Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress. © 2024, CC BY.

Electricity price ( E P ) forecasting is vital for effective market operation, strategic planning, and risk management in deregulated energy systems. However, the inherent volatility and complexity of electricity prices, shaped by demand supply dynamics, weather variability, and regulatory interventions, pose substantial challenges to accurate prediction. This study introduces a novel hybrid framework designed to improve forecasting accuracy by leveraging both signal decomposition and deep learning techniques. Specifically, the method integrates Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT) for noise reduction and feature extraction, followed by a Multi Resolution Convolution (MRC) layer and a Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (BiLSTM) network to capture multiscale temporal patterns in electricity price data. The model is applied to half hourly electricity price data from South Australia spanning January 2018 to December 2022. Its performance is benchmarked against a suite of traditional and hybrid models using a comprehensive set of twelve evaluation metrics. The results reveal that the proposed hybrid model consistently outperforms all baselines across seasons and forecast horizons. Notably, during the spring period, it achieved a Normalized Root Mean Square Error of ≈ 4.87 % , a Mean Absolute Percentage Error of ≈ 12.09 % , and a Global Performance Index of ≈ 3.22 . These improvements demonstrate the model’s ability to effectively handle the non-linear and nonstationary nature of E P . Overall, the findings underscore the potential of combining advanced decomposition methods with deep learning architectures to deliver more accurate and robust E P forecasts, thereby offering valuable support for decision making in complex and evolving energy markets.

This paper deals with the evaluation of some definite Euler-type integrals in terms of the Wright hypergeometric function. We obtain a theorem on the Wright hypergeometric function and then use this theorem to evaluate some definite integrals. Further, we derive some results as applications of these evaluations. A combination of 19F magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the ordering of F atoms in Pb2Ti4O9F2. This analysis revealed that F atoms predominantly occupy two of the six available inequivalent sites in a ratio of 73:27. DFT-based calculations explained the preference of F occupation on these sites and quantitatively reproduced the experimental occupation ratio, independent of the choice of functional. We concluded that the Pb atom's 6s2 lone pair may play a role (∼0.1 eV/f.u.) in determining the majority and minority F occupation sites with partial density of states and crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analyses applied to the DFT wave functions. Information transfer based on precision time synchronization via wireless interferometry

The growing demand of high-bandwidth and low-latency information transfer in information and communication technologies such as data centres and in-vehicle networks has increased the importance of optical communication networks in recent years. However, complicated arbitration schemes can impose significant overheads in data transfer, which may inhibit the full exploitation of the potential of optical interconnects. Herein, we propose an arbitration protocol based on precision time synchronization via wireless two-way interferometry (Wi-Wi), and numerically validate its efficiency including the ability to impose a strict upper bound on the latency of data transfer. Compared with the conventional carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA/CD)-based approach, a significant improvement in the data transfer was observed especially in the cases with high traffic flow rate. Furthermore, we conducted a proof-of-principle experiment for Wi-Wi-based data transfer between two electrically connected nodes and confirmed that the skew was less than 300 ns and remained stable over time. Conversely, non-WiWi-based data transfer exhibited huge and unstable skew. These results indicate that precision time synchronization is a promising resource to significantly reduce the communication overheads and ensure low latency for future networks and real-time applications. Consider a curve Γ in a domain D in the plane R2. Thinking of D as a piece of paper, one can make a curved folding in the Euclidean space R3. This can be expressed as the image of an ‘origami map’ : D → R3 such that Γ is the singular set of , the word ‘origami’ coming from the Japanese term for paper folding. We call the singular set image C:= (Γ) the crease of and the singular set Γ the crease pattern of . We are interested in the number of origami maps whose creases and crease patterns are C and Γ respectively. Two such possibilities have been known. In the previous authors’ work, two other new possibilities and an explicit example with four such non-congruent distinct curved foldings were established. In this paper, we show that the case of four mutually non-congruent curved foldings with the same crease and crease pattern occurs if and only if Γ and C do not admit any symmetries. The role of Information System Design Theory in software development is enormous. With the help of design theory, developers could estimate what the system will be and what the system will do. The focus of the article is to establish the design theory of a self-service university management system. The objectives of this publication are to identify the most relevant publication that will act as a guideline to generate the design theory artefacts and to establish the artefacts which will consists of three components named kernel theories, meta-requirements and meta-design for the stated system. The system scope will be focused on enabling self-service functions. Validation will be done through a traceability matrix between the meta-requirement and meta-design against the real-world user requirement. The significant of this article is to provide an initial set of design theory artefacts to be utilization software developer in development or evaluation of a University Management System.

International benchmarking competitions have become fundamental for the comparative performance assessment of image analysis methods. However, little attention has been given to investigating what can be learnt from these competitions. Do they really generate scientific progress? What are common and successful participation strategies? What makes a solution superior to a competing method? To address this gap in the literature, we performed a multicenter study with all 80 competitions that were conducted in the scope of IEEE ISBI 2021 and MICCAI 2021. Statistical analyses performed based on comprehensive descriptions of the submitted algorithms linked to their rank as well as the underlying participation strategies revealed common characteristics of winning solutions. These typically include the use of multi-task learning (63%) and/or multi-stage pipelines (61%), and a focus on augmentation (100%), image preprocessing (97%), data curation (79%), and post-processing (66%). The “typical” lead of a winning team is a computer scientist with a doctoral degree, five years of experience in biomedical image analysis, and four years of experience in deep learning. Two core general development strategies stood out for highly-ranked teams: the reflection of the metrics in the method design and the focus on analyzing and handling failure cases. According to the organizers, 43% of the winning algorithms exceeded the state of the art but only 11% completely solved the respective domain problem. The insights of our study could help researchers (1) improve algorithm development strategies when approaching new problems, and (2) focus on open research questions revealed by this work.

In the second, fourth and fifth authors' previous work, a duality on generic real analytic cuspidal edges in the Euclidean 3-space R3 preserving their singular set images and first fundamental forms, was given. In this paper, we show that this duality extends to generalized cuspidal edges in R3, including cuspidal cross caps, and 5/2-cuspidal edges. When the singular set image has no symmetries and does not lie in a plane, the dual generalized cuspidal edge is not congruent to the original one. We construct concrete examples of these duals.
