The paper describes a substantial extension of Norm Optimal Iterative Learning control (NOILC) that permits tracking of a class of finite dimensional reference signals whilst simultaneously minimizing a quadratic cost function. Motivated by practical problems in automation and control, this enables point-to-point motion tasks to be performed whilst reducing effects such as payload spillage, vibration tendencies and actuator wear. Solutions combine feedforward and feedback actions, and are experimentally tested using a robotic arm.

Characterization of radio communication signals aims at automatic recognition of different characteristics of radio signals in order to detect their modulation type, the central frequency, and the level. The authors" purpose is to apply techniques used in image processing in order to extract pertinent characteristics. To the single analysis (recognition of membership of certain frequency signal to a radio communication using its characteristics), the authors add several rules for checking the consistency of hypotheses using fuzzy logic. This allows taking into account ambiguity and uncertainty that may remain after the extraction of individual characteristics. The task has been realized in MATLAB. Multipass processes was the name used to describe the dynamics of longwall coal cutting in the early 1970's. Later the term 'repetitive process' was used and, using coal cutting as a motivating example, the development of a stability and control theory for these processes began. In the past two decades, this theory has been developed, motivated by the emergence of more physical examples and the recognition that repetitive process control theory can also be used to solve problems in other areas, to the stage where experimental verification is available to support the theory. This paper gives a reflective overview of the progress achieved in the underlying systems theory and in a companion paper the application of this theory is described together with a discussion of possible future developments.

An energy company manages power stations, handles sales and purchases of electrical energy, CO2 emission permits and other goods. The goal of such a company is to ensure energy safety of its clients and maximize the profit. The problem is complex because of its structure and size therefore efficient automated approaches for solving it are in demand. We have generalized the problem definition to account for any structure of the power stations, market data and time scope. The definition describes a non-linear combinatorial optimization problem. We have tested a number of approaches including: constraint/ logic/ dynamic/ integer/ linear programming, local search and their hybrids using prototypes with input data from a real life process. We present a hybrid solver to produce an acceptable, near optimal solution which satisfies the requirements of an industrial application. Our research is a road-sign for development of similar software for the energy industry.
