Radiative cooling of the thermally isolated system is investigated in KAGRA gravitational wave telescope. KAGRA is a laser interferometer-based detector and main mirrors constituting optical cavities are cool down to 20K to reduce noises caused by the thermal fluctuation. The mirror is suspended with the multi-stage pendulum to isolate any vibration. Therefore, this mirror suspension system has few heat links to reduce vibration injection. Thus, this system is mainly cooled down with thermal radiation. In order to understand the process of radiative cooling of the mirror, we analyzed cooling curve based on mass and specific heat. As a result, it was newly found that a cryogenic part called 'cryogenic duct-shield' seems to have large contribution in the beginning of the mirror cooling. This finding will help to design new cooling system for the next generation cryogenic gravitational wave detector.

In 1926, in an alliance between the Zagreb pencil factory Penkala and the English company Edison Bell, a gramophone and gramophone record factory, was founded in Zagreb, under the name Edison Bell Penkala. In 1927 experts from that factory undertook the first remote recording of a gramophone record in continental Europe, using a telephone line. This was the third recording in the world, after the recordings in the New York Metropolitan opera house and in London's Covent Garden. This article describes the technical recording methods used, from the microphone in Zagreb Cathedral, to the gramophone record cutting machine in a studio about 1250 m away. The recording arrangement was developed by Paul Voigt, an electrical engineer from Edison Bell Company who spent the second half of 1927 in Zagreb. It also describes the development of the necessary scientific base in Croatia from 1875 to the Second World War for such an enterprise.

Automatic Programming Assessment (APA) has been known as a method used to automatically mark and grade students’ programming solutions. In order to realise APA as a tangible deliverable, a number of automated tools which are called Automated Programming Assessment Systems (APAS) have been developed and tested for decades. Basically, the need for decreasing the load of work among lecturers, timely feedback to students and accuracy on the grading results are the common reasons that motivate the need for APAS. In order to carry out a dynamic testing in APA, it is necessary to prepare an appropriate and adequate set of test data to judge the correctness quality of students’ programming solutions in terms of the aspects of functional and/or structural testing. Manual preparation of quality test data becomes a hard, time consuming, and feasible task in the practice of both software testing and APA. Thus, the generation of automated test data is highly desirable to alleviate the humans’ burden from performing repetitive tasks. This paper aims to describe the design, implementation and user experience when evaluating a tool developed to support APA as a test data generator that is called FaSt-generator . The tool plays an important role to furnish a test set that includes an adequate set of test data to execute both the functional and structural testing in APA. Results collected from the conducted user experience evaluation using FaSt-generator reveal that all the subjects had relatively positive opinions and greatly favour the criteria of User Perception and End-User computing Satisfaction (EUCS).

Innovations in MMCs are beginning to pay off with new military and commercial developments underway. Engineered solutions, capitalising on the advantages of lightweight and effective thermal performance, are proving the superiority of MMCs over traditional approaches and materials. As a technology-driven 21st century dawns, demand for better performance, productivity and/or efficiency in transportation, aerospace and industrial processes/products will increasingly require the use of these remarkable composite materials. The understanding of the interfacial strengthening mechanisms, therefore, is the key factor for optimising the properties of these remarkable new advanced materials. A method of calculation has been applied in order to predict the interfacial fracture strength of aluminium, in the presence of silicon segregation. The interface fracture toughness was determined as a function of the macroscopic experimental measurements (mechanical properties of the composite) and the microscopic modification parameters (tailoring of interface properties). The model shows success in making prediction possible of trends in relation to segregation and interfacial fracture strength behaviour in SiC particle-reinforced aluminium matrix composites. The model developed here can be used to predict possible trends in relation to segregation and the interfacial fracture strength behaviour in metal matrix composites. The results obtained from this work conclude that the role of precipitation and segregation on the mechanical properties of Al/SiC composites is crucial, affecting overall mechanical behaviour. © 2016, © 2016 Taylor & Francis.

Analytical solution of isothermal fatigue crack growth in solid cylinder

Nowadays many industries deal with components which are subjected to high loads at elevated temperatures than before due to the increasing requirements regarding weight and performance. The simplest process to check the behaviour of the material at high temperature is the isothermal fatigue (IF), by designing a fatigue cycle at constant and uniform temperature to estimate stress-strain required to predict fatigue life of the material. Generally it is assumed that the maximum temperature in the loading cycle represents the most damaging condition likely to be experienced during service life of the component. An empirical IF model for solid cylinder subjected to constant temperature superimposed with sinusoidal mechanical load applied at different stress levels is being proposed. Linear equations are developed to describe the severity of the temperature gradient, thermal stresses, and stress and strain intensity factors through the solid cylinder wall as function of time. Results show the effect of temperature can be explained as increase in von Mises thermal stress increase as a function of increasing temperature. The highest stress at 400 °C recorded is due to inherent hardness increase of the material indicated by high modulus of elasticity. The mechanical stress is more effective than thermal loading and results show that the stress intensity factor decreases with temperature, except at 400 °C (due to hardness increase). © 2016, © 2016 Taylor & Francis.

In the FANTOM5 project, transcription initiation events across the human and mouse genomes were mapped at a single base-pair resolution and their frequencies were monitored by CAGE (Cap Analysis of Gene Expression) coupled with single-molecule sequencing. Approximately three thousands of samples, consisting of a variety of primary cells, tissues, cell lines, and time series samples during cell activation and development, were subjected to a uniform pipeline of CAGE data production. The analysis pipeline started by measuring RNA extracts to assess their quality, and continued to CAGE library production by using a robotic or a manual workflow, single molecule sequencing, and computational processing to generate frequencies of transcription initiation. Resulting data represents the consequence of transcriptional regulation in each analyzed state of mammalian cells. Non-overlapping peaks over the CAGE profiles, approximately 200,000 and 150,000 peaks for the human and mouse genomes, were identified and annotated to provide precise location of known promoters as well as novel ones, and to quantify their activities.

Automatic Programming Assessment (APA) has recently become a significant method in assisting educators of programming courses to automatically mark and grade students' programming as its counterpart;the typical manual tasks are prone to errors and leading to inconsistency. By default, test data generation process plays an important role to perform a dynamic testing on students' programs. In software testing field, there have been diverse automated methods for test data generation. Unfortunately, APA seldom adopts these methods. Merely limited studies have attempted to integrate APA and test data generation to include more useful features and to provide a precise and thorough quality of program testing. Thus, we propose a framework of test data generation so-called FaSt-Gen to cover both the functional and structural testing of a program for APA. It aims to assist the lecturers of programming courses to furnish an adequate set of test data to assess students' programming solutions regardless of having the concrete expertise in the particular knowledge of test cases design. FaSt-Gen integrates the positive and negative testing criteria (or reliable and valid test adequacy criteria) to derive desired test data and test set schema. The findings from the conducted experiment depict that FaSt-Gen improves the reliability and validity test data adequacy in programming assessments. © 2014 IEEE.

Major construction and initial-phase operation of a second-generation gravitational-wave detector KAGRA has been completed. The entire 3-km detector is installed underground in a mine in order to be isolated from background seismic vibrations on the surface. This allows us to achieve a good sensitivity at low frequencies and high stability of the detector. Bare-bones equipment for the interferometer operation has been installed and the first test run was accomplished in March and April of 2016 with a rather simple configuration. The initial configuration of KAGRA is named iKAGRA. In this paper, we summarize the construction of KAGRA, including the study of the advantages and challenges of building an underground detector and the operation of the iKAGRA interferometer together with the geophysics interferometer that has been constructed in the same tunnel.
