the defossilization of the chemistry sector is the use of biomass (bio-based carbon) as a raw material to produce bio-based chemical products. Our analysis focuses on the intersection of the forest-based bioeconomy, bio-based chemical production, and consumer preferences. It points out how the sustainability transition of the chemical industry changes the forest-based bioeconomy policy subsystem in the EU. Drawing on the Political process inherent Dynamics Approach (PIDA), we apply a mixed-methods research design that integrates three scientific perspectives in an interdisciplinary approach. We illustrate how shifts in forestry, the chemical industry, and consumer preferences change the forest-based bioeconomy policy subsystem. Numerous strategies and goals referring to international agreements have been introduced by the EU in recent years and new actors from the chemical industry are entering the policy subsystem. Yet, new instruments are needed and developed for the regulation of the carbon cycle and negative emissions. The study provides directions for research on the defossilization of the chemical industry through the use of forest biomass and points out potential conflicts and trade-offs in production, consumption, and regulation. © 2025 The Authors

Due to mostly economic reasons, different countries of the world use different raw materials in biodiesel production. Since the fatty acid distribution of the raw material used in biodiesel production remains almost the same during the transesterification reaction, the biodiesel raw material has a critical effect on the fuel properties of the obtained biodiesel. Therefore, the Physico-chemical properties of biodiesel fuels produced from different raw materials will be different. Among many different fuel properties, one of the most critical is the cetane number of the fuel. The cetane number, which directly affects all engine properties and is one of the most critical chemical properties of diesel/biodiesel fuels, is an important indicator of the flammability of the fuel. Ignition delay time, which can be defined as the time interval between the start of fuel injection and the start of combustion, decreases with increasing cetane number, thus limiting the rapid increase in in-cylinder pressure and temperature values. The cetane number of a fuel is measured using a cetane engine. However, since the cetane motor is a very expensive device and the determination of the cetane number is time-consuming, it can only be used in a very limited number of research centers. Instead of the cetane number, the cetane index can be calculated with a negligible margin of error. The cetane index of a fuel is an alternative parameter to the traditional cetane number used to characterize different types of diesel fuel. In this experimental study;11 different biodiesel fuels were produced from safflower oil, sunflower oil, hazelnut oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, palm oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil, waste frying oil, and algae oil, and Calculated Carbon Aromaticity Index (CCAI) depending on the cetane index of these fuels. Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered sustainable vehicles due to low carbon emissions. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are expensive electrical vehicle batteries (EVBs) due to their expensive rare raw materials, i.e., lithium, nickel and cobalt. With increased production of EVs, authors warned of the expected huge quantity of dismantled EVBs shortly and so explored their reusability. An in-depth review is conducted, and system dynamics (SD) model was developed in Anylogic whereas origin was used for graphs. The capital costs dynamics of the refurbishing facility were evaluated and the model was validated and initialised. The analysis was conducted in three sales scenarios:1) locally;2) regionally;3) nationally. This paper provides a framework for entrepreneurs. The results indicated scenario-2 as more suitable with a maximum return on investment (ROI) (80.26%) and minimum payback period (626 weeks). Therefore, it is concluded that it would be feasible for the refurbishing facility to operate regionally rather than locally/nationally. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The home will become the most important link between heat, electricity and mobility. For instance, the concept of Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) allows to use the average long parking times of electric vehicles for energy management applications in the household. In this study, we focus on developing a simulation model in the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to explore the impact of bi-directional charging on household energy supply. Different scenarios of bi-directional charging could be simulated. For example, the degree of self-sufficiency of bi-directional systems could be increased by more than 10% compared to unidirectional *** results of the simulations show that bi-directional charging has the potential to increase the home self-sufficiency of photovoltaics energy and indirectly to reduce the load from the energy grid. It is important to say that the potential strongly depends on individual user behaviour, the possible charging technology and the presence of the vehicle on site. © 2023, The Authors.
