The paper presents an integrated system for Urban Traffic Monitoring and control conceived in the perspective of a Cyber Physical Approach. Traffic actors are defined as classes of agents, each of them with a set of possible behaviors and behavioral drivers. Some of the behaviors are dependent on the actual physical structure/implementation of agents. Different levels of control can be defined with regard to the physical functioning context and the overall system will have a complex emergent behavior. At this moment of conception, traffic actors include mainly components of traffic infrastructure and respective control and monitoring units, but the design is open-system, so as to define also vehicle class.

In addition to simplicity, the DTC of the IM allows a good torque control in steady-state and transient operating conditions. However, high torque ripple is produced, which is reflected in speed estimation responses. It also increases acoustical noise and makes the voltage source inverter operated in high and variable switching frequency, requiring a high sampling frequency. In this paper, a simple effective ANN-based DTC of the induction machine is proposed. Neural networks with a simple architecture are designed and implemented in influential points of the direct torque control block of the three phase induction machine in order to improve its dynamic performance while preserving the DTC structure simplicity as much as possible. In particular, this paper proposes to reduce, on the one hand, the torque ripple and commutation frequency. Neural comparators are used to select the appropriate bandwidth for the torque and flux hysteresis controllers. Their aim is to optimize the ripple level in the developed torque and flux. On the other hand, a neural speed controller is designed in order to improve the system ability to respond rapidly to changes in process variables and mitigate the effects of external perturbations. The performance of the proposed control are tested in simulation and highlighted by comparing to the conventional DTC control based on conventional hysteresis comparators and conventional PI speed controller. The obtained results show the feasibility and good performances of the proposed control.

To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for a reference model that is not necessary restricted to the control component, but integrates the physical and human components as well. Research in human emotion has provided insight into how emotions influence human cognitive structures and processes, such as perception, memory management, planning and behavior. This information also provides new ideas to researchers in the fields of affective computing and artificial life about how emotion simulation can be used in order to improve artificial agent behavior. This paper describes an emotion-driven artificial agent architecture based on rule-based systems that not attempts to provide complex believable behavior and representation for virtual characters, as well as attempts to improve agent performance and effectiveness by mimicking human emotion mechanics such as motivation, attention narrowing and the effects of emotion on memory. To this end, our approach uses an inference engine, a truth maintenance system and emotion simulation to achieve reasoning, fast decision-making intelligent artificial characters.

ISO/IEEE 11073 (X73) has raised great interest from the research community since its announcement. X73 has several vulnerabilities that have to be addressed before reaching mainstream usage. This paper identifies an important feature the association mechanism lacks: the Manager should have the means of initiating the communication. The paper discusses the importance of this capability, highlighting several scenarios where the bidirectional initiation is required. The paper further presents the proposed solution, which is designed to be optional, in order to maintain backward compatibility. A complete scenario where the Manager initiates the association procedure is presented, with illustration of the exchanged messages. Finally, implementation guidelines are provided.

This work studies the leaderless consensus problem in networks composed of non-identical flexible-joint robot manipulators. Using standard functional analysis, i.e., Barbâlat's Lemma, it is established that a simple control law provides a solution to the leaderless consensus problem. The network is modeled as an undirected graph and the interconnection can exhibit variable time-delays. The proposed controller consists of two different terms, one that dynamically compensates the robot gravity and another which ensures the desired consensus objective. This last term is a simple Proportional plus damping scheme. Simulations, using a network with nine 2-degrees of freedom manipulators, are provided to support the theoretical contributions of this work.

This paper presents a computationally efficient method for modelling an impact of the converter drive on the power grid. The formalized variable structure method (FVSM) allows for comprehensive studies of the effect on the power grid and examining the relation between this effect and the number of drive and feeding line parameters. In order to obtain a comprehensive model along with the model of the power grid, the parameters that are applied originate from a drive of a coal-fired power station. These parameters have been determined based on assessment and estimation. The estimation process was conducted with the aid of a model that allows for the commutation of power electronic elements. The authors confirmed that the model was correct by comparing empirical and theoretical voltage and current waveforms. Harmonic content of the voltage and current in the power grid which feeds the drive are considered to be the measure of the converter drive impact on the power grid. The standard method for the reduction of a harmonic content in the voltage and current involves the application of line reactors and distribution or converter transformers. As an example, the authors determine the impact of the drive on the power grid with respect to the adopted parameters of the line reactor. This example presents FVSM abilities with regard to simulation of complex systems that contain power grid components and converter drives.

The paper addresses the problem of real-time monitoring and intelligent forecasting for indoors ecological phenomena. The process yields a collection of ecological parameters viewed as distributed time series. Data acquired by means of a wireless network of sensors are modeled by using complex algorithms in view of prediction. An evolutionary searching strategy (Particle Swarm Optimization-PSO) is proposed in order to intelligently find the most accurate prediction model. This strategy is adapted to predictors like PARMA, PARMAX, KARMA and FORWAVER, which are implemented within the monitoring and forecasting system, in order to estimate the future evolution of some ecological parameters. The monitoring system was effectively integrated in an industrial application dealing with automatic irrigation of a small greenhouse. The forecasting simulation results with real data and a comparative assessment of best predictor performances obtained with PSO are presented in the end.
