In this paper we suggest how several competing image denoising algorithms, differing in design parameters, or even in design principles, can be combined together to yield a better and more reliable denoising algorithm. The proposed fusion mechanism allows one to combine practically all kinds of noise reduction tools. It also allows one to account for the distribution of measurement noise, and in particular - to cope with heavy-tailed disturbances, such as Laplacian noise, or light-tailed disturbances, such as uniform noise.

The problem of estimation of the slowly-varying instantaneous frequency of a nonstationary complex sinusoidal signal buried in noise is considered. This problem is usually solved using frequency tracking algorithms. It is shown that the accuracy of frequency estimates can be considerably increased if the results yielded by the frequency tracker are further processed using the appropriately designed filters. The resulting frequency smoother can be employed in many off-line applications. Whenever signal frequency varies in a sufficiently smooth manner, the proposed algorithm, based on a new, quasi-linear model of frequency changes, outperforms the existing solutions.

Modern detectors used in high energy physics experiments are complex instruments designed to register collisions of particles at a rate in the MHz range. Data that correspond to a single collision of particles, referred to as an event, are acquired from millions of readout channels, and filtered, first by dedicated hardware, and then by computing farms running sophisticated filtering algorithms. In case of data acquisition systems with single-stage software filtration, due to the high input rate (the order of 100 kHz), the data are usually distributed in a static way between filtering nodes. However, the static distribution determines strongly the system, and results in decreased fault tolerance. The main objective of the presented studies is to increase the system's overall fault tolerance through dynamic load balancing. The proposed method aims to balance the workload inside heterogeneous systems, as well as, homogeneous systems, where the imbalance could be caused by faults. Moreover, our research includes developing a scalable load balancing protocol along with a distributed asynchronous load assignment policy. As a case study we consider the Data Acquisition system of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at CERN's new Large Hadron Collider.

The prediction of software reliability can determine the current reliability of a product, using statistical techniques based on the failures data, obtained during testing or system usability. Software reliability growth models attempt to predict the number of defect using a correlation between exponential function and defect data. The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of a real-life product over three releases, using the Rayleigh function in order to predict the number of defects. Our paper offers two possibilities for computing the model parameters, and then we should be able to decide which is better and what can be improved. Results from this study will be used to determine which approach is best to be used.

In proteomics 2-dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) is the most widely used method for analyzing protein mixtures qualitatively. There are, however, a lot of noise and measurement biases which needs to be accounted for both in the localization of spots as well as in the quantitative measurement of protein expression. Previous techniques for denoising 2D gels are based on thresholding, smoothing and spot recognition. Wavelet transformations have also been applied to denoise 2D gels, however these techniques are typically in the frequency domain and they tend to shift spots slightly. In this paper, we improve the protein spot detection process by wavelet de-noising based on genetic algorithm.

Having solid knowledge of electronics is of major importance for a computerscience (CS) student. The means for achieving a good level of understanding, especially of the practical aspects, is an ongoing issue (in the short time frame that is generally allocated for it in a CS program). Due to the applied nature of the subject, the authors consider that a pragmatic practice-based approach is an appropriate solution to complete the technical preparation of the students. Following the general lines of this idea, the authors implemented a series of laboratory works that are designed to ensure that students would get hands-on experience with electronic circuits. The paper will present how these will introduce basic key concepts, bridge the gap between theory and practice and lay down a solid foundation for hardware courses that follow in the CS curriculum.

This paper presents a scientific news aggregator, structured as an online magazine. The content is automatically withdrawn from several online publications, available on the Internet. Instead of using a traditional database, all the information about the items posted on the site is stored in a RDF file, which is automatically updated.
