Main idea of this study was to increase efficiency of the EASI ECG method introduced by Dover in 1988 using various regression techniques. EASI was proven to have high correlation with standard 12 lead ECG. Apart from that it is less susceptible to artefacts, increase mobility of patients and is easier to use because of smaller number of electrodes. Multilayer Perceptron (Artificial Neural Network), Support Vector Machines, Linear Regression, Pace Regression and Least Median of Squares Regression methods were used to improve the quality of the 12-lead electrocardiogram derived from four (EASI) electrodes.

Generalized adaptive comb filters can be used to identify/track parameters of quasi-periodically varying systems. In a special, signal case they reduce down to adaptive comb filters, applied to elimination or extraction of nonstationary multi-harmonic signals buried in noise. We propose a new algorithm which combines, in an adaptive way, results yielded by several, simultaneously working generalized adaptive comb filters. Due to its highly parallel estimation structure, the new algorithm is more accurate and more robust than the currently available algorithms.

This note studies the problem of bounds for the Lyapunov exponent of a parameter perturbed system when the perturbation has finite average value. Such a bound is presented in terms of Bohl exponent of the unperturbed system. In particular, it has been shown that the Lyapunov exponent of perturbed system is not greater than the Bohl exponent of the unperturbed system if the average value of perturbations is zero. The obtained result is illustrated by a numerical example.

Community can be generally defined as a sub graph where nodes are more densely connected with each other than with the rest of a network. Such definition makes application of density-based clustering methods to community identification justified and natural. Moreover, density-based methods have many extensions enabling their application to complex data analysis. Therefore, the analysis of the characteristics of density-based clustering methods in application to community identification is important and valuable. The article presents and evaluates new similarity measures that can be utilised by the approaches to density-based community identification. Several experiments on real life and generated networks are performed to show and explain the differences between these measures and to compare them with other methods. The results show that the new measures improve the quality of analysis and that density-based clustering algorithms can be valuable community identification methods.

Since 2005 assessment in many core engineering courses at Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland, is performed in the electronic manner. Every year the method is modified, based on teachers' experience and students' feedback [1]. Recently, the approach to e-assessment has been thoroughly revised, based on Bloom's taxonomy of students outcomes and Kolb's learning cycle [2,3]. In particular, the authors focused on the proper balance and order of the questions, corresponding to the lower level (knowledge, understanding) and the medium level (application, analysis) of Bloom's taxonomy. A new category of assessment, called “formative towards summative” (FTS) has been designed and introduced in the 2011/2012 autumn semester.

In this paper we introduced a new original definition for the information content of a database and we investigated how this new definition can be used to analyze the quality of the design of a database. We also presented a synthesis of the existing approaches for using information theory in order to study the database domain.

Self Optimizing Narrowband Interference Canceller (SONIC) is a novel active disturbance rejection algorithm which combines the gain-freezing technique and automatic adjustment of a complex-valued estimation gain. In the paper a new version of the self-adjustment mechanism, based on the extremum-seeking technique, is proposed. To preserve the compactness of the original controller, the adaptation algorithm is designed to operate in complex domain. The resulting adaptive controller is much more robust than its previous variant.

This paper presents a new approach to elimination of impulsive disturbances from archive speech signals. The proposed sparse autoregressive (SAR) signal representation is given in a factorized form - the model is a cascade of the so-called formant filter and pitch filter. Such a technique has been widely used in code-excited linear prediction (CELP) systems, as it guarantees model stability. After detection of noise pulses using linear prediction, the factorized model is converted into a generic sparse form in order to perform a projection-based signal interpolation. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is able to deal favorably with speech signals with strong glottal activity, which is a serious problem for algorithms based on the classical AR modeling.
