The Sensing Enterprise is a novel concept that refers to an enterprise anticipating future decisions by using multi-dimensional information captured through physical and virtual objects. The Sensing Enterprise concept is shifting focus towards a borderless enterprise, having at its core the collaboration and continuous interactions among smart objects and systems. But in the actual competitive and global business context, the maintenance of the collaboration environment through the interoperation among heterogeneous smart virtual and physical objects in a collaborative organizational environment becomes difficult to achieve. Therefore, in a dynamic context a change in any component of the networked partners affects the others, creating difficulties to sustain operating networked environment. In this respect, this paper proposes an intelligent negotiation framework as a key mechanism to achieve and maintain the interoperability between the organisations' smart objects and applications, and its validation in an industrial scenario. To allow a sustainable, flexible and generic approach towards the infrastructure implementation in global scale, a cloud-based platform is proposed for setting of the Sensing Enterprise framework.

This paper proposes a discrete-time predictive controller with constraints for variable speed horizontal wind turbines. The control strategy, implemented using discrete-time model predictive control (MPC) is optimized using a certain set of constrains applied to the control signal u(k). MPC provides an integrated solution for controlling systems with interacting variables, complex dynamics and constraints. The paper will show that with a small modification in the control signal, the degree of performance deterioration can be reduced if the constraints are incorporated in the implementation, leading to the idea of constrained control.

Repetitive processes propagate information in two separate directions, one of which is temporal and the other can be spatial. A repetitive process makes a series of sweeps, or passes, through a set of dynamics over this finite duration and when each is complete the process resets. Moreover, the output produced on the previous pass explicitly contributes to the dynamics produced on the next one. Hence they can also be viewed as a class of periodic systems. They also pose control problems that cannot be solved by standard systems control theory and design algorithms. This paper gives new results on the application of the repetitive process control theory to the analysis of ladder networks.

In the first part, the paper presents an investigation into lecture attendance. The case study was conducted on a group of 309 1st year and 3rd year undergraduate engineering students of the Silesian University of Technology to assess relevance of attending lectures, investigate why they are not attending and what could be done to change this trend, as seen from student perspective. The students have been surveyed by means of questionnaire-type surveys. Increase of Information Technology (IT) based components, redevelopment of f2f traditional lecture into f2f discussion forum preceded by online video podcasts are the most demanded modifications. Following this findings, educational uses of podcasting in supporting and enhancing the lecture is briefly discussed. New model of video-podcasting is proposed. This model is now tested, on a group of Circuit Theory (CT) course students. However this case study is still in progress, the already gained feedback from both, students and lecturer allow to state that use of podcasting in supporting lectures is very promising, under the condition that it is not determined by the potential of the IT, but rather by the way in which it is perceived by educators and students.

For the last seven years, at Silesian University of Technology (SUT), Gliwice, Poland, many undergraduate courses have been fully revised and renewed based on Information and Communication Technology [1,2]. Despite of significant modifications of knowledge delivery and facilitating of self-learning, the students' examination results are often poor. In the current stage of the Circuit Theory course transformation, the authors focus on the student evaluation of the course, and the students' opinion on perspective modification of the course;in particular, on application of various Internet tools (Social Networks, Virtual Worlds, RSS Feeds etc.) for teaching. The survey results show that our students are satisfied with the teaching quality;they indicate insufficient workload as the main examination failure reason. In students' opinion, lecture and classroom tutorials video podcasts are the most successful method of increasing teaching efficiency. The students' acceptance of modern Internet tools for teaching is rather low, the only exception is the Learning Management System (LMS). Following the survey results, the authors reject the idea of introducing more Internet tools for teaching;they will focus on delivering more video podcasts, stimulating students' activity and motivation, as well as increasing application of LMS for self-learning and communication.
