We study the conditions under which a semigroup is obtained upon convex combinations of channels. In particular, we study the set of Pauli and generalized Pauli channels. We find that mixing only semigroups can never produce a semigroup. Counter-intuitively, we find that for a convex combination to yield a semigroup, most of the input channels have to be noninvertible. © 2021, CC BY.

The precise diagnosis of urinary stones is crucial for devising effective treatment strategies. The diagnostic process, however, is often complicated by the low contrast between stones and surrounding tissues, as well as the variability in stone locations across different patients. To address this issue, we propose a novel location embedding based pairwise distance learning network (LEPD-Net) that leverages low-dose abdominal X-ray imaging combined with location information for the fine-grained diagnosis of urinary stones. LEPD-Net enhances the representation of stone-related features through context-aware region enhancement, incorporates critical location knowledge via stone location embedding, and achieves recognition of fine-grained objects with our innovative fine-grained pairwise distance learning. Additionally, we have established an in-house dataset on urinary tract stones to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. The purpose of the paper has been presenting the evolution of concentrations for four main air pollutants in Craiova, so as to show the situation of air quality in this major city in Southern Romania, also finding the best statistical model to fit the recorded data for particulate matter with diameter of less than 10 microns transported by the wind within the urban area. In order to accomplish this purpose, experimental data have been gathered during the entire year 2018 in the above-mentioned town, by two air quality monitoring stations for: nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and suspended particulate matter (PM10). It was shown that none of the monitored gaseous air pollutants exhibited an alarming temporal variability, although some values close to the allowed limit or even beyond it were recorded during the monitoring period;however, PM10 daily average in the ambient air has been often higher than the European Union threshold, so that urgent measures for reducing air pollution have to be taken in Craiova, as well as in other developed cities in Romania, for this country to get the exoneration regarding air pollution from the European Union and for the people living here to improve their life quality. The best statistical model to fit the recorded data for PM10 seemed to be the log-normal distribution, which was found appropriate for describing the percentage of appearance for each range of concentration, this three-dimensional diffusion model being shown to be consistent with the experimental data, providing an important and useful tool in describing an important aspect of air quality monitoring. © 2019, International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. The present work retrieves cubic–quartic optical soliton solutions to the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation that is considered with five forms of nonlinear refractive index. The proposed algorithm reveals a full spectrum of optical solitons as well as hybrid type solitons whose existence are guaranteed with the listed parameter constraints. © 2022, The Authors. MENAHIA (Middle East and North African Health Informatics Association) is the International Medical Informatics Association chapter dedicated to the Middle East and North Africa region. This region is rapidly growing in terms of the use of health informatics or what has been recently coined digital health. Human health is highly affected by the health of the environment, animal health, food, nutrition, climate change, and many other factors that are beyond the biological or genetic structure of human beings. The impact of animal health and the health of the environment on people's health is an old phenomenon but recent reemerging and appearance of diseases have clearly demonstrated the link between these. The Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that almost all of us have been suffering from is an example of this. A number of countries in the region have already shown the depth and the work that they do to integrate the concept of 'One Health' in the public health surveillance system as they have described the work that has been done to capture data from databases other than those dealing with human beings. The examples that were provided to monitor the health of animals, agriculture, environmental health, climate change, and man-made and natural disasters are just examples of what countries have been registering in their databases and informing the health authorities of these changes and emerging trends. © The Author(s) 2023.

The accumulation lipid from oleaginous microorganisms is recognized as a second generation fuel. Biooil is known to as intracellular product of oily yeast utilizing various carbon substrates and converting different quantities of lipids in the form of triacylglycerols. This second generation fuel can be used to make biodiesel via a transesterification process. This study investigated the morphological characteristics of eight strains of Thai oleaginous yeasts via microscopy and analyzed the fatty acid profiling of yeasts cultured in three carbon sources: glucose, sugar cane molasses and crude glycerol in order to estimate biodiesel properties. To approach this goal, batch fermentations were used to culture eight yeast strains, Rhodosporidium toruloides TISTR 5123, TISTR 5154, TISTR 5149, Yarrowia lipolytica TISTR 5054, TISTR 5151, TISTR 5621, Rhodotorula glutinis TISTR 5159 and Rhodotorula graminis TISTR 5124 for 96 h under 30°C at 250 rpm. Result revealed that eight yeast strains contained significant amounts of fatty acids and lipids and accumulated mainly palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C 18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2), and they are suitable for the production of biodiesel. Fatty acid productions and profiles indicated that these yeast strains can be potentially used as the triacylglycerols producers for biodiesel production. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Algorithms for Solving High Dimensional PDEs: From Nonlinear Monte Carlo to Machine Learning

In recent years, tremendous progress has been made on numerical algorithms for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) in a very high dimension, using ideas from either nonlinear (multilevel) Monte Carlo or deep learning. They are potentially free of the curse of dimensionality for many different applications and have been proven to be so in the case of some nonlinear Monte Carlo methods for nonlinear parabolic PDEs. In this paper, we review these numerical and theoretical advances. In addition to algorithms based on stochastic reformulations of the original problem, such as the multilevel Picard iteration and the Deep BSDE method, we also discuss algorithms based on the more traditional Ritz, Galerkin, and least square formulations. A prototypical graph problem is centered around a graph-theoretic property for a set of vertices and a solution to it is a set of vertices for which the desired property holds. The task is to decide whether, in the given graph, there exists a solution of a certain quality, where we use size as a quality measure. In this work, we are changing the measure to the fair measure (cf. Lin and Sahni [27]). The fair measure of a set of vertices S is (at most) k if the number of neighbors in the set S of any vertex (in the input graph) does not exceed k. One possible way to study graph problems is by defining the property in a certain logic. For a given objective, an evaluation problem is to find a set (of vertices) that simultaneously minimizes the assumed measure and satisfies an appropriate formula. More formally, we study the MSO Fair Vertex Evaluation, where the graph-theoretic property is described by an MSO formula. In the presented paper we show that there is an FPT algorithm for the MSO Fair Vertex Evaluation problem for formulas with one free variable parameterized by the twin cover number of the input graph and the size of the formula. One may define an extended variant of MSO Fair Vertex Evaluation for formulas with free variables;here we measure a maximum number of neighbors in each of the sets. However, such variant is W[1]-hard for parameter even on graphs with twin cover one. Furthermore, we study the Fair Vertex Cover (Fair VC) problem. Fair VC is among the simplest problems with respect to the demanded property (i.e., the rest forms an edgeless graph). On the negative side, Fair VC is W[1]-hard when parameterized by both treedepth and feedback vertex set of the input graph. It is commonly agreed that the competence of abstract thinking is an important skill for software developers. The analysis of students' answers of our in-house developed Abstract Thinking Assessment (ATA) provides evidence that the competence of abstract thinking is an essential prerequisite for the acquisition of professional software development skills. Moreover, a deficit in abstract thinking competence of first-year students is indicated by the data. Thus, teaching professional software development skills should address the competence of abstract thinking explicitly. The question we try to answer is: How can we promote abstract thinking competence in a course on software development? This work proposes a concept to address the students' competence of abstract thinking integrated into a class on software development. This paper presents the revision of the teaching concept of the module Software Development I with regard to the competence of abstract thinking. Concepts and approaches from literature are discussed. Moreover, we present the preparation of the teaching units, the material used and how they have been put into practice. This process considers findings from the competence model, the analysis of the ATA and the literature review. Furthermore, the teaching style has been changed from a traditional approach to pair-teaching. In the end, the teaching concept is evaluated.

Background: Total-Body PET is one of the most promising medical diagnostics modalities, opening new perspectives for personalized medicine, low-dose imaging, multi-organ dynamic imaging or kinetic modelling. The high sensitivity provided by Total-Body technology can be advantageous for novel tomography methods like positronium imaging, demanding the registration of triple coincidences. Currently, state-of-the-art PET scanners use inorganic scintillators. However, the high acquisition cost reduces the accessibility of Total-Body PET technology. Several efforts are ongoing to mitigate this problem. Among the alternatives, the Jagiellonian PET (J-PET) technology, based on axially arranged plastic scintillator strips, offers a low-cost alternative solution for Total-Body PET. Purpose: The work aimed to compare five Total-Body J-PET geometries with plastic scintillators suitable for multi-organ and positronium tomography as a possible next-generation J-PET scanner design. Methods: We present comparative studies of performance characteristics of the cost-effective Total-Body PET scanners using J-PET technology. We investigated in silico five Total-Body scanner geometries, varying the number of rings, scanner radii, and other parameters. Monte Carlo simulations of the anthropomorphic XCAT phantom, the extended 2-meter sensitivity line source and positronium sensitivity phantoms were used to assess the performance of the geometries. Two hot spheres were placed in the lungs and in the liver of the XCAT phantom to mimic the pathological changes. We compared the sensitivity profiles and performed quantitative analysis of the reconstructed images by using the quality metrics such as contrast recovery coefficient, background variability and root mean squared error. The studies are complemented by the determination of sensitivity for the positronium lifetime tomography and the relative cost analysis of the studied setups.
