For the last seven years, at Silesian University of Technology (SUT), Gliwice, Poland, many undergraduate courses have been fully revised and renewed based on Information and Communication Technology [1,2]. Despite of significant modifications of knowledge delivery and facilitating of self-learning, the students' examination results are often poor. In the current stage of the Circuit Theory course transformation, the authors focus on the student evaluation of the course, and the students' opinion on perspective modification of the course;in particular, on application of various Internet tools (Social Networks, Virtual Worlds, RSS Feeds etc.) for teaching. The survey results show that our students are satisfied with the teaching quality;they indicate insufficient workload as the main examination failure reason. In students' opinion, lecture and classroom tutorials video podcasts are the most successful method of increasing teaching efficiency. The students' acceptance of modern Internet tools for teaching is rather low, the only exception is the Learning Management System (LMS). Following the survey results, the authors reject the idea of introducing more Internet tools for teaching;they will focus on delivering more video podcasts, stimulating students' activity and motivation, as well as increasing application of LMS for self-learning and communication.

Vibrations, especially generated by mechanical systems, exhibit a fortunate and extremely useful feature in fault diagnosis: encoding information about the health state of the system that produced them. In order to decode that information, the main properties of vibration yielding identification and isolation of faults have to a priori be known. Internet-based assessment has been recently introduced into many courses taught at Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland. We have started with summative assessment (examination) and non-obligatory formative assessment. The next step was the implementation of obligatory formative assessment for some groups of students. In the paper the applied forms of formative assessment are thoroughly described. We present the method, obtained results, and students attitude to different forms of assessment. Students have been surveyed on various aspects of web-based assessment - in particular, on the methods of cheating. We discuss the range of cheating, ways of cheating and precautions to be taken. The authors' experience and findings may be helpful for teachers applying Internet for students' assessment.

Block diagrams are a popular tool for representing relationships in complex systems and became a kind of universal language, comprehended widely in engineering sciences dealing with dynamical systems. There are many software development environments (e.g. Simulink, LabVIEW, VisSIM) accepting such block diagrams as a programming language. However, block diagrams are rarely used in the field of systems visualisation dominated by custom made process flow diagrams. This paper presents a concept of using block diagrams as a tool for run-time presentation of a time-variant structure of complex control systems. At first, formal description of block diagrams is derived as an ontology, class hierarchy, and XML Schema. In the second part of the paper developed software tools are presented i.e. equation parser, Web Service implemented in a dynamic agent-based control system, and an AJAX-based application visualising acquired models as live interactive vector diagrams. Existing solutions for automated diagram spatial arrangement are not proper for block diagrams containing feedback loops, therefore presented visualisation tool, to achieve comprehendible and aesthetical layout, implements modified approach, which is thoroughly discussed.

Web-based blended learning at Silesian University of Technology, Poland, is supported by integrated elearning service called Distant Education Platform (DEP). The authors discuss general framework concerning DEP and present the ideas of DEP-based knowledge delivery. Introduction of modern technologies has changed education process significantly. The quality of courses supported by DEP has been improved, the number of services has increased and the teachers' workload has been reduced. Nevertheless, the number of courses that have been fully transformed into blended version is insufficient. There are many barriers to successful implementation of web-based learning - technical, mental and pedagogical. In the paper the authors present comprehensive list of potential barriers, and give some guidelines how to overcome them.

There are few examples of process benchmarking in the literature nowadays which allow to determine quality of tested control algorithms unequivocally. It is believed that exothermic CSTR process (with Arrhenius-type reaction), CSTB process (with Monod-type or Contoise-type reaction) and pH process fulfill such a function. However, most commonly used settings for CSTR and CSTB processes display nonlinearities which for control algorithms are not really challenging. An additional inconvenience is introduced by the high cost of a real laboratory installation and its maintenance -even when it is just a pilot plant. Tanks with variable surface area presented in this article seem to be a strong challenge for the process control. They seem to be the good alternative for the mentioned processes due to the fact that the cost of developing and maintaining such an installation is relatively low.
