The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

Nonlinear Fisher Discriminant Analysis for binomial problems can be converted into a Linear-In-The-Parameters classifier model by introducing a least-squares cost function. However, the complexity of the classifier scales with the number of training samples, which makes it difficult to use on large data sets. A popular solution is to adopt a sub-model selection approach, such as Orthogonal Least Squares (OLS) or the Fast Recursive Algorithm (FRA), to produce a compact classifier with accurate parameters. The problem is that these methods need additional subjective choice of selection termination criterion, and inappropriate choice of this criterion may lead to an over-fitting classifier. Further, training data with large noise may even deteriorate the performance. This paper proposes a fast automatic forward algorithm for constructing a parsimonious descriptor of the nonlinear discriminant function, thus both the subjective choice of the termination criterion and the over-fitting problem due to noisy data can be avoided. This is achieved by an effective integration of the Bayesian regularisation technique, the Leave-One-Out (LOO) cross-validation criterion and the FRA algorithm. Experimental results are included to confirm the efficacy and superiority of the proposed algorithm on both artificial and real world data sets.

Iterative Learning control (ILC) is now well established for linear and nonlinear dynamics in terms of both the underlying theory and experimental application. This approach is specifically targeted at applications where the same operation is repeated over a finite duration with resetting between successive executions. Each execution is known as a trial and the novel principle behind ILC is to suitably use information from previous trials in the selection of the current trial input with the objective of sequentially improving performance from trial-to-trial. In this paper, new results on the extension of the ILC approach to the class of 2D systems that arise from certain methods of discretization of partial differential equations, resulting in the need to use a spatio-temporal setting for analysis. The resulting control laws can be computed using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). An illustrative example is also given and areas for further research discussed.

Block diagrams are a popular tool for representing relationships in complex systems and became a kind of universal language, comprehended widely in engineering sciences dealing with dynamical systems. There are many software development environments (e.g. Simulink, LabVIEW, VisSIM) accepting such block diagrams as a programming language. However, block diagrams are rarely used in the field of systems visualisation dominated by custom made process flow diagrams. This paper presents a concept of using block diagrams as a tool for run-time presentation of a time-variant structure of complex control systems. At first, formal description of block diagrams is derived as an ontology, class hierarchy, and XML Schema. In the second part of the paper developed software tools are presented i.e. equation parser, Web Service implemented in a dynamic agent-based control system, and an AJAX-based application visualising acquired models as live interactive vector diagrams. Existing solutions for automated diagram spatial arrangement are not proper for block diagrams containing feedback loops, therefore presented visualisation tool, to achieve comprehendible and aesthetical layout, implements modified approach, which is thoroughly discussed.

There are few examples of process benchmarking in the literature nowadays which allow to determine quality of tested control algorithms unequivocally. It is believed that exothermic CSTR process (with Arrhenius-type reaction), CSTB process (with Monod-type or Contoise-type reaction) and pH process fulfill such a function. However, most commonly used settings for CSTR and CSTB processes display nonlinearities which for control algorithms are not really challenging. An additional inconvenience is introduced by the high cost of a real laboratory installation and its maintenance -even when it is just a pilot plant. Tanks with variable surface area presented in this article seem to be a strong challenge for the process control. They seem to be the good alternative for the mentioned processes due to the fact that the cost of developing and maintaining such an installation is relatively low.

This paper presents self-stabilizing statistical algorithm for validation and optimisation of communication channel. There is usually a need to transmit data describing some industrial process for purpose of archiving and/or remote evaluation of system performance quality. The communication selfstabilization is possible in multi-agent system (MAS) when certain data loss for remote user is acceptable. Communication overload especially in case of wireless transmission may cause unpredictable data loss. System may self-organize and reach some stable equilibrium point where communication load level and data loss is optimal. Perturbation in system usually does not change structure of the MAS but change equilibrium point that guarantees optimal performance.
