In this paper we present a new constraint-based design of visual predictive architectures. An analytical study over the properties of a local model based predictor and its open loop behavior is detailed. Constraint-based reference trajectory generator and unconstrained optimization block are the new components of the visual predictive control strategy. Simulations are employed to validate the predictive technique and also to reveal the performance of the servoing system.

A test bed is developed for facilitating real time experiments with mobile robots. The setup consists of a wheeled mobile robot that moves on a platform, a computer that controls the robot and an overhead camera that closes the loop between these devices. Several Matlab routines were created for reducing the programming burden of designing an experiment. The environment in which the robot moves can be easily changed by placing colored convex regions (obstacles) on the platform. The interface between Matlab and the test bed is ensured by image processing functions that detect the environment map and the robot's position and orientation, and by functions for moving the robot. Thus, real experiments can be performed for various planning algorithms for which implementations are available. The functionality of the provided toolbox is enhanced by routines that plan the movement of a mobile robot based on cell decompositions, and a supporting experiment is included.

Locally-adaptive Kalman smoothing approach to identification of nonstationary stochastic systems *

The problem of noncausal identification of nonstationary, linear stochastic systems, i.e., identification based on prerecorded input/output data, is considered. It is shown how several competing Kalman-type parameter smoothers, differing in smoothness constraints and memory settings, can be combined together to yield a better and more reliable smoothing algorithm. The resulting parallel estimation scheme automatically adjusts its smoothing bandwidth to the unknown, and possibly time-varying, rate of nonstationarity of the identified system. It also allows one to account for parameter jumps and for the distribution of measurement noise.

Metadata integration and use represents an open problem due to the rapid expansion of data resources in a nonstandard compliant environment. The increasing need to access and retrieve relevant data based on semantic similarity from distributed, autonomous and heterogeneous sources demands innovative solutions that can offer an integrated global view over various local schemas. The framework proposed in this paper aims to achieve metadata integration and aggregation while preserving initial semantics and minimal data loss. Main problems are metadata reduction to a generic structure as well as identifying only those resources that match the crawling profile.

This paper develops a new set of conditions for strong practical stability of linear discrete repetitive processes through use of the generalized version of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma, with an extension to examples with uncertainty. These new conditions reduce the problem of determining if an example has this stability property to checking for the existence of a solution to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and, relative to alternatives, can reduce the level of conservatism. The validity of the developed results are demonstrated by numerical example. A numerical example is also given.

Operating in the proximity of humans has been a long-term challenge in robotics research. To achieve this objective, one of the main issues is to ensure safe and comfortable physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). In this paper, we tackle the safety problem at the control level. To ensure operation is within perceived safe zone, we use model predictive control, which finds the optimal control signal online, while imposing predefined safety constraints on the robotic system. The strength of this method lies in allowing the system to perform close to, or at the edge of the constraints' boundaries. In contrast to other works we consider here perceived safety;the constraints for perceived safety are derived in a competitive pHRI experiment. The perceived safety and comfort of the proposed approach is then evaluated with a second, game-like pHRI experiment. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a discrete-time predictive controller for variable speed horizontal wind turbines. The control strategy is implemented using discrete-time model predictive control (MPC). MPC provides an integrated solution for controlling systems with interacting variables, complex dynamics and constraints. The discrete predictive controller has the advantage that can be easily implemented on a physical controller in order to be used on a real wind turbine. In order to design the appropriate predictive controller it is necessary to describe the wind turbine behavior. After computing the general equation of motion in a mechanical system and other equations specific to the system a nonlinear model was obtained. For the linear model representation it was used a particular operating point. Based on this representation the predictive control strategy was implemented, tested and analyzed using Matlab simulation environment. © 2012 Dunarea de Jos University.

The paper provides a case study on the wireless circuit for the purpose of the EGG (Electrogastrography) signal acquisition. The authors present an amplifier based on the ADS1298, wireless communication module (Bluetooth) and the microprocessor unit which have been recently built. The system is currently under examination but the outcome is very promising because the amplifier input is fed with the pure signal, i.e. no high/low pass filter is applied, that is a novelty. The system presented in this paper could be helpful in diagnosis gastric disorders in noninvasive way. It could determine patients with unexplained nausea, vomiting and other dyspeptic symptoms. The unit is under clinical trials tests and preliminary evaluation indicates acceptance by medical staff. Additional advantages are the relatively low cost of manufacture and the possibility of application remotely (pervasive computing).
