Internet of Things in construction industry: A bibliometric analysis

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to provide benefit and value to the industry, government, society, and academic and research groups in this digital era. This research gives a bibliometric analysis of IoT research articles from the Google Scholar database from 2015 to 2021. Based on the keywords used in the paper title and abstract, a total of 850 documents from the Google Scholar database were discovered. We employ several tools and techniques such as Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer for data visualization, and Harzing’s Publish or Perish for citation metrics and analysis. The results of this study are reported using standard bibliometric indicators such as publishing trends, authorship patterns, co-occurrences, and top-cited articles. According to our data, since2015, the number of publications on IoT research has been steadily increasing. The top google Scholar cited per year belongs to the paper entitled “Prefabricated construction enabled by the Internet-of-Things”. The findings of this study may contribute to the body of knowledge by providing a complete trend analysis of IoT in the Construction Industry papers published in the Google Scholar database between 2015 and 2021.

Noise poses challenge to nonlinear Hammerstein-Wiener (HW) subsystem model application, because HW subsystem need large number of parameter interactions. However, flexibility, soft computing, and automatic adjustment to dynamic observation for best model fitting make it potential for forecasting nonlinear data. In this article, we adopted improved HW inference from Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm to optimize HW subsystem and to select best model parameters. Therefore, the adopted model is tested on COVID-19 confirmed reported cases, to estimate transmission rate of COVID-19 virus for period from 15th March 2020 to 29th April 2020. Model validation is carried out on small dataset, which outperforms some existing models. The adopted model is further evaluated using statistical metrics and reported best accuracy of 0.127 and 0.998 for Mean Absolute percentage error (MAPE) and coefficient of determination (R2) respectively, with best model complexity of 1.86. The obtained results are promising enough in predicting spread of COVID-19 virus and may inspire as guidance to relax lockdown restriction policies. © 2022, IAENG International Journal of applied Mathematics. Optical character recognition (OCR) has many ap-plications, such as digitizing historical documents, automating processes, and helping visually impaired people read. However, extracting text from images into a digital format is not an easy problem to solve, and the outputs from the OCR frameworks often include errors. The complexity comes from the many variations in (digital) fonts, handwriting, lighting, etc. To tackle this problem, this thesis investigates two different methods for correcting the errors in OCR output. The used dataset consists of Swedish addresses. The methods are therefore applied to postal automation to investigate the usage of these methods for further automating postal work by automatically reading addresses on parcels using OCR. The first method, the lexical implementation, uses a dataset of Swedish addresses so that any valid address should be in this dataset (hence there is a known and limited vocabulary), and misspelled addresses are corrected to the address in the lexicon with the smallest Levenshtein distance. The second approach uses the same dataset, but with artificial errors, or artificial noise, added. The addresses with this artificial noise are then used together with their correct spelling to train a machine learning model based on Neural machine translation (NMT) to automatically correct errors in OCR read addresses. The results from this study could contribute by defining in what direction future work connected to OCR and postal addresses should go. The results were that the lexical implementation outperformed the NMT model. However, more experiments including real data would be required to draw definitive conclusions as to how the methods would work in real-life applications.

Immersive Analytics (IA) is a fast-growing research field that concerns improving and facilitating human sensemaking and data understanding through an immersive experience. Understanding the suitable application scenario that will benefit from IA enables a shift towards developing effective and meaningful applications. This paper aims to explore tasks and scenarios that can benefit from IA by conducting a systematic review of existing studies and mapping them according to the multi-level typology for abstract visualization tasks, which is also known as the What-Why-How framework. The study synthesized several works to answer the Why within the context of multiple levels of specificity. Finally, the limitations and future works are discussed.

Access to the Internet and the use of new systems or programs provide an excellent opportunity for the public to open and continuous education. Although study or learning by the Internet or new networks have become more practical and helpful for students, a practitioner and educator’s attention as a channel to deliver their instruction and stimulate researchers in educational institutes, human organizations and companies is needed. All are working to develop programs and systems that could be useful for educators. On the other hand, the design and development of programs and systems need functional and straightforward students’ techniques. Many developers and designers try to create and make new versions of these programs and systems. Now a days, while making a relationship between the designing, they are designing expert research to keep pace with development. This research implements a scholarship student’s system that will include most of the services required by students to make scholarship laws easy to understand. As per the behind values of the survey examination, it is clear from understudies’ answers that they thought to have an application to help them take care of issues and need their organization slightly and quickly. Thus, the aim was reached and the system was established in Oman.

Bladder cancer (BC) remains a significant global health challenge, requiring the development of accurate predictive models for diagnosis. In this study, a new Binary Modified White Whale Optimization (B-MBWO) algorithm is proposed to address the BC problem. The proposed method utilizes circular transitivity optimization and the Probabilistic State Mutation Algorithm (PSMA) to enhance its optimization performance. The new method is called the BBWORCPS algorithm. High-dimensional and complex medical datasets pose challenges to the original optimization algorithms in addressing the BC problem, motivating the proposed modifications to the original Beluga Whale Optimization algorithm. These enhancements, including quantum-inspired mutation and circular crossing, aim to improve solution space exploration and enhance the algorithm's effectiveness in handling intricate feature spaces. Through comprehensive experiments on BC datasets, the superiority of the BBWORCPS algorithm in terms of feature selection accuracy and computational efficiency is demonstrated compared to existing optimization methods. The obtained findings suggest that BBWORCPS offers a promising approach for developing more precise and reliable predictive models for bladder cancer analysis. © 2024 The Author(s)

Since the inception of secure communication, safeguarding data confidentiality has been paramount. With the increased reliance on technology, the need for robust security mechanisms is more critical than ever. This paper explores confidentiality in cybersecurity, focusing on symmetric encryption algorithms. While symmetric encryption, particularly the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), is in wide use, concerns arise regarding its static nature. Therefore, the paper introduces a dynamic cipher, augmenting AES security by introducing a key-dependent S-Box. By leveraging the RC4 key schedule, the proposed cipher generates unique S-Boxes for each encryption key, significantly increasing security against non-generic attacks. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the proposed cipher is capable of resisting brute force, linear cryptanalysis, and differential cryptanalysis. Furthermore, its adaptability to existing AES implementations ensures practicality and ease of adoption.

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Scalable method for Bayesian experimental design without integrating over posterior distribution

We address the computational efficiency in solving the A-optimal Bayesian design of experiments problems for which the observational map is based on partial differential equations and, consequently, is computationally expensive to evaluate. A-optimality is a widely used and easy-to-interpret criterion for Bayesian experimental design. This criterion seeks the optimal experimental design by minimizing the expected conditional variance, which is also known as the expected posterior variance. This study presents a novel likelihood-free approach to the A-optimal experimental design that does not require sampling or integrating the Bayesian posterior distribution. Our proposed approach is developed based on two properties of the conditional expectation: the law of total variance and the property of orthogonal projection. The expected conditional variance is obtained via the variance of the conditional expectation using the law of total variance, and we take advantage of the orthogonal projection property to approximate the conditional expectation. We derive an asymptotic error estimation for the proposed estimator of the expected conditional variance and show that the intractability of the posterior distribution does not affect the performance of our approach. We use an artificial neural network (ANN) to approximate the nonlinear conditional expectation in the implementation of our method. We then extend our approach for dealing with the case that the domain of experimental design parameters is continuous by integrating the training process of the ANN into minimizing the expected conditional variance. Specifically, we propose a nonlocal approximation of the conditional expectation and apply transfer learning to reduce the number of evaluations of the observation model. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that our method greatly reduces the number of observation model evaluations compared with widely used importance sampling-based approaches.
