The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles. © 2020 The Authors. When mining of input data is focused on rule induction, knowledge, discovered in exploration of existing patterns, is stored in combinations of certain conditions on attributes included in rule premises, leading to specific decisions. Through their properties, such as lengths, supports, cardinalities of rule sets, inferred rules characterise relations detected among variables. The paper presents research dedicated to analysis of these dependencies, considered in the context of various discretisation methods applied to the input data from stylometric domain. For induction of decision rules from data, Classical Rough Set Approach was employed. Next, based on rule properties, several factors were proposed and evaluated, reflecting characteristics of available condition attributes. They allowed to observe how variables and rule sets changed depending on applied discretisation algorithms.

In the paper important aspects of the proper use of quality inspection in production process were presented. The paper deals with the problem of assembly line balance analysis taking into account occurrence of quality checkpoints. It is very important for producers, because the earlier the detection of a defect, the greater the possibility of reducing the costs of manufacturing a faulty product. In order to present the real assembly line balancing problem taking into account occurrence of checkpoints in strictly defined places, simplified process of USB flash drive production was analyzed. The assembly line balancing was performed and the indicators evaluating quality of the solutions were obtained. The calculations were made for different conditions regarding the type and location of quality inspections. Approaches like classical assembly line balancing without and with quality inspection, and fragmentary assembly line balancing with quality inspection were verified. All results and discussion are presented in the paper.

The use of deep-learned features has recently allowed for improving the performance of skin detection and segmentation. In particular, fully-convolutional U-Nets, proposed for segmenting medical images, occurred to be extremely effective here. However, the spatial context, which is rather narrow for U-Nets, may be more important for skin segmentation than for segmenting other image structures. We propose Skinny-a lightweight U-Net-based architecture that extends the range of multi-scale analysis. The results of our experiments indicate that Skinny outperforms the state-of-the-art skin segmentation techniques, rendering the F-score of 92.3% and 94.9% for the ECU and HGR datasets, respectively.

This study explores the neurological basis of emotions using a multi-method approach, analysing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data obtained from a 26-channel device. Author’s primary objective was to examine the brain’s response to tasks that provoke emotional, imagery and affective reactions through the observation of hemodynamic changes in data. By applying data processing methods and techniques, cerebral activations corresponding to different emotional states were shown. This research enriches comprehension of how emotion and imagery tasks are processed by the brain and offers insights into aspects of brain activity during emotionally charged engagements.

This paper deals with the problem of signals filtering using hybrid filters. Such solutions may prove to be especially beneficial in the context of biomedical signals filtering where the signals’ amplitudes are typically not very high and they can be easily affected by different kinds of disturbances. Having a number of different types of filters tuned for some specific purposes we will show how the best filter choice is affected by selecting one ML model over another.

The performance of Interline DC Power Flow controllers (IDC-PFCs) in Voltage Source Converters (VSC)-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, can be affected due to different issues. The current limitation of HVDC lines, the voltage limitation of HVDC buses, and DC voltage of the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor prevent effective and efficient operation of IDC-PFCs. In this paper, it is shown that this issue can be overcome by using a virtual capacitor in parallel with the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor. Also, an energy control-based scheme is proposed for the operation of IDC-PFCs in VSC-HVDC grid. The benefits of using the virtual capacitor are: widening the operational area of the IDC-PFCs for the determined duty cycle and injecting more voltage in series to the interconnected HVDC line to control the related HVDC line current. The proposed solution is successfully evaluated on a CIGRE three-terminal VSC-HVDC grid which is modeled by linearized space-state equations.

The quotient of two multivariate Gaussian densities can be written as an unnormalized Gaussian density, which has been applied in some recently developed multiple-model fixed-interval smoothing algorithms. However, this expression is invalid if instead of being positive definite, the covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density is indefinite (i.e., it has both positive and negative eigenvalues) or undefined (i.e., computing it requires inverting a singular matrix). This paper considers approximating the quotient of two Gaussian densities in this case using two different approaches to mitigate the caused numerical problems. The first approach directly replaces the indefinite covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density with a positive definite matrix nearest to it. The second approach computes the approximation through solving, using the natural gradient, an optimization problem with a Kullback-Leibler divergence-based cost function. This paper illustrates the application of the theoretical results by incorporating them into an existing smoothing method for jump Markov systems and utilizing the obtained smoothers to track a maneuvering target.

The paper presents a novel approach to investigating mistakes in machine learning model operations. The considered approach is the basis for BrightBox – a diagnostic technology that can be used for analyzing prediction models and identifying model- and data-related issues. The idea is to generate surrogate rough set-based models from data that approximate decisions made by monitored black-box models. Such approximators are used to compute neighborhoods of instances that undergo the diagnostic process — the neighborhoods consist of historical instances that were processed in a similar way by rough set-based models. The diagnostic process is then based on the analysis of mistakes registered in such neighborhoods. The experiments performed on real-world data sets confirm that such analysis can provide us with efficient and valid insights about the reasons for the poor performance of machine learning models. © 2023

The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so.
