This paper describes results of a field measurement in which the feasibility of the external insulated house with air circulation through under-floor space, and attic connecting to ventilation layer in walls were examined in Okinawa. Absolute humidity in walls and under floor in median is 4.0 g/ kg (DA) and lower than outside air. The external insulation and the air circulation make attic air temperature lower than 30℃ . © 2023 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

Walkability–the New urbanism principle for urban regeneration

Walking should be one of the primary modes of transportation in sustainable cities, being more environmentally friendly, sociable, and health conscious. The principles of New urbanism (NU) promote walkability, creating urban patterns that support the needs of pedestrians. With that in mind, this study aims to define the relationship between walkability and NU in the context of urban regeneration, establishing the urban attributes that influence walkability in the revival of post-industrial areas. The research comes from a statistical analysis of the flow of people in Księży Młyn (Poland) and a field study from Carré de Soie (France) where urban attributes potentially determining walkability were evaluated. The study confirms that pedestrian traffic and urban form can be optimised through a holistic approach. It sets out the relationship between walkability and various phenomena, including i) social–how users behave in public spaces (the role of pedestrians and cars), and to whom the space is dedicated;ii) economic–how the attractiveness of the service and commercial offer are improving, and how real estate prices are changing;and iii) environmental–how the visual attractiveness of the place and the convenience of the space for pedestrians has improved (shop frontage and accessibility). © 2020 The Author(s). This study found the possibility of estimating the strength development of concrete during the initial curing period using dielectric measurements. In concrete structures, the strength development due to hydration progress during the initial curing period is a critical process and determines the subsequent performance. The compressive strength of concrete is typically measured by compressing small cylindrical specimens that has been poured. However, since the strength development of concrete is greatly affected by such as surroundings and heat of hydration, the actual construction sites require a direct and non-destructive measurement method for the concrete structures. In this study, we conducted basic experiments to estimate the initial strength development by evaluating the hydration progress of mortar specimens using dielectric measurements. The results showed the dielectric measurements could evaluate the free and bound water state because there was the correlation between the time variation of dielectric relaxation time and the material age. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The global economy is at a turning point when the raw material is less and less about demand and harder to obtain. Moreover, the reduction of dioxide emissions carbon is mandatory in the context of climate change. At the same time, the waste in construction and other economic areas is increasingly difficult to manage because its sorting and recycling are not yet in line with the rules imposed by the European community and assumed by each state. In the current context of the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions more and more, materials used for thermal protection of buildings must be obtained if possible from recyclable materials with low thermal conductivity and minimum energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a comparative analysis of the thermal conductivity obtained experimentally of some synthetic wood boards with variable content of recyclable waste (polystyrene, fly ash, sunflower husks, cement, polymer, etc ) using a double-climate chamber, with those obtained by numerical modeling using the finite element method. Experimental planning of synthetic wood boards was carried out with the help of the design of the experiment method which allowed a decrease in the number of experiments necessary for such investigations but with maximum efficiency on the results of the physicomechanical characteristics obtained. The results obtained by the two methods were very conclusive surrounding this material in the category of insulating ones with thermal conductivity between 0.071 and 0.107. We can say that synthetic wood obtained with variable addition of different compatible waste can contribute to more efficient use of this and implicitly to the decrease of the effect on the environment. © 2023 IEEE.

Interaction of the spatial configurations and active mobility in megacity, Thailand

Healthy living and well-being at all ages are one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Active mobility is a must as a basic choice for healthy individuals and communities in sustainable cities. However, commuting by walking presents a critical challenge in the city with rapid urbanization, leading to auto dependency rather than a non-motorized mode of residents’ daily mobility. By employing spatial configurations of urban physical elements, the interaction between its association and active mobility can be unfolded. Bangkok, a megacity in Thailand, is used as a case study for the objective assessments by generating data from on-street images and incorporating it into the analysis through geographic information systems (GIS). The finding based on the results of spatial configurations related to the pedestrian volume can then be quantified. The linkage between the physical environment—both sidewalks and their surrounding context—can demonstrate its significance in term of relationship. This information is useful for promoting compact urban development with consideration of the availability of transportation systems, especially public transport, which can lead to the promotion of healthy cities and environmental protection while solving traffic problems.

To promote the production and application of artificial aggregates,save natural sand resources and protect the ecological environment,we evaluated the feasibility of using spherical porous functional aggregates(SPFAs) formed by basalt saw mud under autoclave curing in ordinary structural *** our work,two types of prewetted functional aggregates were taken as replacements for natural aggregates with different volume substitution rates(0%,5%,10%,15%,20%,25%,and 30%) in the preparation of ordinary structural concrete with water-to-binder ratios(W/B) of 0.48 and *** effects of the functional aggregate properties and content,W/B,and curing age on the fluidity,density,mechanical properties and autogenous shrinkage of ordinary concrete were *** experimental results showed that the density of concrete declined at a rate of not more than 5%,and the 28 d compressive strength could reach 31.0-68.2 *** W/B,long curing age and high-quality functional aggregates were conducive to enhancing the mechanical properties of SPFAs *** the rolling effects,SPFAs can optimize the particle gradation of aggregate systems and improve the fluidity of concrete,and the water stored inside SPFAs provides an internal curing effect,which prolongs the cement hydration process and considerably reduces the autogenous shrinkage of *** exhibits high strength and high density,as well as being more cost-effective and ecological,and is expected to be widely employed in ordinary structural concrete.

In recent years, research has been conducted to establish a method for quickly and appropriately determining damage to buildings during an earthquake using sensors, and it’s useful to appropriately evaluate the maximum and residual displacement during an earthquake. The purpose of this study is to propose a disaster assessment method using a satellite positioning system that directly measures the response displacement of a building from satellite positioning information. In this paper, the positioning accuracy is verified when calculating the relative displacement using two movable vibration tables that assume the top floor of a building and the ground surface under earthquake. © 2024 Architectural Institute of Japan. In the context of Arab cities,this study explores the intricate interplay between cultural,historical,and environmental elements that shape their unique *** paper aims to shed light on this underrepresented field of study by employing a three-fold research approach:systematic review,a comprehensive literature review,and the formulation of a future research *** first part of the investigation focuses on research productivity in the Arab world regarding soundscape *** analysis of publication trends reveals that soundscape research in Arab cities is still an emerging area of *** gaps in the existing body of literature are identified,highlighting the importance of addressing these gaps within the broader context of global soundscape *** second part of the study delves into the distinctive features that inform the soundscapes of Arab *** features are categorized into three overarching groups:(i)cultural and religious life,(ii)daily life,and(iii)heritage and history,by exploring these factors,the study aims to elucidate the multifaceted nature of Arab urban *** the resonating calls to prayer and the vibrant ambiance of traditional cafes to the bustling markets and architectural characteristics,each factor contributes to the auditory tapestry that defines Arab *** paper concludes with a forward-looking research agenda,proposing sixteen key questions organized into descriptive and comparative *** questions emphasize the need for a more profound understanding of sound perception,sources,and the impact of urban morphology on the ***,they highlight the need for interdisciplinary research,involving fields such as urban planning,architecture,psychology,sociology,and cultural studies to unravel the complexity of Arab urban soundscapes.

A study on the effect of the "my gensai map program" on disaster prevention actions at home

This research conducted a questionnaire to 160 elementary and junior high school students and their parents who practiced "my gensai map program". The target area was damaged by Typhoon No. 19 and has a high risk of flooding. As a result of the questionnaire, it was found that the students who created the map communicated their learned to their families. And it was found that conversation at home is involved in deepening the effect. At the time of typhoon, many households were considering evacuation, and as a result of the examination, many people chose to evacuate at home. © 2021 Architectural Institute of Japan.
